Hi All - I am taking my son (17 year old) to the Holiday Bowl to cheer on the Bears! Having never been to a bowl game let alone the Holiday Bowl, I was just wondering if you all had any ideas on how to help make this trip a memorable one for us. Any suggestions ..... tailgate, luncheon, party, band performance, player and coach meet and greet, etc.????? THANKS AND GO BEARS!!!!

Get out of the stadium and find a decent place too eat as quickly as possible. Don't bother with the cutesy trolley system -- it will take forever to get to and from the stadium. After standing in line for the trolley for about 45 minutes after the 2004 Holiday Bowl, we ended up walking over to a shopping center to catch a cab back to our hotel (near the Gaslight District), only to discover that the area restaurants either (i) were no longer serving dinner or (ii) were short-staffed because they didn't expect a big crowd on a weeknight (as if someone had just decided the day before to have a bowl game in town).

I work next to the Parade path and reviewing stands, I've seen the last 12 and will be retiring three days after this years parade. It reminds me more of the county fair parades when I was a kid than of the Rose Bowl parade. I always was able to watch curbside for free, be aware of the parade route is along the watefront and it can be cold in the morning (for SD). I attended both previous Holiday Bowl luncheons and have positive memories. In 2004 Steve Levy and O'Callaghan were the Cal team members at our table. Both times the players were extremely polite and approachable. The food was decent, the atmosphere was better. A nice prelude to partying in the gaslight later.

The luncheon is pricey ($50/ea) but you get both marching bands inside a banquet hall, so that's pretty cool. You get to sit at a table with 2 Cal players (I suspect that there is a pecking order that determines whether your table has starting skill position players or redshirt linemen). In 2004 for some reason we got seated at a Texas Tech table, which was probably more fun from a cultural exchange perspective than sitting with other Cal fans. And there's a battle of the bands before or after, not sure which.

I am not a fan of these luncheons however if I was taking my son to the game I would definitely consider this option for his benefit.

However, if you take the bus tour you can see a lot in a relatively short time. Then you can hit the exhibits the tour missed or passed by too quickly, saving yourself hours. The tram across the zoo is a must do as you will not only get to see the exhibits from above but you will also see one of the most awesome views of San Diego. Do not miss the San Diego Zoo!!!

I recommend: 1) Don't take the trolly. You'll never get out of there after the game. Rent a car if you can. 2) Stay at the team Hotel. Last time I think it was the Manchester Grand Hyatt. Most Bowl events take place right there. 3) Try out the luncheon the day before. Enjoy a meal with a couple of Cal players. 4) Check out the evening event (eve of the game) in the Hotel ballroom. 5) The day of the game there is usually a large tailgate event in a fenced off area of the parking lot. 6) Check with the Cal Alumni Assoc. for additional events. 7) The big events and most of the celebration is done the day before and day of the game. The next day everyone is heading out of town. I'd skip the SD Zoo until the day after the game if you still have time. 8) I'd be wary of buying tickets from the ATO. In 2004 my tickets from the ATO were in the upper level and the corner of the stadium.

Rent a car if you can..<hr></blockquote> I've never taken the trolley myself, but it has been stated many times here that the trick to easy access when leaving the stadium is to go one stop in the wrong direction, then turn around and come back.

In 2004 my tickets from the ATO were in the upper level and the corner of the stadium.<hr></blockquote> I agree with most of this having attended the 2 most recent Holiday Bowls and the Poinsetta Bowl..We've just about tried everything - staying in the team hotel, staying close to the Gaslamp, and most recently, a hotel close to Qualcomm (best idea for a returnee, but maybe not for a first-timer). Team Hotel is cool, although don't count on too much accessibility to the players and/or their parents. There are a few times when you can catch them downstairs, but it is after the game that you can more than likely catch the Bear families, and that is VERY nice! Great photos, etc. They have had the night-before rally at the team hotel lately, and then there is gear to buy there, etc. The best part is that it is very much a Cal takeover..something unique. How many times can you say, "Go Bears!"?? The Gaslamp is for adults - restaurants, shops and bars expensive and certainly SF worthy..If you have kids? Not that exciting for our three and we opted for time spent on the S.D. watefront where there are some nautical displays, walking, the small port, boats, ships or the hotel pool, etc. The Alumni Tailgate is expensive and recently not worth it in terms of quality of food and time spent in long lines..The Cal band and cheerleaders/Oski make it nice, and it is usually well attended if not a bit pricey. Tailgating is good however on your own - LOTS of Cal cars/vans/tents/RVs..so just join in! Renting a car doesn't seem like that great of an idea - but perhaps someone else can comment on that..Getting in and out of Qualcomm is limiting..not well planned. I can't comment on the Trolley, although some of had success taking the Trolley east one station after the game, and then catching the Trolley going back west to avoid lines? The Holiday Bowl website is full of other good stuff.. and yes, the ATO tickets last time where not well placed. I am looking at other sources now for our tribe..Find our Cal Tent and join our tailgate!

