Just take care of Gould and coach M, and don't overpay the others. Really hope they don't make a dumb decision.

Their salary info is public, the Bay Area is expensive and the TV money coming in well known. SB should also know exactly what the chancellor believes about IAD spending deficits - it's not new and not changing due to the politics at UC now.

By the way, this is somewhat how UW stole the weasel from CU. Lots of money yes, but they also struck quickly, knowing that large public university are bureaucracies that move slowly. Giving someone a take it or leave it offer makes it impossible for the another large bureaucracy to match..... unless the athletic department has already planned out how to counter as a contingency. CU was especially hindered by a state law that prevented multi-year contracts for state employees, so that was easy pickings for UW.

It's both. Birgeneau is saying that Sandy has a budget and she has to live with it. Cool, I can respect that. But any department should be able to go to the chancellor and make a special request when they see either they can gain something of value or they could lose something of value and they need money outside the budget to cover. Sandy either went to him and he said no or she didn't go to him because she knew what the answer would be.

If Birgeneau decided to cover it, Sandy would have said yes and Tedford would have said yes. Any school that is serious about football would have covered this and worked it out later. Point being, there is no leeway whatsoever for the athletic department or the football program.

What would naming rights to Memorial garner per year? How about Autozone California Memorial Stadium? A leak suggesting that was on the table might light a rocket underneath Birgeneau and give FB more of their TV money.

We are damned lucky we got the high performance center project to a point where it had pretty much unstoppable momentum before the economy tanked. I think if the issue came up now we would have been living with the crap facilities we had for the rest of our lifetimes.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
This really is about AD economics.

Can Cal afford to pay all of its assistants significantly more money? (Paying one of them a significantly larger sum is not realistic)

Do we continue to support 27 sports? We saw what happened this past year with attempts to trim some budgetary excess the past year. We want our cake and to eat it to. The chancellor has appropriately said that the AD must carry its own weight financially. At some point there needs to be a hard stop. In the current political climate, I don't think there is room for him to make exceptions - he has already put forth significant University resources for SAHPC and CMS.

On the positive side, we are moving towards being financially sustainable as a department and we are getting the needed capitol investments in the department that should lead to a better margin down the road.

I think there will be good candidates to draw upon to fill those positions. Better still, we have a very good product to sell to student-athletes. As a program, we are like the company that cannot match top salary paying programs and we will struggle when the battle is solely about financial investments. That doesn't always win out in recruiting though and it doesn't always win out on the gridiron.

The bottom lines are these:

Female sports all get a pass on being self-supporting because of Title IX. Until that law is changed, there's no choice.

Since all female sports get a pass, all male sports have to be forced to be self-supporting through donations, as golf, rugby and crew (I think) are. The TV money is going to have to go primarily to football and basketball, if we want to be competitive in those two sports. Small donors should probably be encouraged to donate to the smaller sports, leaving the ESP money and the TV money to support the two major sports.

That's a good point about the SAHPC getting going just before the economy died.

And that's a good point about spending an extra $1M or so to save a recruiting staff that was simply rolling.

And that's a good point about Birgeneau putting his foot down on the budget. Like, I get it. They nearly killed baseball, rugby, etc., and now you want to increase the AD budget because of Tosh? Give me a break.

Which all leads to MY point. Tedford could have re-allocated HIS salary to cover the asst coach disparity!
Alas, I suppose he'd rather keep HIS dough and go it alone. Fine. Think you can keep the ball rolling? Fine. Try. But if not, it all comes back to you, JT. If you could have given on your salary to build the team, but didn't.... well, then, we know where your priorities are, and that would be bye bye time.

Next thing you know, JT is going to TAKE that NFL job.... "I don't need this **** - I'll take my salary and pride, too!"

Then everyone will be looking at Birgeneau again.

Birgenau is a p*ssy elitist @sshole, just like the chancellors before him. Nothing's changed. Meanwhile, for all their talk about academics, our academic reputation continues to sink while schools like SC who invest in football are catching up.

Yet the little twerps like Birgenau are too caught up in their childhood issues with the high school jock to let go of their pathetic view of academic elitism, no matter how much it costs the university.

This university is run by a bunch of losers.

Can someone refresh my memory as to why the new TV contract isn't making any difference in our ability to do anything here? Under the old contract we were making $3 million a year and now it's $17 M a year. WTF? Even if our AD deficit was $8 million , STILL WTF?

Then add in what the other assistants will get in raises and Tedford is the lowest paid guy on the staff, assuming he's getting paid at all.

It's a false economy. Washington understands that you have to spend money to make money. There is a difference between a team that has a #5 recruiting class and one that has a #28 recruiting class. And, if the hand is played well, that can translate into millions. I'm still thinking that Tedford and Barbour are thinking that the CMS and the construction of the SAHPC compensate for Lupoi's efforts, making the latter premise moot. I, however, do not share that point of view...not completely.

I haven't read all the posts so forgive me if I've repeated somebody else's opinion.

I'm wondering if it's even a possibility for Tedford to pay assistants out of his own salary.

One huge savings for any non-revenue/non-fully endowed sport--mandate that all scholarships must be for California in-state tuition or its equivalent. While Title IX mandates that Cal must give equal opportunities to women to participate in sports, it does not mandate that those opportunities have to go to out of state recruits. Field the best field hockey team using California recruits that you can--and really, I think that the educational/athletic opportunity should go to California kids. Should save money on recruiting too.

Revenue sports are a different animal. They are the engine that drives the whole train so they need to bring in the best recruits possible (though the bias should be toward California recruits too).

Asking Tedford to take from his salary and give to Tosh/Kiesau is absolutely absurd! Who of us would do this?

I recall distinctly Tedford asking the AD for extra money for his assistants not just once, but several times. He has always attempted to take care of assistants, but if the money is not there, it is not there!

We are just recovering from a severe recession and the unemployed number around 8.5% nationwide and more than that in California. The State has cut Cal's budget and we've gone to enrolling out of state kids in order to make up the shortfall. Out-of-state undergrads now number around 10% of the campus. That's how desparate we have been. If you've followed the recent Regent's meetings you'll know this was a last straw and a real defeat for the promise made by Pat Brown over 50 years ago.

At the moment, we can't compete with the money that Washington is throwing around. Sarkisian is in trouble, unless he delivers a winning season and a prominent bowl appearance. The best thing that could happen to him and to Washington is for all this money to be paid to assistants and the team wallow at .500. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy!
