September 15th...

I've never been there before. Was thinking of taking my pop as a birthday gift. Are they anything like Oregon or ASU fans, or can we can we expect better, especially since we are not a conference foe?

We are not Michigan to them of course, but it seems that it can be a bit rowdy there:

<a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/visitor-seating-osu""""" class="postlink " Someone was saying it's pretty bad, like $C bad. But who knows? When I went to East Lansing in 2002, they were some of the most polite and respectful fans around -- before, during and after the game. And they were plenty loud for their team. The couple I was sitting next to congratulated me on the win (like I threw the halfback pass to Kyle Boller or ran a punt back to the house instead of LaShaun Ward). I had a really nice impression of Michigan State. Remember, 70,000 disappointed fans? Trickeration. Preparation. What the heck happened to that Tedford? I want him back!

That's good to hear KAB. It seems that tOSU might be a different kind of atmosphere though. I really don't know... I personally don't mind and can deal with it, but my pop, at his age, well, that concerns me...

East Lansing, from Hawaii is quite a trek. At least I seem to recall that you are in Hawaii...

I was living in Pasadena at the time. It was a fun trip to the Midwest -- Chicago, then drove to Detroit. Got to see the Cubs and Tigers, and was there for Ernie Harwell's farewell ceremony the day after we beat the Spartans.

I've never been to a big away game [okay, I've been to the Big Game, but I don't think that was quite the same stratosphere of harassment, given Stanford's apathy for football], and the thought of being heckled makes me a little nervous...but I'm going to be a senior next year, so hell if I pass up a chance to see one of the most legendary stadiums in the country.

Yeah, I'm in.

I'm probably twice your age, and from experiences, if you can swing it now, do it. I was giving it serious consideration until the Holiday Bowl. After trekking to Holiday Bowl '04, Tennessee '06, Poinsettia '09, Nevada '10 and Holiday Bowl '11, I'm not sure I can take the double-whammy of spending serious money on humiliation any more.

I need to somehow separate the pleasure of the trip from the outcome of the game, and I'm not sure I can do that.

You have to weigh the desire to see historical stadiums vs. Cal winning games. We traveled to away games for over 25 years. The experience, memories are highlights of our "sporting life". I all of those years we won very few games. Agree that fan culture has changed, and not for the best.

But I will be in the "Horseshoe" come September. Wouldn't miss it for the world. Don't worry about the OSU fans. There are always a few jerks (well, may more at ASU), but we have always been welcomed by the opposing fans, and many of them look forward to a day at Memorial Stadium in their lifetime.

We attended a game at Michigan, where Cal played an excellent game (but lost). The star of that game was Oski, who absolutely charmed the Wolverine fans. They actually cheered for him.

On the other hand, after 3 Holiday Bowls I don't think I'm in any hurry to rush back to Qualcomm Stadium.

Mama Bear;666527 said:

You have to weigh the desire to see historical stadiums vs. Cal winning games.

That's kind of how I'm thinking. As a Cal fan, I'm getting tired of sitting through disappointing road performances (Tennessee, Maryland, Nevada, Holiday Bowl, Oregon '09, USC '10, and many others). As a college football fan, it's hard to pass up the oppurtunity to see a game at Ohio State. I'll probably end up going, but just lower my expectations that we will play well.

All my road trips have been excruciating . . . but I've been planning this trip for a year or two. Gonna start by staying at the brother-in-laws house that's 10 minutes from the stadium and putting up with all the damn buckeye fans. I am anticipating a LONG but memorable trip.

We, too, were considering traveling to tOSU for the experience of the big stadium and all the reasons people have cited. However, while on the trolley to the HB, we were sitting across from a very nice couple (in their 60's) who were Longhorn fans that traveled to the game from Texas, and go to most road Longhorn games. They said that the tOSU fans were the worst they had ever encountered. Not just the student jerks that every campus has their fair share of, but the alumni and everyone else.

I've since been asking around and the unanimous consensus is the same. We are strongly re-considering the trip.

Combine the trip with MLB games at Cincy, Cleveland and/or Pittsburgh. My friend who has been to every single MLB park says his favorite is Pittsburgh. If I have a prayer of a chance of coming out, I would love to see PNC as well. And maybe pre-season or first week of NFL?

I had been seriously considering making this trip as well, however, after traveling back to South Bend to see this years ND v USC game ( I know, I know ) and speaking to many many ND fans they warned me in advance about the OSU fan....
At least 10 of them told me they are the worst fan base in terms of rude, belligerent behavior......

Will that be toned down based on the lack of historic rivalry who knows, but it makes the trip worth a second thought....

we drove 9 hours to go to the Tennessee game - and except for the second half of that game - it was a great trip. Primarily, this was due to how warm the Tennessee fans were, especially before the game when they opened up their tailgates to Cal fans.
So, we'll go to Columbus.

Its Ohio people ......I would plan on flying in the night before and flying out the night of the game. The stadium is sweet, but everything else sucks. Ohio is a fat, inbred, red neck fly over state. I live in Nashville and go to columbus for biz periodically. I hate that town and I really hate the state.

I live less than a 5 hour drive from the stadium. If the game were played tomorrow, I probably wouldn't go. I am dejected from the Holiday Bowl, and I just don't feel like paying the money (travel, ticket, food, etc.) to go see another Tedford-era disappointment. But maybe I will be more pumped-up by September.

