This is largely due to his personality/character flaws -- namely his introversion, lack of charisma/personality, conservative nature and reluctance to take risks, lack of creativity, stubborness, etc. <br /><br />While he might do great as an assistant, like he was at Oregon as Bellotti's OC, he just does not thrive in the head coaching position. He's like Cal's version of Tyrone Willingham. Hopefully, Cal can find and lure a better candidate in the future after Tedford's reign mercifully ends eventually,