Going on 25 years here in LoCal ;-) A) I agree about staying at team hotel downtown. B) Suggest taking trolley TO the game but then, after it ends, walk North to main exit and then WEST (that is a left hand turn) to the Fenton Marketplace center with Huge IKEA. You can grab a beer at numerous eateries and hail/call for a cab. Beats the Trolley hands down which will be a "zoo" come after the game. C) If you have some strange compelling reason to see big balloons retired from Macy's parade go to the parade. Otherwise you can skip and wait till that blessed day that the California Marching Band comes walking down Pasadena some bright New Years morning ;-) D) Gaslamp even underage will be fun. Lots of nice places to eat and people watch. Some with live music. E) Suggest Midway Aircraft Carrier for the 17 year old. Unless he is a complete Berkeley pacifist he will find it a cool and once in life time tour. Plus Fight simulators rock ;-) F) Zoo is the Zoo. Worth seeing. _FAIRLY_ cheap cab ride from downtown or, if you are brave, you can hike from DT to ZOO it but keep in mind that it isn't flat so you will get your weeks worth of exercise that way. F2) Balboa Park is special. At least 2-3 hours for the main Prado. G) How the Grinch Stole XMAS will still be playing at the Globe. Fun San Diego holiday tradition. Plus, if you like Musicals, great revival of Jesus Christ Superstar up here in La Jolla. H) Been chilly and expect it to still be in January so beach is "out" except for strolls. That said, our sand is much better than Nocal's. I) I was under impressed by the tailgate BUT I do like the band. You can, however, hear them from other places in parking lot where many a tail gate will be going on. J) Old Del Hotel is worth seeing if you have a car - especially at the Holidays. Plus Coronado is just so nice....

Get to the stadium early. They close off a significant portion of the parking lot so they can do a halftime fireworks show over it, and traffic/parking control is nonexistent (at least it was in 2004). Can you tell I'm still angry?

One of the coolest things I did at two different Cal bowl games was to go to the stadium the day BEFORE the game. Without actually knowing when the teams would be there (though I'm sure one could find out), we happened to be there when the team was going through their day-before walk-through. Security was amazingly non-existant and we just walked around on the field (w/o players), the sidelines and in the stands (with the players). We were all wearing Cal gear, so I guess any team or bowl officials just assumed we were with the team, or relatives of the players, or something. Basically, it felt like we were having our very own special moment, as opposed to all the other packaged bowl-week events. Cannot guarantee, of course, if this will be possible at the HB, but it might be worth a try.

The putting greens are free and typically in excellent shape. Twilight golf at Torrey or try out Balboa with its new improved sprinklers making good grass. Gambling/show/dinner at Viejas or Barona Casinos. Good Mexican food everywhere you look. GO BEARS!!

Anthony's Fish Grotto if you like seafood. Very casual, near the Holiday Inn on the waterfront. In 2004, I took my two boys. Caught the trolley at the Gas Lamp District and got on no problem. By the time we got to the stadium it was packed and people were left waiting for the next one. Caught a bus (there were a bunch of free ones) in back of the stadium and headed back to the Gas Lamp. Of course we got out of there just as the game ended so we didn't have to wait in any lines.

The USS Midway is a real aircraft carrier. You get to walk around all over the ship, and there are several museum type displays along with live lectures on the top deck. When I was there last year, there was an old pilot on the top deck who shared stories about landing his plane on the carrier in bad weather. Then we got to climb aboard a plane just like the one he flew. It's a great attraction - no lines and reasonably priced. Warning, however - if you're really tall like I am, you'll bump your head several times, as the hallways inside the ship are for men 6 feet and under. Legoland is great if you have little kids - toddlers up to about age 8 or so. Kids above that age will probably be bored.

This seemed like the best spot to throw in a few words: 1. Beer. No one has mentioned beer. I favor Blind Lady (not quite 30th). The entire area is a short cab ride from downtown, though you should note that Hamiltons (great) and Toronado (yes, from SF) are not walkable. 2. Along those lines, if you are up in the Escondido area visiting the Wild Animal Park, stop by Stone Brewery. Nice place, great restaurant, not "cheap" pub food, meals run $15 to $20 at lunch, $20 and up for dinner. Gaslamp - of course. I have kids, don't go out much these days, but I'm sure there's something for everyone there. 4. Little Italy - the area is really up and coming with some great eats. There was always decent Italian food, but great variety now that more people live there, 5 min north of downtown, basically east of the airport. Bencotto is a lively new place I really like. Craft and Commerce gets raves, haven't been there. Yelp it to get other ideas (Bottlecraft also is supposed to be great). 5. Fish tacos? South Beach in Ocean Beach on Newport Avenue, grilled fish tacos of all varieties (Rubios sucks, but you are free to disagree). Ocean Beach is like Berkeley on the beach. This area combines well with a trip to the Cabrillo Monument in Point Loma, which in my opinion is a quick visit (for historical purposes), but has the best views of the city. If the tides are super low, you can check out the tidepools (ask the ranger, $5 to enter or something like that). 6. Other places I might take tourists: downtown La Jolla, La Jolla Shores for a stroll on the beach in December, or downtown Del Mar for something similar. The younger crowd might enjoy Pacific Beach more, tons of bars, but with school out, not sure how busy December is down there. Julian is a nice mountain town about an hour east of San Diego. Gamblers can swing by at least 2 or 3 casinos on the way out there. As for the HB, as I've posted in past years, don't complain about the traffic on Friars if you plan to arrive 1 hour before the game. 4 hours before the game is when you need to drive in, if you plan to do that. Then, you can tailgate or do the Cal tailgate. I agree with other posters, the trolley is a pain on egress from the game. It's just a bottleneck, but I've never had it take more than 30 minutes, personally. Pick your poison, it's a pain to drive out of the parking lot with 15,000 cars, as well. 2 cents over...have fun in SD.

Talked to the ATO and they indicated that their tickets are ALL in the upper deck. For a premium ($15), donors above Coaches Club can upgrade to Club Level seating. Done.
