Hank Williams Jr, in a statement explaining why he quit MNF after they fired him:
Quote:

After reading hundreds of e-mails, I have made MY decision. By pulling my opening Oct 3rd, You (ESPN) stepped on the Toes of The First Amendment Freedom of Speech, so therefore Me, My Song, and All My Rowdy Friends are OUT OF HERE. It's been a great run.

I'm not sure what's next for Williams, but he's probably not going to be teaching any constitutional law courses.

I do agree with him on one thing -- we're ready for some football!

Yep - there were quite a few people on this board (and millions no doubt all over the internet) that referenced the first amendment when discussing this issue. Everyone should feel free to call their boss an idiot - just don't bring up the first amendment when you get fired for it.

I think he should spend some time with Ted Nugent, they'd get along famously...

Maybe he should sign up for a few history classes instead. He certainly isn't learning much from the Fox Entertainment echo chamber. Besides, isn't it about time that ESPN rolled something new out. I wouldn't waste my time to tune in specifically to watch that intro into MNF, but I'll often make it a point to check out Faith Hill opening SNF :p

Or music classes.

Regardless of how stupid he was in saying what he said, I'll be forever grateful that he did, because we no longer have to hear that piece of crap song again. Now if only Faith Hill would get caught on tape kicking a puppy or something....

On the other hand, anyone that doesn't know the distinction between a metonym and a metaphor is probably not going to be teaching any rhetoric classes. Might be better off protesting in New York with the Wallbaggers.

Williams has the right to be an idiot and ESPN has the right to fire him.
It probably wasn't a good idea to call the President and the Vice President 'the enemies'. I don't care where you lean in the political spectrum. Referring to our leader -- whether you like him or not -- as the enemy is beyond stupid.
That being said, I completely agree with you 860. This is a perfect opportunity for ESPN to replace an act that sucks with one that sucks less.

I say good riddance.

So I guess HWJr will be retracting that apology he issued after he said it then?

...to secede from the Union along with TexASS. Just think what a wonderful country we would have without the South and TexASS.

More and more often these days, I wish the White Trash had won the Civil War so we wouldn't have to think of them as "our fellow Americans."

Memo to right-wingers:

It is more than a little bit hypocritical to advocate for the free market, and then turn around and complain when a PRIVATE company makes a BUSINESS decision to fire you because of something you PERSONALLY CHOSE to say to a major media outlet.

Now I don't know if HWJ is a major "free market" advocate, but I'd set 80/20 odds that he is. And even if he isn't, it's a laughably bad application of the First Amendment to claim it was violated here.
