I can think of a couple of things that could raise issues that could be successfully litigated in this whole TL mess. I'm not an attorney, but would be interested in comments from those who are.

1. Before TL resigned, he was apparently recruiting for the mutts. Until he actually submits his resignation, isn't he legally obligated to recruit only for Cal? When he recruits for UW while in the employ of Cal, he is breaching his contract with Cal, and Cal could press a claim for damages. The damages could include the value of the loss of the commitment of certain recruits. It would be a most interesting exercise to try to assign a value, but I imagine the value could easily add up to the difference in salary he is making from taking the new job.

2. Because he was working for UW before he stopped working for Cal, does Cal have a claim against UW for tortious interference with a business relationship? I imagine the damages from such a suit could eat into the new TV revenue UW is using to pay the poached coaches.

I'm not saying Cal would actually pursue such action, but I am wondering if these are reasonable theories?

But I'd guess this sort of thing happens often.

In my opinion these could be valid causes of action. And while the Pac 12 couldn't prevent Cal from suing anyone, whatever conference agreement Cal and UW are parties to may contain some sort of arbitration or mediation clause that keeps the dispute out of court (and out of the public eye).
