That's not even the point and quite frankly such a silly retort I'm wondering if you are just trying to be annoying. Don't you think many of these guys get incentives of many types? If you believe Tedford's number doesn't take into account all of his incentives, whatever those incentives may be, then assuming that CK's number takes into account all of his incentives is pretty foolish. For all I know CK gets a bonus if none of his players get caught driving over 119mph. In any case, I'm quite sure that other Pac-12 coaches get incentives that Tedford doesn't get, as he gets incentives they don't get.

Chip might be the only guy on that list no grossly overpaid.

600K to a guy who has won like 10 games total?

Holmoe would have been worth that salary if he somehow magically got the SAHPC and stadium rebuilt. Of course the second those were done deals he would have been worth negative $2.3M going forward (if not less).

Not to worry, CB1, some people are happier living in their fantasy world than joining us in reality. It will take at least another 5,000.........

The amount of money he has brought in the form of football revenue over what was our pre-Tedford average dwarfs his salary differential. Whether it continues to be a good ROI is another question.

I didn't say they have Tedford style incentives. All coaches have incentives. The numbers on that list either 1. include all such incentives (making them good numbers) or 2. do not include all such incentives (making them useless and stupid numbers) or 3 include SOME of those numbers but not ALL of those numbers (making them REALLY useless and REALLY stupid numbers).

Now you DO think that Kelly gets "rewards for pac-12 championships and national championships". So if that is the case, your point that Tedford makes as much as Kelly taking into account Tedford's incentives then is an incorrect assumption because your quip does not take into account that likely either the number does include Tedford's incentive, or it doesn't include Kelly's incentives. (my guess is that it includes Kelly's incentives because that is an insanely high base salary to have signed on to for a OC you promoted from within in a low cost of living area like Eugene.)

I'm not arguing who is more worth their salary, I'm saying that your assumption that Tedford makes as much as Kelly because you think you know he has an added incentive (which by the way, you are wrong about) is ridiculous when not taking into account what you don't know about Kelly's compensation.

That is as much a cause of our success as Tedford himself. In 1992, Tedford would have been sent packing after 2004 for asking for compensation.

What was the major policy change in 2002? They didn't pay Tedford a huge salary to attract him or spend a lot of money on the program. The only major policy change that I can see that predated the football success was the one that had already occurred - after the Snyder debacle and the subsequent crash in our football revenue, SOME people (enough) realized that IF you actually get a successful coach in a revenue sport, you pay to keep him. That changed happened when they paid to keep Braun back when that seemed like a good idea. Beyond that, what was Cal doing in 2002 that you think made coaching easier than it was in 2000?

Leaving out whether JT should stay, I'm glad to see Cal is at least competitive with other Pac 12 schools. Kiffin is probably the highest paid (and talk about not getting a good return on investment), but Cal's right there with Oregon and UW, which is good to see.

As Phantomfan pointed out, until very recently the admin didn't give a crap about football and as a result we usually had lousy coaches.

FWIW there's a lot of conversation at UCLA about Sark, which means there will be at least one other Pac 12 team at or above JT's salary range. I know we think it's "sooooo much money," but the fact is we're barely in the mid range for coach's salaries for "schools that give a rip about winning football." And we're nowhere near the top.

This was endemic. Starting in 2001 with the hire of Gladstone, Cal finally had an AD who thought Cal football success was a good thing and should be encouraged and paid for. Tedford being hired as an unproven coach was NOT a sign of that shift but Gladstone was CLEARY different in his approach to success in athletics.

That was shown in 2004 we SPECIFICALLY hired an AD to
1. Retain a successful coach (something we had NEVER even TRIED to do before Gladstone or Tedford),
2. Build a complex on campus that is one of (if not the) most expensive buildings for ATHLETICS… after years of not even bothering to have working toilets.
It should also be mentioned that the wheel at Cal was given to a guy who actually respected athletic success (and put his effort where his mouth was) way way more than the beloved Tien.

Anyone who does not readily see the shift towards athletic success being a good thing during the Gladstone years is either an idiot, new or a liar. Amazing how Gladstone is overlooked on this board. It is a flat out shame. Kasser (and the idiot before him)was as bad for Cal as Holmoe was... and no one remembers... shift. It was talked about a lot back in 2002... Only now to people conveniently forget and give all credit to Tedford... Does Tedford deserve credit? Yes, but all of it? Not even close. The shift towards respectable athletics was Gladstone...BY FAR.

I know we think it's "sooooo much money," but the fact is we're barely in the mid range for coach's salaries for "schools that give a rip about winning football." And we're nowhere near the top.

For comparison's sake, here are the SEC coaches salaries:

SEC WEST
Bobby Petrino - Arkansas: $3.638 million ($650,000 max bonus)
Gene Chizik - Auburn: $3.5 million ($1.2 million max bonus)
Nick Saban - Alabama: $4.833 million ($700,000 max bonus)
Houston Nutt - Ole Miss: $2.772 million ($715,000 max bonus)
Les Miles - LSU: $3.856 million ($700,000 max bonus)
Dan Mullen - Mississippi State: $2.5 million ($650,000 max bonus)

SEC EAST
Mark Richt - Georgia: $2.94 million ($525,000 max bonus)
Derek Dooley - Tennessee: $2.331 million ($475,000 max bonus)
James Franklin - Vanderbilt: N/A (private school)
Will Muschamp - Florida: $3.221 million ($450,000 max bonus)
Joker Phillips - Kentucky: $1.702 million ($1.105 million max bonus)
Steve Spurrier - South Carolina: $2.828 million ($1 million max bonus)

Other than Lane Kiffin (who, if in fact he makes $4 million/year is just absurdly overpaid) the SEC pays considerably more.

