at the Sugar Bowl... No way they they should overturn that catch. Ugh.

I knew someone was doomed as soon as I saw the glasses guy. That was a catch; in any case it was far from indisputable to overturn. These guys all need to beg Coales for forgiveness. Such incompetence. So sad. The guy in the booth needs to be fired. What was he looking at? Coales made one incredible grab for the ages and actually had the presence to tuck it under his arm. Thanks for taking a moment away from 20 year old kids old man.

Me too. I turned the game on in the 3rd quarter, saw the glasses guy and turned to my daughter and said "someone is going to get screwed by a bad call, just watch". Sure enough.

How was Giorgio called for illegal motion for his mis-step in the Oregon game last year but the Michigan kicker was not? That guy took a step right before the ball was snapped. I thought that was illegal?

It wasn't a catch.

And, once again, the kicker who executed, "won" the game! Clutch.

He also false started on the fake fg they ran earlier in the game. I remember Tavecchio getting called for a false start during his career only to miss the ensuing attempt.

Not only that but it looks like they could have but didn't call a false start on the kicker though they did on Giorgio last year such that it cost us the game.

Edit: I see now others noticed the same thing. Cal fans have long memories.

Any reffing crew with the glasses guy is the worst. My buddy who is a Wolverine is lucky his team didn't get the short end of the stick today. Feel bad for Coale the receiver.

I rewound to watch that again. He definitely false started just like Giorgio supposedly did. Damnit. Miller just tweeted about it too, so you know that sticks with at least some of the team. I don't care who wins this game, but it really pisses me off that we had something called on us that I don't think I've seen called before or since...

It would be even more of a travesty if they had let the play stand.

I've been as critical as any over the officiating but this crew wasn't any worse then the other crews I've seen this bowl season....the only crew I thought was outstanding was the ACC crew that did the Rose Bowl...all the other games had just as many dumb a$$ weird calls from other crews as well....

once the elbow hit, he's down. It was a catch.

And it sure as heck wasn't indisputable. Ruling on the field stands.

Jay Stricherz -- the man, the legend, the ref that cost us a Rose Bowl in 2006 (at the Arizona game).

<img src="<img src="<img src="<img src="" />" />" />" />

I assume the review guy is also a P12 guy too. Old men taking a joyful moment away from 20 year old kids. That's great.

Google Jay Stricherz referee and you'll come up with various articles questioning his capability, including this one, in which he is suspected to have been the official who was suspended by the conference. <a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="http://blogs.mercurynews.com/collegesports/2009/10/27/pac-10-football-ratings-official-suspended-and-its-about-time/""""" class="postlink " He pulls the ball in to his body as he hits the ground. I don't see him lose control of the ball at any point until he comes to a stop and appears to drop it intentionally but maybe that split second before he slides out of bounds doesn't constitute a catch. The ball does touch the ground but he's alreay secured it and it doesn't appear to aid in the catch or cause him to lose any control. I still don't think there's enough to overturn the call given the "indisputable" standard. It was an amazing effort either way.

Full video: <a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="<a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> />
This angle looks like a catch to me: <a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="<a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank"> class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href=" class="postlink " target="_blank">

On that last pass, I didn't think he secured the ball before he hit the ground. That is, if the rule says that the ground cannot help him secure the ball (as it seemed to be according to the announcers), then I don't think he did.

With that said, I don't think it was conclusive enough to overturn the call on the field of a fair catch.

I can see where a viewer thinks that Coale has control of the ball throughout the clip embedded in your post, oursdor. Really, I can see that one could make the argument that Coale made a catch.

At the same time, I see that Coale did not have possession of the ball until after both Coale and the ball hit the ground.

I can see both sides of the argument, but I honestly believe that the officiating crew got the call right.

If the call can be seen both ways the ruling on the field HAS to stand. The video is inconclusive. The call on the field should have stood no matter what it was.

I think the officials applied the appropriate standard.

I believe that most viewers think that because Coale ended up with the ball in his possession at the end, he had control throughout. That's different from the standard that the officiating crew applied: the receiver must have possession before his elbow hit the turf and maintain possession and control through the end of the action. Coale didn't do that. Therefore, no catch.

It just ain't a Stricherz game without a controversial, game-changing call. <3

The instant replay process operates under the fundamental
assumption that the ruling on the field is correct. Ruling was touchdown on the field and should have stood.

Argh ... maybe this game showing how crappy Pac 12 officials are on such a national level will prompt the leadership to change the officiating crews once and for all (psst Oregon is probably still holding as we speak) :headbang

Could have gone either way.

Which reminds me, I really like Mike Pereira on Fox.
