What about the famous Fenton's Marathon? Run fron the Campanile to Fenton's, eat a banana special, run back to the Campanile, no purging allowed.<br /><br />Seriously, though, what person past, say, their 20s really wants to eat that much ice cream in one sitting?

I live in the South Bend, IN now, and it is bittersweet (no pun intended) to fly in and out of the Oakland airport.<br /><br />Arriving is great -- there is a Peets coffee and a Fentons right next to each other. Of course Fentons doesn't exist outside of the Bay Area, and there are no Peets within 2.5 hours of my house. But then there is always the tension of whether to get coffee and/or ice cream at the airport, or to wait to go to the original spots.<br /><br />Leaving is a disaster. Its like the East Bay and the Oakland airport is rubbing it in. "Yeah, we got stuff like this, and you don't. Remember that when you go back to your cold, gray crap hole."

i'm in, and way past my 20's!...Fenton's is a found memory for sure...

male back then) band house, not the whole band, and it was a banana special (huge) with normal utensils.<br /><br />BUT, the catch was that the freshman didn't know it was coming, and the cook would prepare an especially tasty supper. The frosh were encouraged to eat plenty that night.<br /><br />Then the drive to Fentons and a banana special, with pressure to finish it all.<br /><br />The return trip was over the Arlington with concerted effort to accelerate hard through the corners.<br /><br />BTW, It's apparently not uncommon for college bandsmen at other schools to receive remuneration. The Cal band house was not sponsored or subsidized, and the Cal Band (afaik) didn't provide scholarships or pay. Neither school credit. It was volunteer, and student-run (students arranged/wrote the music, charted field shows, handled training & logistics, etc.,)<br />I would imagine it's much the same today.<br />It's a tremendous organization that provides fabulous social and leadership opportunities to the students.

I had a friend who ate 4 banana specials in one sitting back in the early 70's. He was a Boalt student at the time, and trained for the event by running up and down the stars in the Boalt dorm. And, he was not a big person, maybe 5'8" and relatively slim. I did not personally witness this, but there were many eyewitnesses. To those who might doubt this, I personally witnessed him putting away two in one sitting, perhaps in 45 minutes, spontaneously and with no training. For those who went there in the 70's, would you say that the portions were larger then? I don't remember.<br /><br />On, and here's the rest of the story, as Paul Harvey would say. My friend is blind. They would put the plate in front of him and he would orientate himself by feel, and then go for it. I personally had a hard time downing a Fenton's special, much less a banana special. Truly a remarkable feat.

It's nice to see Fenton's expanding it's local brand however I hope they do not abuse nor dillute it for the sake of profit. Growing up, I don't ever remember not going to Fenton's every Sunday after church. Get back there from time to time, including stopping there on way home from Oregon State game and driving my mom & sister up from San Jose for a visit 10 days ago.<br /><br />MB, hoping the Lafayette location goes through (it'll get me closer / think I can get there in about 40 minutes). I was reading about it last week, and sounds like the lack of parking has been the issue for sometime now, further complicated by the other surrounding store's on going complaints that they're losing customers due to lack of available parking.

The whipped cream topping isn't that great either.<br /><br />In terms of old school ice cream parlors in the east bay, Tucker's in Alameda is better. Back in the day both Ortman's and McCallum's in north Berkeley were also better. McCallum's was the best, it was a nice small joint with a Scottish theme (plaid wallpapers), it shut down way back in the late 80s IIRC, while Ortman lasted a bit longer.
