story, looking at Tedford's handling of Maynard and Bridgford so far and going forward on Front Page: http://www.bearinsider.com/news/story.php?article=1572

MB, thank you. I hope we have a chance to see Allan tomorrow, or later today...

Great capture of the complexities and perspectives of this issue. I do hope Zach shows real improvements rather than delaying what seems like the inevitable.

Quote:

What many fear is that Maynard might play just well enough against two weaker opponents to keep Bridgford off the field, preventing his growth in the next two games against sub-.500 opponents but quite possibly regress against tougher competition as he has so far this year when Cal finishes up with road contests against North and South division leaders Stanford and ASU -potentially leaving Bridgford with a trial by fire situation he's ill-prepared to face if thrown to the lions without adequate game-time prep.

QFT. My fears exactly.

Ditto.....If that happens, I'd be super pi$$ed if I were AB or his parents...in fact, I'd be pi$$ed as a fan.....

Well written. Thank you.

The implication here is that numerous times the receivers are not running the called routes/ or are not breaking off their routes to come back and help the QB under duress. It does seem like everybody is covered down field an inordinate number of times.

Maybe if they feel like Maynard would actually throw the ball to them (besides KA) they would be a lil more enthusiastic.

Fine. I get it.

The real issue is how can we get rid of Tedford. The Tedford era is done. Ever since Rodgers left, we have had this conundrum.

First Ayoob, Longshore, Reed, Levy
Then Longshore, Riley, Ayoob
Then Riley, Longshore, Mansion
Then Riley, Mansion
Now Maynard, Bridgforth, Mansion, Hinder, Boehm

Get lost Tedford. Getting rid of him is our conundrum

the product on the field is about the same. Perhaps, someone else has to change.

that Bill Walsh was in a similar situation when he took over the 49ers. Steve Deberg was the QB and Montana was an unsung 4th round pick. Steve Deberg was a decent NFL QB. But as Walsh later said, "He'll play just good enough to get you beat". Walsh eventually went with a young, unproven Montana and the rest is history. And believe me, it wasn't the slam dunk you think. Montana had not done much at Notre Dame and Deberg was decent. Walsh was on the verge of quitting the 49ers because his first two years had not gone well. But he had the guts to make the correct decision and go with the guy who was a bit more accurate with the ball. I doubt Bridgford is the next Montana. I know he doesn't have the coaching Montana had. But I do know he deserves and the team deserves to see what he can do.

I remember those days but I am in semi disagreement with you about Montana. While at ND he showed that he could lead a comeback. I remember the one against Texas at the Cotton Bowl. I remember thinking to myself "This kid may not have the strongest arm but goddamn it he makes the plays and he wills his team to victory."

he was a 3rd round pick. Even Walsh passed on him twice before taking him.

Correction, Walsh only passed on Montana once. The 49ers didn't have a first round pick in 1979. The rest of the league passed on Montana twice. Boy, what a mess the 49ers were in. They were one of the worst teams but didn't have a first round pick. Walsh was a genius.

Further 1979 49er draft info (because it is astonishing): it was horrible!!! Missing picks in various rounds and the only two players they got that actually played were Montana in the 3rd and Dwight Clark in the 10th. What a horrible yet great draft. Their first pick that year (in the 2nd round) was huge UCLA bust James Owens. The rest of the guys may not have ever played in the NFL.

My hope for today's game would be an excellent first half by Maynard and a four touchdown lead at halftime by our Bears. Then, we could watch Bridgeford play the entire second half and get some much needed game experience.

That's pretty strong language for a coach who's been here 10 years....and given us his best. I agree that his time has come, and gone, but we need to show respect!

Montana was like the coyote in native american lure....very smart, and very wiley.

There are 4-5 good Qb's in the Cal program right now.

There is not 1 QB in the program who can run the Cal Offense!

If ZM does well enough to give Cal the lead, even a huge lead, there is no chance that AB will come in. We know that much of Tedford, unfortunately.
