I have no idea what it means, beyond, "a QB competition that ends up with someone other than Maynard as the starter, because I've decided anyone else is better than Maynard."

I don't know if it's true that Bridgeford out-threw Maynard in spring and fall, as many have claimed, because I didn't see it first hand. On the other hand, Bridgeford's throwing ability wouldn't have been relevant if he couldn't get away from the rush. In fact, if he was semi-mobile like a Longshore, for example, the need to rush throws in order to avoid sacks might have resulted in as many or more INTs than Maynard threw. By the way, in the other thread where I asked if Kline should be played behind the current offensive line, I don't think a majority of the replies even supported that, suggesting that just changing QBs might not by itself make a difference.

We're still locked in the debate over whether to trust Tedford's judgment. The negs don't, and I'm not all that confident either, but I don't see what can be done about it, unless you believe that hooey that Maynard is only playing because of Keenan Allen.

I view it as not having an assumption that someone is going to start and only being convinced if another player is head and shoulders better than the presumed starter. I view it as being open to playing another QB if the starter is struggling to perform during actual games. I am fully aware that QB controversy is not ideal and players' confidence should be protected. I have no personal preference since every single player on the team is a Bear.

Having said that, whoever starts should have our full support.

I just wish Nate didn't get injured (or that Tedford sat him to heal up) or that Riley had time to build up his confidence and play behind a better line. I think they could have been really good. The Oregon State game, the QB controversy, and the poor pass protection under Marshall just messed with Riley's head.

Quote:

i see no evidence maynard's mobility resulted in a significant amount of less sacks.

I agree with this. I don't think Maynard's mobility ended up being nearly the positive JT thought it might be before the season. It's good to be able to get away from the rush, but if you're not a great pocket QB and don't get the ball out quick enough, many times that "rush" is really the QB's fault. We also didn't do much running with Maynard - besides 1 or 2 games, his running wasn't really an asset at all. Lastly, while yes, Maynard is pretty mobile, he also goes down really, really easily, so that takes away from his mobility being a positive, as well.

Quote:

maynard had excellent pass protection for most of our losses. for instance he had all day to throw against ucla.

I do agree with the general point. Throughout the season, there were many times where the ball just wasn't delivered fast enough and the rush eventually became an issue, despite solid blocking. Even in the Texas game I saw instances of this, though I wouldn't say the oline did a solid job against Texas pass rush at all. As for the UCLA game, just from my own memory, I thought that was the worst game the line played all season. They had games where they let up a little more pressure, but UCLA's defense couldn't get pressure on anyone, and I thought their DL outplayed our OL that game. So at least from what I remember, I don't agree Maynard had all day to throw. That said, I'm sure there were some plays where the line held up and he didn't throw quickly enough.

Maynards inability to read progressions has a lot to do with his poor pocket presense. We all know that he locks onto 1 or 2 receIvers. His inability to make these reads affects his decision making and awareness in the pocket.

Just curious, if anyone actually knows: how many college QBs are asked to make more than 1-2 reads per play?

Tedford's pro style offense is notoriously difficult and demands it's QB to make a lot of reads depending on the play.

Hmm. I mean, having never coached at any level and lacking serious time watching tape, I can't exactly disagree with you. But after years and years of watching casually, I would say the best QBs at the collegiate level (Barkley, Luck, etc) are probably capable of making their way through a full progression (assuming their OL can actually block that long, which is not a safe assumption). "Most" QBs, it at least appears to me, make 1-2 reads and either 1) try to throw the ball to a receiver 2) try to throw the ball away 3) run for their lives 4) get the sh*t knocked out of them.

I would say this is true even in the NFL. Anybody catch John Skelton play QB for the Cardinals this year? It honestly seemed like he made exactly one read on every single throw: is Larry Fitzgerald open? It was a meaningless read, because whether or not he was open was irrelevant. Skelton threw it to him anyway, coverage be damned.

Let me be a little more specific. A QB generally pre snap reads the D, then makes the appropriate adjustment (audible). On a pass play he must then go through his progressions and quickly make his decision as to whom to pass to, where, whether to run, etc. There are a lot of variables and these are difficult things and some QB's intrinsically are better at it than others. There are a lot of factors like experience, physical ability, scheme, and coaching that enter into it. It's complicated. That's why being a QB is so difficult.

This is my primary objection. There have been many examples in all sports where good practice players stunk up the field. My problem is not the Spring competition, but that i want to see two QB's at the beginning of the season competing in the early games...can you say Reggie and Aaron?

Why can't we go back to that. Mack brown was doing it in a bowl game practically and several frosh have started in the Conference.

Besides remember the Triple OT win against USC...it was Reggie that had to come in and win it, so we need a #2 with the ability to come off the bench or pick up the slack if ZM cannot cut it.

:gobears:

All the other responses were some version of, "I've already decided Maynard sucks and can't be redeemed. Bring on the second-stringer!!" I'm not even saying that that's wrong, but it is what most of you are effectively saying.

In regard to Phantomfan's analysis, one possibility, other than the one suggested, is that the "confirmation bias" was Tedford's attempt to avoid the QB of the week turmoil that occurred between Riley and Longshore. Now that we've gone through a year where he stuck to the starter, and the starter performed inconsistently, maybe he'll go back to the QB of the week approach, and hope someone emerges as a result. Neither approach has been successful for us, however.

The year before, he avoided by handing the job to Riley, and by the fact that when Riley got hurt, both Sweeney and Mansion demonstrated why Riley had been given the job.