I also think it's interesting that the more "established" coaches with programs that have played in BCS bowls recently have much lower max bonuses than those that have not (but higher base salaries, obviously).

If it was very clear you can tell me what it was. You can't because it was a bullshyte shift. The shift was that the Chancellor said "I want to win in football". What was actually done? No more money. No upgrade in facilities. What happened? And exactly how did that make us 7-5 in 2002? or 8-6 in 2003? or 10-2 in 2004? And what was it that Cal did outside of hiring Tedford that lead to the attendance figures going up. That tremendous shift was about as good as Tien's cheering the team on in public and then walking into his office and slashing the athletic budget.

C'mon man. Maybe its time for Tedford to go, but he did what he did here. You want to say he sucks now, fine, but he achieved something pretty good here those first couple years. I think the time for any loyalty that was bought by that performance influencing the decision to keep him is long since passed, but you can't erase what Tedford acheived then.

It was a very clear shift.

Do other people concur that there was a clear shift? I know there was the firing of Holmoe. Some people wanted Marvin Lewis, some wanted Bruce Snyder, and then Tedford. I think Tedford was #2 or 3 on that list. Marvin Lewis was perceived as using Cal as a stepping stone to the NFL, so we went with the young blood. Tedford went to check out Garrett Cross, found AR and the rest is history.

Kelly would have been fired at Cal. Not sure the point of that either.

Don't get in Phantomfan's way of making up bullsh-t and speaking authoritatively about things he knows nothing about!

Before 2001, Cal athletic directors encouraged good coaches to find work somewhere else (Snyder) while bad coaches were actually asked to stay (Holmoe in 2000).

It was talked about a lot back in 2002... Only now to people conveniently forget and give all credit to Tedford... Does Tedford deserve credit? Yes, but all of it? Not even close. The shift towards respectable athletics was Gladstone...BY FAR.

Kelly makes Mike White look like a boy scout and Cal fired him at a time when no one in the college football world, including Cal and Stanford, was clean.

No way the academic side of the university would put up with the public embarassment Kelly has brought on Oregon. There are still a lot of people there that don't give a flying fig about football. Frankly, football may be in a shyteload of trouble with Barsky around if Kelly's antics had gone on here.

OaktownBear;627585 said:

Maybe you were not arround for Kasser? I would believe that you were, but you were too stupid to notice.

The shift was the mentality towards sports at Cal. It started with Kasser Resigning. Kasser was terrible for Cal sports, as was Berdahl, as was Driscoll. At some point Gladstone stepped foward from one of the few highly respectable teams, and by being who he was got Berdahl to buy into athletics. It was not instantainous, but it is entirely undenyable (to anyone who remembers the AD's before him, or how Berdahl looked at athletics before Gladstone).

I am SHOCKED that Cal fans are reluctant to give credit to the shift in mentality that Gladstone brought... That dude is a flat out Cal hero. If not for his doing, Tedford would have been GONE in 2004.

Lets not forget, Cal has had good coaches as successful as Tedford (even in the 10 years before Tedford) and the system in place did not respect them enough to retain them. Without Gladstone, there would be no stadium project (he facilitated the search and hire of an AD to build it), Tedford would be a "former Cal coach" (he facilitated the hire of an AD to retain him) and we would be likely talking about "how the hell can we lose so much if we break the rules so often!?" (before Gladstone Cal was a dirty but somehow losing program).

seriously... No one remembers this? I find that hard to believe, given I can find articles from that time frame that said the same thing. For having such a short term memory, Cal fans sure are scared to return to those days...

burritos;627593 said:

Do other people concur that there was a clear shift? I know there was the firing of Holmoe. Some people wanted Marvin Lewis, some wanted Bruce Snyder, and then Tedford. I think Tedford was #2 or 3 on that list. Marvin Lewis was perceived as using Cal as a stepping stone to the NFL, so we went with the young blood. Tedford went to check out Garrett Cross, found AR and the rest is history.

Actually, people were talking about the shift before Tedford was hired... It had nothing to do with the product on the field or who they ultimately hired...

It had to do with HOW we put the product on the field and that the outcome was critical (new to Cal) and that the way we did it was critical (new to Cal).

It was also a shift to a support of Cal athletics both in oversight and accountability from the top.

This caused a shift to
1. Fielding clean teams
2. Fielding Student Athletes
3. Fielding competetive teams
4. Supporting the people who bring those things to Cal

THAT led to the idea that we needed a proven top level BTDT AD that could build support for a new stadium, and retain a specific coach.

Make no mistake. Without Gladstone, Tedford may have been hired, but he would have been gone within a couple years (likely after 2004).

There is success, and there is fostering an eviornment that encourages and facilitates that success AND doing it "right"... Cal NEVER had that before 2001-2002. At least not in the ~40 years before 2002.