I have lived in South Bend for 3 football seasons now, and I still have not yet gone to a ND game. I am a fan of Cal, not of historic stadiums. But I take embarrassing losses badly.

I've already booked my flight and hotel room. Now I only need to resolve that minor detail, the ticket to the game itself...

Seriously, though, you go to this game because it's a cathedral of college football, and it couldn't be any more fun than to be at a cathedral of college football while rooting for your favorite team who hasn't played there since 1971*.

*<a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="<a Thinking about going as would love to see a game in that setting. But having suffered through some bad road losses recently (including both UCLA and HB this year), need to make sure I take a couple extra days to do something non-football related in case we have another lousy result.
Which of course makes it more of a lengthy and expensive trip. So still pondering if I really want to do that.

Just place a small wager on OSU to win that pays enough to cover your costs. That way, if Cal loses it doesn't cost you anything. If they win, you won't care as much about the cash...

I'm planning on attending, even though I've been warned the OSU fans are less than friendly.

It seems that the tOSU fanbase is not the most hospitable, that's for sure. Our school colors don't help any too I suppose, lol. That's unfortunate as I think I can't subject my dad to such, especially at his age. Might not be much of a birthday gift for him... Drat.

I live in Columbus, and will chime in with my thoughts.

First, the fan base. It is TRUE that these are some of the most arrogant and delusional fans in the world. 90% of them are borderline ignorant about programs around the country and blindly follow the Buckeyes. Only a small percentage of Buckeye fans are actual graduates of the school. I would equate the OSU following to that of a rabid pro football team fan base. HOWEVER, people in Columbus are in general VERY nice. The vast majority of the fans attending the game will treat you cordially, even nicely, if you respond in kind. I would not provoke the OSU fans. There will also inevitably be some a-holes among the crowd. Just do as the Penguins do in Medagascar--smile and move on.

Next, the game day experience. There are few in the country like this one. The tradition, the stadium (which is huge and beautiful), the scripted Ohio and the dotting of the "i", the band, the knowledgeable fans, etc. There is a pep rally in the basketball stadium (filled to capacity) before EVERY home game. Folks tailgate hours before game time. The fact that Ohio Stadium is on campus and within walking distance away from various restaurants and bars also make pregame festivities easy to arrange.

Now, the city itself. There is NO must see site in Columbus. If you want to make it a long weekend, I would suggest staying in the Arena District (just google it) as it is the new hip area in Columbus with a number of restaurants and bars close by. It is also within walking distance away from Short North, an area of several city blocks filled with art galleries, bars and restaurants, and interesting shops. You can also walk to downtown Columbus from the Arena district and see the Ohio State Capital. The Arena district is only a few miles away from the OSU campus. On game day, there are various "park and ride" options from various spots within the greater Columbus area so getting to the game wouldn't be a problem.

Places to see around Columbus include the OSU campus itself (nothing to write home about other than the fact that it's huge), Hocking Hill State Park (one hour south of Columbus), Dayton Air Force museum (one hour west of Columbus, and is pretty awesome with 3 hanger full of old and modern fighters, bombers, spy planes, etc). Cleveland is a two hour drive northeast, Cincinnati two hours southwest, Detroit four hours northwest, Indianapolis three hours west. If you must visit another city, I would skip all of those and drive three hours east to Pittsburgh, which has a recently revived downtown that is in as beautiful a setting as you'll see in any midwest city. A previous poster also mentioned PNC Park in Pittsburgh, and it really is all that.

That's about it for now. I'll be at the game with my wife and maybe my (by that time) 4 1/2 old daughter. I have a lot of colleagues and friends to shut up. Hopefully Cal comes through.

It partly hinges and ticket prices for the game and that info. isn't available right now. I'd say there is good possibility of going, but everything has to fall into place and those that go should travel as a pack because it can get rough.

What sections are designated for visitors, and is there a particular section or area that might be best or most recommended? Thanks much.

I was told it's about a 2 hour drive from Columbus, does that sound about right?

Kinda thinking about it, but it's a lot of money (would cost me 2x going to a cal home game) and I wasn't too impressed with the Holiday Bowl performance on the offensive side.

Cal89;666400 said:

Columbus airport is CMH. Total air travel about 7 to 8 hours (from SJC), with one stop, typically Dallas or Chicago... .

SFO should have non-stops to pitt, cincy, and cleveland, which would let you check out another city and stretch out in a rental car instead of an airplane seat for those addition 3 hours or so. unfortunately, the reds and pirates are out of town that weekend, though the indians are around, cleveland is not all that special (does have rock and roll HOF).

I've heard Columbus on gameday can be rough, but it can't be this bad:
<a href="<a href="<a koream offers some sage advice-tie the cal road game with other activities that you are passionate about

i can't wait for the osu game as i'll be traveling with a golf buddy and walking 36 holes a day

columbus gems include (in preference): the golf club, muirfield village, scioto and double eagle

will also play camargo in cincinnati, inverness in toledo, oakland hills in detroit and oakmont in pittsubrgh as all are within driving/short flights distance of columbus

as for osu fans, who cares? when visiting an unknown stadium i usually wear a white shirt the 1st time which was a lifesaver in the soaking humidity of maryland...no need to wear cal gear unless you really want to...plus it is always funny when the people around me on the road are shocked when i start screaming after the 1st cal touchdown

nothing better than a cal roadtrip!

go bears