Very insightful. Sorry for being vague. The number of progressions of course depends upon the formation, play and read. Point is, it is difficult. Maynard did indeed get better as his season progressed, as did his pocket presense. The initial point was that his tendency to lock on receivers was related to his decision making and poor pocket presence.

Our Domicile;675352 said:

The keyword is "progressions".

Phantomfan;675094 said:

"Fair" means that the best QB starts.

What people think is happening is that Tedford pre-selects (ie at the start of training) who will start and then starts them regardless of how the group does gouing forward in the off season or season.

People tend to believe that Tedford shows favoritism to certain players. When he develops that favoritism, he develops a strong confirmation bias.

For example, when the 2nd string RB fumbles, he is often pulled from the game. When the starting RB fumbles twice, he does not change. Or, When the 2nd team QB throws poorly, you may never see him again. When the starter gives away the ball a handful of times, he is left in until the clock is at 0:00...

People tend to believe this because players have said as much on video (regarding making mistakes under Tedford are not tolerated "unless you're the starter"<img src="<img src="<img src="" />" />">.

That makes it seem "unfair" because once the choice of starter is made, it is a done deal.

Personally, I think Tedford picks who he thinks will win the most games, and then sticks with that regardless of what happens because he thinks changing (unless it is planned preseason - ie Rodgers and RR) is admitting he was wrong, rather than what a normal person would think - the variables changed...

<br not the musical artist). You can spend hours in that site wading through strategy articles that are both insightful and accessible even to the layman. He's largely the reason I hope we one day move toward an airraid system that would simplify a lot of what we're asking from our QBs while still generating results - exactly what you want on this level of football (even though it's more or less what you see Rodgers and Brady doing to perfection in the NFL, but I imagine its a little more complex there).

"Fair" means that each qb had an equal opportunty to win the job and is held to the same standard of performance. Equal opportunity means equal snaps with the first team in practice and, if the competition remains close, a chance for the backup to take meaningful snaps (i.e., not just garbage time) in early season games. However, as JT proved, life is not always fair.

All reports from practice last spring were that Bridgford and Maynard were fairly equal in their performance. In fact, a majority felt that Bridgford had played slightly better - close enough that the competition should continue. It was therefore quite surprising that JT named Maynard the starter after spring practice - something he had rarely done in the past (see longshore v. riley).

These facts lead many to conclude that the process was not fair in the sense that JT did not afford an equal opportunity. That perception was compounded when JT did not put bridgford in when Maynard was really struggling against Oregon, USC, and UCLA. Of course, by then, Bridgford had lost the opportunity to gain experience, so JT could hide behind that fact.

Jeff82;675064 said:

And ZM's mobility helped a lot in Cal's win over Texas in the Holiday Bowl.
Heck if AB had been the Cal QB, we would have seen nothing but fumbled snaps, fumbled hand offs, sacks and INT's. No way Cal would have won that bowl game. :p

Usually the deep throws were way over everyone's head, or they were off to one side or they were short. Cal would get a 1st down only when the WR had to slow down to make the catch and the DB would run into the WR. Pass Interference. First Down - Cal.

Never gets old. You don't even have to be a Cal fan to appreciate it. Although I doubt many from SC can stomach it hah.

Jeff82;675064 said:

I actually did attend all 3 of the Spring public practices - and I will say after the 1st one, I thought Bridgeford was going to win the QB job for sure.

After the 2nd one, I thought Maynard had improved quite a bit and could see some of his quickness and athleticism on display. (Yes, people can argue what they saw during the regular season - but I am just talking about Spring Ball). One play that stood out was a goal line snap that went to his right - he scrambled over, picked it up, and instead of throwing it away - scooted around the right end for a TD.

After the 3rd one, I thought the QB battle was pretty much evened up - with each having a different style. I agree with all the Bridgeford pumpers that he seemed much more comfortable in the pocket and that his throws just looked better. On the other hand, I felt that Maynard's athleticism really did give us the chance to do some different things. I recall one play where he rolled out, chased by the rush, and just as he got to the sideline, managed to zing a pass to a well covered Jones on the sideline. My brother and I both looked at each other with that, "hmm, haven't seen THAT at Cal before" look.

Must admit, I assumed that there would be additional competition prior to start of the season - but I certainly didn't feel that he was completely lost compared to Bridgeford - so I figured JT had seem more in practice than I had and felt (since neither had started or even really played in a game at Cal) someone was going to need as many snaps as possible to be ready by kickoff.

Again, based on my small sample size (I only saw 3 practices), the impression I had was Maynard made up a lot of ground - and that demands for "fair competition" were more from fans upset "because my favorite didn't get selected".

I'm not saying Maynard played well enough in 2011 to silence all critics (far from that) - but saying JT had somehow planned this all along as part of his recruiting of Allen seems pretty rediculous to me.

I remember the endless debates prior to 2008 and so many on this board ready to burn down Tedford's home because he clearly had a man-crush on Longshore, that Riley wasn't being treated fairly and would NEVER get a fair look - and then announced Riley had won the starting job.

His judgement may not be right 100% of the time, but I certainly don't believe he deliberately sits guys he is certain would help the team win more games in favor of guys he is certain can't cut the mustard.

Bruce Snyder once said, "The most important guy on the team is the QB. Second most important guy is the backup QB." Important here. JT seems to think this is not important or has just not been able to develop an adequate backup lately. I fully believe the talent is there. This could come to haunt.

We (myself included) go around and around with this... What is more to blame, evaluation or development? Obviously it is some combo of both, but which primarily?
