Tedford has anointed ZM as his quarterback and there is absolutely no possibility that a change will be made until ZM's eligibility runs out. That's the Tedford MO. <br /><br />ZM will be the qb ALL NEXT YEAR.

If Boehm is an accurate QB, why can't he beat out Maynard? Why can't Bridgford or Hinder beat out Maynard? Boggles the mind that they all could be inferior talents.<br /><br />The idea that we will go with Maynard "ALL NEXT YEAR" is downright depressing.

The Daily Cal, after Troy Taylor graduated, all but annointed Perry Klein the starting QB because they saw Pawlawski in limited spring practice and thought he had the mechanics of a shot putter. Hmm, I guess Paws was pretty good after all. <br /><br />We haven't even seen enough of Bridgeford to know whether he's good or not. I expect us to be disappointed in JT's handling of the QB situation yet again. It's just the trend.

The only sliver of pie in the sky, one in a million chance is that Kline will be an EE, so he will have all of spring ball to start picking up the offense early.

I think you hit on why this situation is slightly different, the EE factor, and I would only add that Kline is the highest rated HS QB of the Tedford era?<br /> I don't believe it will happen either, nor do I have the knowledge to speculate how quickly Kline can be a good D-1 QB, but the circumstances are at least a little more interesting..

JT chose Maynard because of his supposedly elusiveness and quickness, NOT because he was the better passer....that should be obvious by now....JT's record of QB's since the Longshore injury should prove that point....LOUSY !!!!

I have suspicions that our "play the senior because he knows my complicated system" coach will just anoint ZM the starter after a fictitious "open" QB competition in the Spring.<br /><br />That said, I do not believe given the loss of receivers and incoming new starters in that position, plus the return of "touch me and I go down" Isi, will probably doom us to another season of mediocrity. How mediocre is anyone's guess at this point, but USC and Oregon will be there, and I have suspicions that you can count on UCLA, WSU, the Arizona schools being much improved and Stanford may also keep a high level of competitive fire. <br /><br />I think though that another season of this and JT's job will be on the hot seat and that after 2013, if it continues he will be gone. So, I am sure it is obvious to him too, so if he wants to play ZM with what we all saw last night, then it becomes his job on the line. A valid scenario, but I would only question: would he even be given the chance to be second string? If he isn't starting, blue-shirting is almost automatic?

We could have easily won that game had we not turned it over so many times. The line got worked and we had almost no running game. Even with all the mistakes we still had our chances. We were not sharp and did not play very smart.

I'm sure Kline is ready for the NFL draft right now. He should skip his Cal career and get ready for the 2015 NFL combine.

If Kline is really as good as he appears to be and can pick up the playbook fast, I think him starting out as a 2nd-string is definitely possible. Tedford won't start a true frosh over an experienced, senior QB to start the 2012 season, but if Kline is out-of-this-world phenom, then I can see Tedford easing him into a starting role after a couple of games like how he did with Aaron Rodgers in 2003.

I am probably more familiar with Zach Kline and his ability to play the position, mentally and physically, than most. And here is what I think is the deal - It will be a compliment and a victory for Zach if he is merely considered part of the mix in 2012 - ie, allowed to take snaps to show if he can get it done. And if he shows that he learns the playbook fast and is not overwhelmed by the speed, then he may get snaps in practice. But I think it a real long shot. There is no question that he has the physical ability to make all the throws and move in the pocket. He probably has now a better ability to make all of the throws than most starting D-1 guys. But that is only a part of the position requirements - actually a small part. The larger part is decision making and comfort, some call it poise, in the pocket/huddle/sidelines. He has to get the playbook down COLD so he makes the right decisions. And get used to the speed. He gets a head start on that in spring ball. Ive seen him step up at each new level he's played at - but this is a whole new ball game, as they say. So keep in mind that the difference between Hinder, Bridgeford, Kline, Maynard, etc. - and whomever starts - is not like night and day - its a very small difference. They are all good players and all highly recruited. The starter will show he can do things slightly faster, slightly "tighter", slightly better. And age and experience helps with that more than talent and arm strength I think. So I would say that it will be a HUGE victory for Zach to win the 2nd string spot and be "blue shirted" such that if Maynard is injured (and I hope that does not happen) he could get a shot. But I don't see Tedford subjecting his team - his senoirs - to the several games of growing pains Zach would have a true freshman - growing pains he could largely work through in practice all next year. Unless, he simply just knocks it out of the park - and there is a chance of that, but it is small. But even saying he has a small chance is a huge compliment. More likely this year he gets to dip his toe in the water in practive, gets redshirted and a chance to really compete for 2013.

