coach genryk's strategy of rugby style punts created several near blocks this season and can also potentially throw the punter off their rhythm (just like a golfer who starts playing punch shots on a windy day)

anyone notice that anger punted 3 times at the shrine game for a 60 yard average? and on one punt the returner lost 4 yards

hopefully next season genryk will allow incoming strong legged, near genius cole leininger to simply kick the ball as far and as high as he can down field

another goal for coach genryk should be to identify a pr this spring who can catch every ball (except those within the 10 yard line) instead of fair catching them or worse, letting them bounce for another 10-15 yards

marv is an exellent wr but the bears would have picked up hundreds of yards of field postion during the season if ka had been the primary pr

from a gameday strategy perspective, my biggest concerns heading into next season concern our special teams

i wouldn't call it our biggest concern. If I'm not mistaken, I don't think ST made us lose any game last year but there are areas that need to be looked at.

Not sure having KA return punts would have made that big a difference, but he might get the chance next year.
OTOH, I absolutely despise the rugby punt and feel just as you do in that it affected Angers punting. Maybe Genyk had a reason (questionable coverage ability?) but it wasn't obvious. I also hate the 3 upback blocking scheme on punts since the free rushers blast right into it and pushed them back into Anger. I'm amazed that more punts didn't hit his blocker's butts as he tried to get them off.
I also see the blocking on x-tra points as being spotty. Tavecchio took the heat on the missed PAT's but at least 3 of them had no chance of getting off regardless of who was kicking them as the defense was right on top of the kick since the line-blocking broke down badly.

Genyk's ST has performed worse than Alamar's. Ouch.

STs to succeed. We have had two good recruiting classes with another on the way, this should give us some talent to be coached on STs...IMO

Genyks PR strategy:

When they kick it in the air, do something footbally

1. rugby kicks marginalizing the punter's big leg
2. extra point fails time after time
3. PR catches inside the 10, failing to catch on the fly on others
4. short kickoffs
5. long returns for them
6. short returns for us - none to the house either on PR or KR this season - oops, I forgot, 1 v. Presbyterian by Bigs. Does that count because it's Presby? But we had a blocked kick in the same game.

Anything else?

If you didn't know anything about football you would think Cal had an awful punter. I died a little bit inside every time I saw Anger put it rugby style
