no question, these guys are proven, productive, and nfl experinced as players and coaches. Better fitting for who we are at the very top of the food chain in my opinion. So we take a hit in the short term, rather build this way than a house of twitter cards. A top 15,top 19 class, I will take it gladly, it will be 100% pure blue and gold stock of student athlete. Bring only those players here please! The rest can go to wherever else they desire. Go Bears!!!!

We're are already better with these new coaches. Players should be pumped. LOI days will also be great for the team. 224 days until Cal vs. Nevada!

Congratulations, Jeff Tedford, and thank you for a job well done. Wes Chandler and Todd Howard are outstanding hires, and I somehow wish I could remember the names of the coaches they are replacing. As I believe MB and others have noted, head coaches keep lists and stay prepared to find replacements in the event they lose assistants from their staffs. It is clear that Tedford has met this challenge that comes with being a head coach. Tedford is due high praise and congratulations, and I believe Chandler and Howard will bring outstanding results. They will find a wealth of talent waiting for them at Cal, ready to be coached, and a re-built stadium and awesome facilities in which to work. On a clear day, you can see forever from Memorial Stadium. I can't wait for kickoff 2012!

Could it be that the new, improved facilities attract not only players but coaches too?

To borrow from a Bruce Snyder line - with these hires we're all steak and no sizzle.

So many of the recent hires have been former pro players and coaches, it can't be an accident.

I think it is clear the direction the program is taking and the sales pitch we're going to give to recruits: world class education, top notch facilities, premier location, top conference and a staff that is uniquely qualified to prepare you to play at the next level.

Time will tell if this is an effective strategy - some kids are obviously going to be swayed by sales pitches of people that play Xbox. But ultimately I like this direction as it appears to be fundamentally grounded in substance over style, something that seems consistent with the Cal's mission. I hope the message resonates and we don't see a drop off in recuiting. But if we miss out on some 5 star recruits but deliver on the field and kids graduate, then I still like it.

I spoke to one of the younger players about the new hire and he is definitely excited about the prospect of learning from Howard. He's a DL and very confident things will improve and we won't see a drop off of any kind next year.

Pretty good hires. Applying lessons learned...should all the coaches get a small bump in salary AND the addition of a clause that allows leaving for a conference foe only with a payment? If other schools continue to throw money around we need a poison pill to control things. Also some sort of escalation the closer they get to LOI day. In other words if COACH leaves 1st week of January then he has to pay X and if he leaves the 2nd week in January he pays 2X. Similar constraints for other milestone dates.

What good strength and conditioning coach would have come with our old facilities. There is little question in my mind of the difference Blasquez has made, just wait until next year when we actually use the facilities!

But, uhh, I was wondering what Tedford's thinking was when he hired Todd Howard. Remember he was the defensive line coach at Wazzu, and he was out of work as their new coach didn't retain todd babes.

Cal had its second best rushing total (292) against Wazzu's DL (and this includes the Blue Hose game). Cal's best rushing total (296) was against the Beavers and that was only by 4 extra yards. Only two other teams, ASU and the Blue Hose, allowed Cal more than 200 yards rushing (247 and 285, respectively). So, Howard's DL didn't do that well against Cal's anemic running game. I can only assume that Todd babes' real advantage is that he has solid recruiting ins into the LA area, at least I hope so. I'm just wondering before I go goo goo and declare Tedford's new hires an upgrade.

But when he coached at UCLA their front gave up an average of 90 yrds pre game. Both teams saw an improvement under Coach Howard, and their respective fans both wish he wasn't fired or let go.

and I feel honored to have BB 10,000 post in a thread I started

I'd stop way short of calling these outstanding/excellent hires. Chandler was coaching in the UFL while Howard was laid off of Wazzu's staff. They are solid though coaching wise, the staff will collectively need to pick up the recruiting effort with Lupoi gone or start winning.

Okay, I can buy that he can coach up talent or at least utilize player talents effectively when available.

Leach brought-in his own staff, which was finalized on the 13th of Jan. Todd has been out of work a little over a week...

During some down years for UCLA, he recruited quite well for them and more importantly, their run D was stingy.

Kudos to JT and staff.

>"---Do you question that Wes and Todd are upgrades as coaches over Eric and To$h?
On paper, they look clearly better than their predecessors.
We can't compare recruiting skills as yet and maybe not until next year.---"<

No. The comment was in regard to Coach Todd, not Coach Chandler. I questioned the fan's exuberance and wondered about the objective of the hire. Was it based on a need to move expeditiously or fill a critical need or both? With all due respect to the Coach, I think it will be a year or two before we find out if this was indeed a "big hire".

So just do it. Go Bears!

Oh I understand that Leach brought in his own staff....this however doesn't address my concern. I mean, Leach brought in defensive-minded 'zona's DL coach Salave'a and didn't keep Todd babes, which would seem to be a positive thing to do if Todd babes was doing the bang up job as others here say and believe he has.

But its just position coaches and they arent going to be make or break guys anyway. So I still think their good, just not blown away.

In my dream world, Jerry Rice would have been a GREAT hire! lol

What are JR's coaching credentials?
I really liked him as a player; but as a coach??????

I have a lot of respect for JR as a player. But a great player does not always make a great coach. So to argue he could potentially be a bust as a position coach is besides the point because I think if we had a shot, a person of his stature would be a gamble anyway and only time would tell if he pans out or not.
