Coliseum was the last real shot we had at the Rose Bowl that late. That was the game where we had too many receivers on the LOS on that play that should have gotten us a TD from Riley to Vereen.

BTUR;650288 said:

You know, I don't really understand the focus on blowout losses, and why that gets brought up over and over like it's such a big deal. Arkansas is #6 in the BCS standings, and they got blown out by LSU and Alabama. Stanford is #4 and got blown out by Oregon. Kansas State is #8 and they got blown out by Oklahoma. These are Top 10 teams (by one measure), you know? You can go down the list to find other examples (teams like VTech and Baylor) of good teams that got blown out. It's kind of the nature of college football. It happens. It's not that big of a deal. I completely understand where you're coming from when with your complaint about middle of the Pac not being something to brag about, but I don't really understand the blowout thing. When the team starts to do better, the blowouts should happen less frequently...but the truth is, they're just a part of college football and something that's gonna happen from time to time. I'm completely on board with the idea of cutting down on them, and mixing in more quality wins with them...but I think we'd all be happy to have the kind of season Stanford just had, right?

The blow out in 2006 to Tenn stung bad, and stuck around for a while, but that season was great...

It is not if you get blown out... It is context. It is no longer once a season, it is endemic. Tedford teams consistently get destroyed by teams for no reason...

(lets not forget that UCLA or Maryland are not LSU or Oregon)

That is why it is a focus.

Anyway, I still am happy with the season. Actually really happy. Holiday Bowl against Texas is damn nice... certainly does not feel like we were 4-5 or 5-5 in the Pac12... Not letting Furd run away with the Big Game had a lot to do with it, I think.

This is a copy of a post I submitted last year:

How has Cal done vs. the Top Half of the PAC-10? I took a look at the last 5 years (including this year), and this is what I found.

* Note * In the years Cal finished in the top 5, I only included the other 4 teams that made up the Top 5.

2006 - 3 Wins and 1 Loss
2007 - 1 Win and 4 Losses (Cal averaged 22 points / gave up 29 in losses)
2008 - 1 Win and 3 Losses (Cal averaged 17 points / gave up 31 in losses)
2009 - 2 Wins and 3 Losses (Cal averaged 7 points / gave up 34 in losses)
2010 - 0 Wins and 5 Losses (Cal averaged 11 points / gave up 31 in losses)

For a 5 year average, Cal won 26 to 20, and Cal lost 14 - 31. (7 Wins and 16 losses overall)

This is the reason Cal has not succeeded, and goes to average Bowl games. We beat some OCC opponents, and feast on the bottom 5 in the Pac-10. Until we can beat the good teams in the PAC-10, this is all we are going to achieve.

Now add 2011 to the list:

0-5 against the top 5 (Oregon, Stanford, Wash, USC, and UCLA). Average score in the losses is Cal 18 Opponent 33. Average loss is by 15 points. So in the last 6 years, Cal is 7 and 21 against the best in the conference. (.333 winning percentage) These are the facts.

It is not about being a "negabear". We all want Cal to be successful, and I do not care who is coaching or who is playing what position. I want us to be competitive, win games against the best in conference, and go to the Rose Bowl or some other BCS bowl game. Overall winning records are nice, but when you beat nobodys, it is hard to get overly excited.

Losing coach Marshall, bringing Coach M and Kiesau back, and getting Kline should help with the offensive woes. Moreover, we need home run threats at WR, and RB at the same time.. Like Djax and Marshawn, Rodgers + Arrington and Lyman, Pawlawski + white and Dawkins.. We had squat at WR and QB when Best and Vereen were around.

In recent years, there have been some predictable seasons of content and discontent amongst Cal fans, especially those on the message boards:

Season - Discontent:
Extreme frustration at Tedford for not taking us to the next level. For most, this started with the complete collapse in 2007. But for others, it started in 2006 when Tedford couldn't beat SC or Arizona to get us in the Rose Bowl. Or in 2004 when he couldn't/wouldn't play politics like Mack Brown did.

Offseason - Hope and/or Content:
We all love Cal, and each off season we hope for big things. Over the last three years, this has been based solely on Tedford and his staff's impressive recruiting prowess. Before that, it was based on the belief that the staff would get a lot out of our players even though our recruiting classes were not great.

What is new:
But something changed last year. Our first losing season carried the discontent into the offseason (despite a stellar recruiting class). But now that we are back to "normal" (a decent/mediocre season with flashes of promise), the clash between the malcontents and contented Cal fans is even bigger. Some want to return to the same seasonal patterns as before. Others point to the fact that almost everyone agreed that he needed to get us to a BCS by now, and that the bar keeps moving lower.

Personally, I don't see how or why we would either exonerate or bash Tedford based on offseason hopes or disappointments. It needs to be based on the field. And that simply hasn't been good enough. He needs to beat SC, beat stanfurd, and make a run at a Rose Bowl next year. Otherwise, what is the point of getting great recruits?

freshfunk;650460 said:

Cal fan categorization:

Uber Sunshine Pumper - "Woohoo! What you say about Holmoe is definitely true, but I wouldn't say people thought Gilby was particularly doing things the right way.

But there is no question that the opinion of Mike White was fully formed during his tenure, not after. We matched favorably at QB in 04 and at RB both times, but SC had more depth through its roster. It was a case of really bad luck, just like in 1991, when our best teams and cycle peaks coincided with some of the very best teams in the history of the conference.
Cal88

And in 04 USC had a QB and RB that were both Heisman winners, something that's nearly unprecedented in the history of college football.

We still did match them there, but there is no question about USC having had the edge in terms of depth across the roster, Carroll had been pulling in top recruiting classes every year.
Cal88
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The Heisman has everything to do with the talent of the winner, and that of the team around it.

Right now USC has many more players on NFL rosters than we do (44 to 33), which does confirm the fact that they've had a significant edge over us in depth of talent during the last decade.
Cal88
How long do you want to ignore this user?
In 2006 we were PX co-champions, tied with USC, despite having less overall talent, and with Longshore as our QB. 31 players from the 2006 USC football team are in the NFL, so you're definitely wrong about us having a talent advantage, I mean that's almost all their entire starting roster and half of their backups...

<a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="<a
