...and it's still not a state record.

... not withstanding:

1. It appears the wind was behind him

2. They use a tee in high school

3. Reno is about 4500' in elevation, and kicks tend to travel further in thinner air.

However, it STILL was an incredible kick

Record kicks are all either at altitude, or with an aid (such as a special shoe or tee). I would guess the wind is almost alwayd with them on longer than 45 yard kicks.

That aside, A guy who can kick that far under good conditions should be able to still kick well in normal conditions.

I am curious why people are so quick to point out it was not an NFL tee-free sealevel kick...It is not as though high schoolers at altitude are banging 60+ yarders regularly.

The "yeah, but ... so it's not all that good" thing in our culture mixed with the "everyone gets an award" thing go together exceptionally well.

Cant have one person being better than anyone else.

and this one was longer than the NFL record which I think was in Denver, another several hundred feet higher than Reno

Well - it wasn't even a high school record. I understand that the Nevada HS record kick is even longer.

As for the other kicks, it was noted that Dempsey had a special shoe and Elam was a Mile High Stadium. Although Janikowski was in Denver, he did have some degree of difficulty because of a cross-wind and the fact that it was raining.

I've heard that Janikowski has consistently made longer field goals in practice. He could probably do it once in a while from 70 yards.
