You are supposed to take 15 units a semester to graduate on schedule. 9 units IS a reduced load. I'm not inclined to think ill of Maynard or any other kid that runs into academic issues, but the NCAA asking them to pass at a 60% load is not unreasonable.

If indeed Maynard has to sit out 4 games next season, would those necessarily have to be the first 4? If so, that would be a huge blow given that those include road trips to tOSU and USC. We`d have to face an AA 3-4yr starter QB at the Coliseum with a new QB... :headbang

We`re probably losing the USC game on the road with Maynard, but with an inexperienced QB this looks like a blowout on paper, not a good way to start the conference race... As well @tOSU is a winnable game with Maynard, but with a new QB it might be out of reach.

Let's be realistic. Whether the starter is Maynard or someone else, they are going to need a lot of work to be prepared for the season. Maynard has not shown that he is the kind of guy that can just breeze through spring and fall camp and start. If he is out for 4 games, one third of the season, including back to back trips to OSU and USC, we are going to need to identify a starting QB out of AB, Hinder, Boehm and Kline and then we are going to have to get that guy ready. That will leave Maynard with basically no reps. Maynard is going to have a tremendously steep uphill battle to get the job back come game 5. If he doesn't have a really tough time, that will mean our QB play has basically sucked for 4 games and will be really bad news.

Given that Maynard was probably taking the least academically rigorous (to put it kindly) classes offered at Cal, it's squarely his fault if the rumor is true and he was unable to maintain even a barely passing average in classes that probably require only regular physical attendance and basic literacy to pass.

Not that hard if you consider that with 12 units, only failing a single class (4 units) could be enough to make you ineligible.

Given this, I wonder why the NCAA has such a rule considering that 9 units are likely pretty arbitrary as a workload requirement, because one 4 unit class may demand much more than another 4 unit class. Furthermore, It makes more sense to require a minimum workload, and then require good academic standing. Taking 12 units during Fall semester and failing one class, even though you have maintained 3.5 GPA is a lot different than passing 12 units, but having a 2.4 GPA overall.

10 pages of reading and I saw not one piece of marginally conclusive evidence that Maynard is getting suspended.

There is a reason we don't know anything about this. Maynard is a good kid either way, and our best quarterback. It's unfair to write all this **** about him based on a god damned internet rumor. It was a dbag move, no doubt. Now that he is getting slammed, he appears apologetic, but you cannot unring that particular bell.
