While it appears Leigh has really hit bottom it is always unwise to criticize someone from a press story. To say it was a shame he went to Cal is to have not lived through some of the times when he did good for Steve Bartkowski and elevated our image within the NFL. Who knows what donations he may have given back to Cal during his career because of his Cal for his education, and in his time as ASUC President he acted honorably in a very bad time and I know because I was there. <br /><br />Your comment is like saying it was a shame that Professor Oppenheimer taught at Cal because he lost his security clearance and it was assumed he was a Communist because some whacked out Dr. Strangelove figure, who ended up at Stanford's Hoover Institution, called him one out of petty jealousy.<br /><br /><blockquote><div class="name-said">OskiMD;674905 said:</div><hr>It's a shame this guy went to Cal. Alcohol addiction is real. As are addictions to other and illegal substances. I feel sorry for Leigh and for his family; I would not think of writing him off or out of the Cal family for his failures.<br />As for "skipping out" on his debts, federal bankruptcy is commonly used by people and businesses which for one reason or another do not have the assets to pay their debts. I fail to see the necessity for casting moral judgments of shame for availing oneself of the federal statutes that allow for rehabilitation.

Most people who I have dealt with in this matter would have rather been visiting the dentist for fillings with no novocaine. It frequently involves catastrophic medical bills to children or themselves. Desperate measures to avoid BK often result in heroic efforts to pay off debt, but in the end these are typically wasteful and painfully quixotic because they never had a chance.

BL 72, don't you remember? You usually have a great memory. Leigh, after years of claiming to be a left-winger, was elected ASUC president in the Spring of 1970 as the moderate candidate who said "there must be a better way." Over the summer of 1970, it turned out that he had had a student secretary take a French exam for him. (I knew her, and went to law school with her.) So he went up in front of a campus disciplinary board, which put him on disciplinary probation with the condition that he couldn't serve as president. So he resigned because he had to.<br /><br />I think his substance abuse problems preceded the alcoholism, but I am not positive. Plenty of Medical Doctors get sued for malpractice because they are too concerned with being full of themselves and making their tee times at the country club.

I appreciate him putting his personal/financial life before a Federal Bankruptcy Judge. When innundated with large debts the bankruptcy court is really the best way to sort out your obligations in a fair way.<br /><br />Corporations do it all the time. Steinburgh should feel no shame.<br /><br />Espescially given his statement in the Bankruptcy papers. <br /><br /><blockquote><div class="name-said">Quote:</div><hr>"I began to check out episodically for short periods. She was very pleased that she had no pain and wasn't going to be numb during lunch time.<br />You might need to expand your horizons.<br /><br />On the other hand, if one's dentist still uses amalgam you better hope he uses enough "novocaine".<br /><br />CHEERS!!

Steinberg did a lot of great things at Cal, and after Cal. He got his head bashed in as student body President during the 60s, trying to protect a student protester, was the first agent to encourange players to give to charities, support causes, have social awareness, and not act like dumb jocks, he helped many a athlete become a wealthy and stay wealthy, and he has been very active in helping Cal athletics. He has his demons, and they have caught-up with him. Can everyone posting the nasty against him say they are perfect? I am sure Stenberg is embarrassed, and regrets some of things he has done. I hope he turns around what was once a successful life, and can redeem his image. If you met him, you would like him. A nice guy in person ... really.

Why everyone feels this guy deserves sympathy, aside from all of you AA types, is beyond me. And after all those years and millions of dollars he made, he only has "some stocks" and no other assets? This f*ck up should spend the rest of his life WORKING and PAYING BACK all of his damn debts.

They are reluctant of file for bankruptcy because they are afraid they will be considered failures and irresponsible by the public.
