He is perfect for the college game.

If Tedford can't turn this around in the next year or two that he'll inevitably get, I'd be happy to try it. I wonder if Pete could duplicate his success when he's not guaranteed the recruiting classes he was at USC. Tedford had a one loss regular season in 2004 and got 4 5*'s, including two HS recruits in the top-10 at their position (if you count Reed, who was the #6 "dual threat QB"<img src="<img src="<img src="<img src="" />" />" />">, and a Holiday Bowl to show for it. After a 2 loss regular season in 2002 Carroll got to go to the BCS and got 9 HS commits who were top 10 in the country at their position, including the #1 QB, #1 and #6 WR, and #2 DE in the country. He did more at USC than his predecessors to be sure, but building that program was helped by a TON of factors that have kept USC strong for decades. When his teams have been on more equal footing with their competition he's been mediocre, albeit in the NFL. Even still, his last year at USC wasn't the same despite excellent recruiting, and he looked burned out. At Cal, he could end up like Dennis Erickson at ASU.

His track record suggests he's an excellent coach. I'm very skeptical of the idea that Cal will shell out the money not only for him, but also for a top notch staff to go with him. College football isn't the NFL, and while Cal might not be USC in terms of what it has for recruiting, Tedford is showing it's good enough to bring in a lot of talent, especially with the new facilities.

Which "Pete" is better?<br /><br />If the time came to part ways with Coach Tedford, I would give Chris Peterson a serious look before flying to Pete Carroll's house to hand over the keys to the Program.<br /><br />I can only base this on gut feelings, but I think PC would be on a "retirement package" mode, looking for a "golden (bear) parachute" if you will and [U]may[/U] go through the motions of smiling for the cameras and saying all the right things for the Bay Area Press, words he knows we would all eat up as loyal followers and sycophants. The team would mysteriously underachieve while Petey would look blameless due to his prior success at U$C -- "Hey, it's not MY fault...it's still Cal after all....what do you want from me?"<br /><br />Meanwhile, I think the more youthful and ambitious Chris Peterson would be trying to lead the Golden (Bear) Horde over the Steppes to wreak and pillage the entire Football Continent for the glory of Cal Football. In other words, Cal would overachieve. <br /><br />JMO.
