With all the focus on the coming QB competion next spring now that Zach Kline is enrolled, there is all this talk about us not playing our elite 11 QBs. But does anybody know what makes somebody an elite 11 QB? Mansion was elite 11. Riley was elite 11 and Longshore was elite 11. None of them are going to see any NFL time. So why is it so important?

It means mom and dad ponied up the tuition for elite 11 camp

it is tryout based-regional camps, then the invites. Despite Cal's mixed results, the Elite 11 track record is on par with any of the All-Star games...

A bunch of guys with pretty good arms will spend some time going through a few drills after which 1 will enroll at Cal, spend 3 years learning our "highly complex" offense before proving he probably wasn't so elite after all. It sort of reminds me of Little League tryouts where you'd spend a couple of days watching a bunch of 10-12 YO kids field, throw, take a few BP swings and run. There were always a few who looked wonderful, then turned out not to be able to play when the real games started. The "eyeball" test is a legitimate rating tool but is probably overweighted in practice.

The Elite-11 camp, was started by Mission Viejo HC Bob Johnson and former Cal WR Andy Bark. The idea was to create a camp, providing advanced instruction to HS QB's. The thought was that too many QB's from HS who were moving on to college were ill-prepared to play the position, mainly due to poor understanding of the position and the limited coaching ability of their own HS coaches. 11 players were selected for a week-long clinic on how to play the QB position. Not sure on the costs and how the selections were made. To get selected was considered a prestigious recognition. Previous attendees were brought back as 'couselers' to help. Today, it's been watered down, still unique but, seems to have lost it's luster.<br /><br />Today, there's several other competing QB camps doing similar activities. Johnson and Bark I believe are no longer affiliated since its now a ESPN/Nike property. There's several competitions leading up to the selection of who gets to attend. This past season, ESPN showed parts of what goes on, it basically turned into the 'Trent Dilfer Show'.

Regardless of whether or not he is viewed favorably as a pro QB it's often the case that those who are less proficient still make very good coaches. Was he pretty dramatic in the show this past year? Absolutely! You really couldn't tell all of the coaching the kids got but it seemed to me that what they did show sounded pretty straightforward and beneficial.

To be an effective coach, it doesn't matter how physically talented you are. It matters how well you understand the game, and even more importantly than that, how effectively you can communicate with the players to actually teach them what you want them to learn.

I will say that when I watched the show I didn't hear the kind of tip a friend of mine once got from Joe Montana. My friend was a pretty good high school QB and played college ball (though not at the QB position). He once attended a camp where one of the coaches was Montana, who gave him some memorable advice. Basically he said that you should complete your throw as if you're flicking a booger. Try it some time (the throwing not the flicking) and it seems like a pretty good visual aid.

Another was a regular season starter and one was a 1st round pick. The class also had 3 (Mustain, Neil Caudle, Zach Frazer) who pretty much bombed, 3 (Devlin, Snead, Williams) who had decent college careers as well as Riley and Cody Hawkins, starters but not stars. His year might have been one of the better groups. It is still, IMHO, largely a beauty contest.

I think the right question is how many elite 11 QBs go to high D1 teams? <br /><br />My point is...you are pretty 'elite' to be picked up by one of the BCS teams. <br />Whether you succeed there is another question.<br /><br />I think the problem is being an elite 11 QB sets too high an expectation, as being selected does NOT mean you are one of the TOP 11 QBs in the nation (or what ever number are now included in the camp)

Almost all of the candidates for elite eleven status will get a BCS school scholarship offer and, no doubt, are worthy of some consideration. What they do in the way of drills (or nay combine type approach) is what I say doesn't mean much compared to actual game performance.
