Can we stop already with the William Hung stuff, he's had his 15min of fame and is already past his sell by date. He'll probably regret not having stayed in school and gotten the world's best Civil Engineering BS.

Most famous alumni from around the Pac-10:

UCLA: Jim Morrison, Arthur Ashe, Francis Ford Coppola
Furd: Sigourney Weaver, John McEnroe, John Steinbeck
USC: John Wayne, George Lucas, OJ Simpson
UW: Bruce Lee, Charles Eames, Kenny G (teehee)
WSU: Keith Jackson, Gary Larson, Timothy Leary
OSU: Linus Pauling
Oregon: uncle Phil, Steve Prefontaine
ASU: Pat Tillman, Lynda Carter
UofA: Barry Goldwater, Don Knotts
CU: Robert Redford, Judy Collins
UU: Karl Rove, Ted Bundy (uhm, buyer's remorse?)

For pop cluture freaks its probably Adam Duritz...

He didn't graduate (and his music sucks) so he does not belong on this list. Otherwise, Jason Kidd would top this list.

The mention of Bhutto was genius. But for 40 years the most famous American in Europe and most of the world was the one who wrote "Separate but equal is inherently, unequal." Ending State sanctioned segregation, and changing the course of America. But then again, I am not unbiased.

Sully is not an alum.

You don't need to receive a degree from a school to be considered an alumnus.

And I am glad that there are many people who disagree with you about Adam Duritz' music.

If it's the football player I graduated with in 1970, both. In some of his op-ed writings, I sense that we share a loss of "the California Identity". While we were growing up there were major companies headquartered in California that shaped our lives and economy. Almost all of these companies are now owned and managed out of state and frequently don't give a tinker's damn about the impact of their corporation on California. B of A (now North Carolina), Southern Pacific (once the state's largest land owner, now Omaha, Neb), PG&E, SoCal Edison (remember Enron in Charge?).

Cal welcomes foreign and out-of-state students at an ever accelerating rate. Texas still maintains a "Texas for Texans" attitude. It might not be bad thing if the UC system's pragmatic goal was to educate Californians. Maybe we had one too many governor's who didn't see the advantage of California kids going to the Public University of the State of California.

Interesting that none of the Fraternity types didn't mention Frank Norris or the even more prolific writer-party animal, Jack London.

My short list of famous Cal alumni:

Dominant Politician -Earl Warren
Novelist - Jack London
Entertainment - Gregory Peck
Athlete - Natalie Coughlin/Matt Biondi
Team Athlete - Joe Kapp (at least he beat USC and went to the Rose Bowl and during his long career he was known nationally)/ Jackie Jensen

I am surprised that no one has mentioned Joanie. She went to Boalt. They even had a seat reserved for her the year she graduated.

This group is way too young.

Doolittle? Really? I didn't know. Since he was a national hero during WWII, he'd probably qualify as the most famous alumnus from the first half of the 20th century.

In 1962 Doolittle was honored at halftime of a Cal football game in Memorial Stadium.
