The ironic thing is that Shaq committed to UW for Tosh ... and chances are he'll never work with him at all at the safety position. in the long run i think that lupoi damaged his career. he would have again brought in a great recruiting class and have been named one of the top recruiters of the year. he could have stayed and continued to build his reputation and i actually think it would have resulted in him getting a much bigger contract later on either from us or from someone else. its a matter of building your reputation and he damaged his. i think that this move catches up to him

He made more money but he made a lateral move. At least Orgeron leveraged his reputation into a head coaching gig at an SEC school, even if it was only for a few years.

The fact that Cal Athletics couldn't, nay WOULDN'T, compete for such a valuable employee despite having all the competitive advantages stacked in its favor says volumes about how much effort, or lack thereof, Sandy is willing to make to push football forward. If she had simply been willing to pony up a couple hundred grand, we could have had a top 5, perhaps even #1 recruiting class.

As far as the "how dare Tosh leave Cal" attitude, well you can flip that on its head and ask, "how dare Cal attempt to squeeze hundreds of thousands of dollars out from a hard working employee's market value"? It goes both ways. In this day and age, you'd better pay your employees what they're worth or at least something close to it, or commit yourself to running a business that doesn't compete with firms that do.
