I'm not sure any of the choices are quite right. I would have stayed for less money...but I don't expect others to be held to that standard. What I *do* expect from him is to be classy about moving on and NOT go to highly touted recruits and try to flip them from Cal to UW. That is the only thing that smells really really really really badly about this situation.

~MrGPAC
Turn down that kind of money and he's in line to move up the Cal coaching ladder... maybe take over as Head Coach some day. Along the way he's got another great line to give potential recruits, especially ones that we're competing with Washington for.

Instead he takes huge bucks now, but won't look nearly so good trying to sell bad weather and a mediocre education.
Cal people know Washington is a good school. OTOH, it is okay to make fun of ASU which is a 50,000 kid JC. This is an unhappy board, and it is taking some cheap shots at Washington.
Tosh made a reasonable decision to take the UW job. He was offered a lot. It may backfire as the UW coaching staff sounds unstable (both mentally and otherwise). It is a big risk.

But he showed himself to be sleazy. He should have left the recruits alone (despite how he bonded with them), expressed his confidence in the Cal program and publically thanked Cal for giving him the opportunity to receive such a generous offer.

I'm probably one of the few people who would've stayed. Loyalty is one of the highest things I value. Now, if my contract had run out, then we can talk...

Just curious, and hope this is a good way to consolidate the aggregate thought of the greater Cal nation here.

I would have given notice to JT before telling recruits. I would publicly thank Cal for the opportunity--even if I was shafted on injury-gate.
1. If I went to my employer asking them to match an offer and they did match it, I would stay at that job; I would not go back to the other company and shop their match.
2. If I knew I was looking for a payday I'd say so then take the highest offer, but do it in an honorable way. For example, a condition of accepting the new job would be no recruiting the same kids.
3. Under no circumstance would ever I f*ck over my alma mater.

I agree with short term vs long term thinking.

I think that Tosh's chances were good that he'd end up as DC if he stayed a couple more years. If not here, then somewhere else. He would've seen a pay bump of some sort, even at Cal.

I also think that in that short period (<3 years) Cal will inevitably raise salaries substantially. I think they will have to in order to be a viable program.

The money Sark offered is great but what should be more important is the opportunity. Is UW that great of an opportunity? I would've picked a better program even if it meant $100-200k less.

With that said, the guy's been here his whole life. In some ways it'll be good for him to experience something new. New team, new school, new place. He'll learn some life lessons in the process and come out, hopefully, more mature. Perhaps he'll realize the mistakes he made in burning JT and the Cal DL.

Also, I think Tosh had a chance (in time) to really become something in the annals of Cal history (I'm talking statues and plaques) but I think that has been thrown out the window.
Sounding more and more like this was akin to Jerry Jones vs Jimmy Johnson, post Super Bowl 1995. Except there wasn't a battle of two egos, just the one of a bitter man.

In the end I trust our commits are smart and will see this for what it is; Treggs just did

#CALgang

Gorcey was reporting that they were making plans for him to take over DC and the Clancy might've left.

Okanes said that his hunch is that Clancy wants to return to the NFL some day where he's spent much of his professional career.

I think that DC spot could be opening up in the next couple of years.
He had an offer to double his pay and stay. He accepted it. Then, snuck off like a thief in the night.

"...we've already established that, my dear, now it is just a matter of price."

jabes,

neat article from the portland tribune. Everyone here should read it. Tosh should read it. If he behaved like his counterpart I think we would all be happy for him.

from that aricle...on whether Heyward would try to recruit his OSU recruits
"No, I won't", he said, "That would be unethical. No"
A couple of years ago Tosh was a GA making what, $20K a year? He had a couple of great years as a coach and recruiter. Now he is making mid 6 figures (welcome to the 1%). Not bad for a young kid at his second job (that isn't in silicon valley). He had no business getting bumped up to DC at Cal and it would be a bigger joke to say he had any shot of becoming Cal's HC anytime soon. Coaching college football is a risky business and you have to look out for yourself. Best of luck to him.
Get a clue. Honest Men don't send emails in lieu and leave friends standing at the airport waiting on a pre-arranged trip.

It's not really a diffucult thing to figure out. Would he leave his Mother or brother standing at some airport and send an email that he's moving and won't be picking them up as agreed? Coach Tosh shouldn't expect players, other coaches, recruits and parents to look him in the eyes and express "commitment".

I sincerely believe this is a blemish on his character that he will remember the rest of his life. I don't know if he will regret it. Money can cause people to imagine a lot of things.

Good luck and thanks to him for giving to Cal. I wish him well---in a Sicilian way, of course.
