I don't get the whole "this was such a huge deal there's no way he wouldn't go to Tedford beforehand" argument in regards to injurygate. EVERYONE was doing this. EVERYONE. It was more or less an accepted method to trying to slow down Oregon's offense that pretty much every other school used. Cal was the only one stupid enough to get caught red handed.

That said...I still think its on Tedford to take ownership over the football program and state something like, "I'm the head coach its my responsibility to look over every aspect of the program, and it is my fault if something like this happens."

~MrGPAC

southseasbear;680398 said:

Risk his job? Are you suggesting that JT is so highly principled that he would fire an assistant coach who signals a player to feign injury? If so, why would you believe that JT instigated the act and then avoided responsibility?

No, I'm suggesting that if I were a third-year position coach who was secretly planning a significant strategy to deal with a big-game opponent's key strength -- let alone a strategy that some people would consider cheating -- without ever mentioning it to the head coach during our many game-plan meetings, I'd have some concern that it could get me fired.

AI'm not sure silver or tepper (who, I believe, was gone by then) really know anything. And the primary complaint by players may be the fact that the discipline was public (this could still be seen as 'throwing someone under the bus'), not that it was somehow Tedfords idea.

I can't think of a single example of Tedford acting unethical/dirty on that scale (please enlighten if you got one), while, as I've said, we now know that Tosh is someone who is willing to grab any advantage regardless of the public perception (which, in and of itself, isn'tnecessarily bad) it brings.

This is the guy who had JJ take a knee with the rose bowl on the line. Please..

SadbutTrue999;681332 said:

I'm not sure silver or tepper (who, I believe, was gone by then) really know anything.

I realize you *want* that to be true, but the liklihood of JT not being behind it is vanishingly small. Edwards was a member of the team then. Tepper was just one-year removed from his playing days with many friends still on the team. And Silver is a big-time NFL columnist -- experienced in reporting what he has confirmed and distinguising what he can only surmise. He has a reputation to protect too and has no history of bashing Cal or Tedford (and, in fact, has a long history of promoting Cal at every opportunity). Since Silver's statement is unequivocal, that alone is great evidence that JT was behind the scheme. There are lots of reasons to believe that they are telling the truth and none to think that they are lying. Do you *really* think Tedford wasn't behind the scheme or are you simply trying to maintain plausible deniability?

Just. Don't. Know.

In the absence of information, people fill in the blanks based on their biases. I honestly don't know what happened, other than I totally agree that the program should have addressed it as a whole, rather than scapegoating Tosh. (I find it impossible to believe it was 100% Tosh. That's my own bias).

I think everyone knew, and it only became a big issue because someone talked about it with the media, and our Chancellor thought that it offended his sense of honor. I still don't know whose idea it was that Lupoi take the blame because I heard that both Tedford and Sandy were against anyone taking the blame.

The point being that, if he had an issue with it, he should have addressed it internally instead of holding a grudge and screwing his alma mater.