And one more thing - I know he is one of the more highly ranked QB's Tedford has gotten in, but keep in mind that while those rankings are fairly good indicators of success over a sampling of many, many players, they are not very good indicators of the success of an individual player. Zach frankly got good initial rankings because of camp sucess and recruiters liked his arm strength and obviously good form. He had a so-so junoir year as a result of some personal family issues that were distracting at best. So I like the way Zach rebounded in his senoir year and blew the doors off both in terms of personal stats and team success. I don't think his rankings adjusted upwards enough to reflect that implrovement. The "knocks" on him were that he didn't run well enough and that he threw everything too hard - ie no touch. He responded by rushing for 8 TDs, having TD runs of 40+ yards a several times and avoiding sacks for a loss. And his "touch" passes were commented on positively for example in the NCS championship game. So he clearly deserves to be considered one of the top handful of QBs in the country - but is that #1 or #5 - no one knows. I ahve seen all of the guys in teh top 10 in camps and other events - and I know Zach is one of the top 3 for sure. But take the rankings and All America stuff with a grain of salt - I know Zach does.

Yes, it's unknowable how quickly Kline picks things up. Matt Barkley waltzed into Columbus as a true frosh and got it done. They were both CA Gatorade players of the year. We can only hope. Would not say Maynard is a "good" quarterback. That's overstating the competition imo.

IMO, he should either RS or, if not RS, go out and win the #2 spot at first....and anything goes after that.

The QB who has yet to play *always* looks better than the one whose actually playing.<br /><br />Perhaps a better question to ask is "what will Coach M learn from this experience so our OL doesn't get b*tchslapped like that ever again?" THAT, folks, is the key to creating an offense that can go to the Rose Bowl. As we've seen, when the OLine is dominant, ZM is capable enough to win games; when the OL is dominated, it doesn't matter who is behind center, we're going to look ugly. And we did get dominated, and it was ugly.

Another thing. We get KA back but beyond that we are looking at starting several true frosh at wr. How does that impact zach maynard? Does it help kline in spring?<br /><br /><br />Re barkley as a frosh, remember USC' s eternal strength has always been a dominant OL. Barkley enjoyed that . Kline would not have that luxury next year. Maynard's "qucknes" may be biggest factor in his favor.

Fellow Bears<br /><br />It doesn't matter who plays QB!.<br />The playcalling doesn't matter!<br /><br />The problem is that we have a Head Coach who refuses to act like a Head coach and do the things that successful HC's do.<br /><br />Head Coaches build team leadership. They build team morale. They make players feel like they are important people. They hire coaches to coach the various parts of the team. They find successful coordinators and then allow them the freedom to coach the way they did that made them desireable hires in the first place.<br /><br />The Defense is the only part of the team that looks ok. Does anyone think that JT has any imput in the D? The Special teams are good when the Head coach places emphasis on them. Does anyone think JT places any special emphasis on special teams? The Offensive system is an amalgam of crap and we know Jt is involved.<br /><br />JT should step away from the X's and O's and look at the team as we do- that is from afar. that allows you to see what in the hell is going wrong and tell the Asst Coaches to get off their asses and correct things.<br /><br />JT should spend his time with the players and make sure these guys know he cares about them and wants 100 % from them all the time.<br /><br />Step #1 is to get in his car and take a trip to Concord,ca and stop at the local Catholic high school and ask questions about how to get players to sell out on every play. I doubt he will do that because he makes 2.299 mil more than the High school coach. But at this point I think we have to wonder who should be the higher paid of the 2.
