From ProFootballTalk.com

Quote:

Oregon had already replaced Chip Kelly when he changed his mind

Michael Berk of KGW, who broke the news that a deal was close, recently told WDAE radio in Tampa (via JoeBucsFan.com) that Kelly indeed had accepted the job and that Oregon had given Kelly's title to offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich.

So Kelly had to actually get his job back, after he had a change of heart.

:rollinglaugh:

That's GOT to make for some fun coaches' meetings next year.

Coach Kelly: "All right coaches, let's get ready for a big season in 2012!! Everybody fired up?!"

Offensive Coordinator Mark Helfrich: [Grumble Grumble]

Coach Kelly: "What was that, Mark?"

Mark Helfrich: [Inaudible]

Poor Coach Helfrich, he was head coach of Oregon about as long as we were #1 in the nation before Riley decided to scramble against OSU. :p

But seriously, two observations:

(1) I was truly surprised that UofKnight decided to avoid the "celebrity chef" route - i.e. Boise's Peterson - for some home-cooking. I guess they value continuity within their system (like Furd and SC did) over a big name hire that could lure top recruits. Not sure it would pay off for them in the long term like it did for SC...Stanford's imminent fall is a more apt comparison.

(2) Most definitely, Chip Kelly is gone next year after another NFL team gets more desperate and cedes more control and money to him. Remember Pete Carroll had a dalliance with the Dolphins a season before he left for the Sea-Chickens. I think if Huizenga had offered Carroll a better deal, he might have left on the spot. Same for the Bucs and Chipper.

All it takes is a restless fanbase and another dismal performance in the eyes of an owner before they really turn the franchise over to someone like Kelly. I could easily see Jerry Jones and the Cowgirls getting that desperate, if they bomb out of next season.

Chipper has shown his true heart lies in the NFL - it's only a matter of time.

Things that make you go hmmm....right Shaq?

After what we went through, I am not going to take any pleasure from any instability at Oregon or Rutgers. The only instability that will have me laughing will be the one coming up in Washington.

That's okay, I can laugh for both of us.

And the Leghumpers aren't blocking our path to the Rose Bowl (even with coach Loopy). We could have easily beaten them last year with a QB not named Zach Maynard.

But the Floats most certainly are.

Chip Kelly's impending move to the NFL will have a far more significant impact on our long term success than Tosh's leaving -- bank it.

However, I hold no grudge against Kelly. He is just a damn fine coach, and he is finding ways to exploit the rules to have a high-powered offense. I would rather us coach and execute better to beat Oregon than wish any harm to their program.

Nobody I talk to believes the report that Helfrich had already been promoted, but even if he had... It's obvious you don't know much about the Oregon staff if you think things will be awkward between Helfrich and Kelly. Helfrich was having a mediocre run at Colorado when Kelly invited him to come home to Oregon, and they've had a collaborative working relationship running the offense ever since. And Helfrich personally is very laid back and easy-going, and unlikely to be phazed by this if true. It's also far from a given that CK tries to jump for the league the next chance he gets.

BellottiBold: "It's also far from a given that CK tries to jump for the league the next chance he gets."

What does "far from a given" mean? Sounds like double talk for "Who knows, he might."

Probably would've been an interim coach.

There's a lot of chatter suggesting a positive response from recruits to Chip's brutal honesty in their living rooms.

And that said, saying that he can't promise he'll be coaching at Oregon in 5 years doesn't mean that he won't be coaching at Oregon in 5 years... it means he's not comfortable making promises that he doesn't know he'll be able to keep. It means he has made no decision one way or the other.

Of course, they might be forced to leave because of circumstances beyond their control.

Chip is obviously NOT comfortable where he is.
He is more likely than, for example, Tedford, to leave very soon.

If JT were to say to a kid, "I am at Cal for the long haul." Disagree. If CK were to tell a kid he'd be in Eugene for the "long haul" it would actually be quite credible on the heels of him turning down a ridiculous offer to jump to the NFL.

And you have no way of knowing how happy/satisfied he is in his current situation.

If CK were to tell a kid he'd be in Eugene for the "long haul" it would actually be quite credible on the heels of him turning down a ridiculous offer to jump to the NFL.

And you have no way of knowing how happy/satisfied he is in his current situation.

No one knows what is in a person's heart of hearts -- Exhibit A = To$h Lupoi.
But I can look at someone's actions and come to a conclusion.
"Res Ipsa Loquitur"

the other thing that might point to him staying for a while is his history as the Offensive Coordinator at the Univ. of New Hampshire which was his alma mater. His fast attack spread offenses racked up rushing records and blowout wins year after year which predictably had other programs interested in him. Reportedly he listened to but ultimately turned down many other "better" jobs (HC title, more money, etc.) to remain the OC at UNH where he coached from 1994-2006.

to me he's always seemed like a football junkie living his dream. Theres a longtime girlfriend, but he has never married or had a kid. I've never heard of him having a hobby. Though the 3 mil he's making annually isn't chump change especially in Eugene, he again has turned down a huge raise to stay put. The Ducks have a very stable group of assistant coaches many who have been at UO for over a decade. Of course the actual football facilities are 2nd to none. Eugene's rain doesn't fall inside the indoor practice field or likely bother a New Hampshire native much. It's a pretty good gig for a football junkie

I have a theory that head coaches who wear visors are douches. See Chip, Lane and Sark...
