Earlier thread said porta-potties; can this possibly be true?? How tough/expensive could it possibly be to build a "shed" (inside the gates) with many, many rows of heads!! If they intentionally failed to build toilets, I got to wonder about everything else they are doing. Seems sort of basic to design. GO BEARS!!

What exactly did you hear that would lead you to believe this?

There is zero chance they didn't design in toilets in the west half.

There still will be porta potties on the east since that's not being rebuilt right now.

It's possible that the interior finishing on some of the west side will not be complete by opening day in 2012 - that might include bathroom fixtures, so there might be porta potties on the west side for a couple of games?

Yeah I think the comment about porta porgies was referring to the East side..

If there are only porta-potties for the women, my wife won't go to the games. And I would bet that she isn't alone. Going to the restroom is a complex ritual and social event for most women. :p

Doesn't seem like it would be up to code for a venue attracting 50-60 K.

Is there a reason for east side not being redone too? Are they planning to redo it at sometime? Doesn't make much sense to me that they would only renovate half the stadium.

The east side is built into the hill, it is solid.
It is the west side that was a disaster waiting to happen.
It is interesting to remember the earthquake evacuation plan posted somewhere here a while ago. Everybody get to the east side of the field and file up and out.

I sit in a donor section on the east side of Memorial. I wonder if the sunny siders will get some sort of a price break to sit in a completely unimproved part of the stadium while those on the shady side enjoy all the improvements. This year's approach to ticket prices doesn't give me much confidence.

Money. After spending around $150 million on the SAHPC and about $325 million on the stadium, the school was feeling stretched a little thin.

Edit: and I would take anything 76bearsfly posts with a huge grain of salt. He had a ticket to the Band's historic "Last Waltz" concert and didn't go. (That blows my mind, dude!)

My GF is the same way. She'd rather hold it than use a portapotty. I hope the athletic dept thinks about ALL their fans and not just guys who can just go in the everpresent trough, which has its own set of unspoken rules that would make for a great anthropological study.

Just curious...where do people expect the bathrooms to go? The east side of the stadium is built into the hill. To build them "into" the hill they'd have to excavate into the hill, which could very likely reduce the strength of the one naturally strong part of the structure. Pretty hard to justify that when the justification for the rebuild to begin with is earthquake safety.

There just isn't enough room between the back of the stadium and the road behind it. They could potentially try and build structures right next to the road, but plumbing and electricity for bathrooms is an expensive endeavor which would again require excavating into the hill. Wouldn't surprise me if it was a 50-100 million dollar endeavor to do properly (last thing you want is half assed bathrooms that backup every gameday...I'd rather have porta potties).

Also, keep in mind, there is a maximum amount of money you an spend on a building that is on a fault line in terms of retrofits. That was one of the problems they had to face building the athletic center. They had to prove that it was an independent structure from the stadium and that they shared no structural foundation with each other in order to ok the expenditure on it. I'm not sure that they could have spent more money to do any upgrades more than they have if they wanted to.

Don't stereotype "most women". What a wuss. She must miss a lot of sports and outdoor events. Complex ritual? Social event? In my "social" circle, the women can't get back to the game or event soon enough.

My understanding is they will be putting in permanent bathrooms on the East Side as "Phase 3" between the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Next year it will still be portapotties though.

Are porta-potties safe in an earthquake?

You'd think improving the permanent facilities would be a priority. Right now kids are whizzing in the woods...and so are some of the alums.

BTW--seating capacity in the new CMS will be ~ 60K...is that correct?

What is the architectural formula for optimum hygienic required service capacity on the east side...20K? Just how many porta units are required for optimum service?

What is the rental rate for each unit...delivered, fully maintained, user cleansing and removal from site post service? Damage?

Proximity to food services? Personal hygiene?

What about risk of a cholera outbreak....or mass food poisoning or other infectious disease?

The porta's are fine on a construction site, but not for this type of facility.

You do recall that there used to be restrooms on the east side? A large men's room was removed from service and converted to the Rugby Field House. A large women's restroom was located at the Strawberry Road Tee. There's plenty of room along the rim on the east side of the road - just lop off 15 feet of the practice field, returning to the stadium facility what was taken in previous years.)

Mama Bear - If more women were like you, CMS would probably be sold out every game. Women who love Cal sports that much would probably gladly use a ditch or bush so that they wouldn't miss any of the action. Unfortunately many of us have spouses or girlfriends, who went to other schools, are not crazy about sitting through 3 hour games, and go to games mainly to please us. Installing only porta-potties can only make it less likely that a lot of not-sports-crazy women will look forward to going to the games. And if the wife or girlfriend wants to do something else on a Saturday afternoon, it makes it that much harder for us guys to make it over to CMS. Are we being "wusses"?

Well, we can't have restrooms outside the stadium because that would interfere with the sacred in-and-out rule, which makes no sense to me.

Oregon allows folks to leave the stadium and return (after a pop or two, I suspect). Why can't we? The security argument is bogus. There is nothing to stop a person from being "re-frisked" when coming back in.

An outside "super potty" could save a lot of money. Maybe we could tear down some dwellings on lower Panoramic to squeeze it in. :p

Tenplay--you guys are not wusses--it's those "girlie girls". I do agree that it is painful for these spouse who tag along trying to be good sports.

But seriously, these girls are going to have less than a full life if they don't "adjust". For instance, what happens when you travel to Italy, and there you are, in a small family vineyard for a wine tasting. And sure enough, she has to p--. Likely a latrine with a hole in the ground! Most small towns have a similar "hole", even at the rail stations All the festivals, art shows, music venues, etc.

Best get these spouses upgraded to porta-pottie ready as soon as possible. Life is short.

Take squeamish wife or g/f to Kip's before game. Porta-potty will look like powder room at St.Francis.

Good grief...is that some kind of a Farm joke?

Back in my day (you know...before we were ancient and forbidden to comment on new helmet styles) there were rest room facilities on the east side of rim road with tile roofs and real running water from artesian wells and water closets with stalls for privacy and pee troughs. It was a place where you actually wash your hands instead of wiping them on your pants. There were mirrors where you could primp your hair and powder your nose or comb your crewcut after using the facilities and heading to the snack bar for foodhandling. And we loved them.

That has changed and now we just buck it and don't tell the other folks where you have just been before you bring the children a hot dog and popcorn.

Just the east side. The porta potties side on what is a road the rest of the week.

Plus, I'd like to see us eventually build a large structure on the east or south-eastside--maybe craftsman inspired with lower level toilets and food vending, mid-level luxury boxes with polarized glass and a rooftop beer garden with a bridge to Tightwad Hill (technically "outside" the stadium). Have the whole thing designed to reflect noise back into the stadium. If it blocks some Panoramic Hill bay views, hey, at least it blocks their view of the "oppressive" stadium.

There seems to be a directional issue. Toilet's N / S / W....and bucks in the E in 2012. BYO sanitizer and wipes...unless you "don't do that"...but be discrete.

We are in an era of user-friendly infectious disease (aka fun loving litigation) and we are a multi-cultural University community.

Get a clue and make an effort. It's not all about $sports.

Relax everyone, as a part of Cal's green policy, one of Tedford's assistant coaches demonstrates that there will be plenty of places to pee on the east hillside of the stadium....and there won't be any lines!
