Personally I think "before-To$h" and "after-To$h" is overblown. At the AA game, the recruits were riding the wave of momentum and good Cal vibes. To$h leaving just briefly interrupted the "all is swell in Berkeley" force field long enough for some natural buyer's remorse to creep in sooner rather than later. <br /><br />Backto$hed or not, the rest of the Pac-12 was not going to sit idle while we reaped a top 10 or top 5 recruiting class. It certainly didn't help the cause, but considering that UW hasn't reaped any direct benefits (yet), we can acknowledge that the rest of the Pac-12 were waiting like vultures to blow up our class as well. Everybody is always gunning for numero uno.<br /><br />It's too bad if some of the recruits on the fence decide not to sign with Cal, but I refuse to flip out like some on here are doing. The hyperventilation is almost comical. I'm going to roll with those who want to be here, which will still be a highly talented bunch and I think we will continue to improve as the seasons come on.<br /><br />If JT still can't get it done in the next few seasons, then there will be few excuses left for being middle of the pack, but I think JT and the program have handled this mini-crisis with relative aplomb, considering the direct assault on the recruits (WR and DL) who were initially the strength of our recruiting class.

first, "losses"<br />two so-so coaches, great recruiter and so-so recruiter<br />second, Gains<br />two highly experienced coaches, good to great recruiters<br /><br />Advantage: Cal<br /><br />A solid class that could improve, especially if all the "soft verbals" think rationally.<br />Chris Conte showed that "de-commits" sometimes wake up.

At least one kid would actually be enrolled at Cal right now. Some of the kids were publicly committed to Cal. With the exception of McCarthy who was a soft commit all the rest would have been Bears. It is probable the momentum of those kids signing would have resulted in some extremely nice surprises that none of us were really aware of. There is no way to understate the degree to which To$h fucked us over.

To$h f*cked us on some good recruits but mostly on the defensive side of the ball so it's not going to make a huge impact when all is said in done. Most of our offensive commits will likely stick with us which is the good side to all of this. <br /><br />Time to move on from To$h. What's done is done.

Regardless of the outcome on LOI day, nothing much will change next year on the offensive side with Maynard as the QB. The defensive side could be lessened slightly if Shaq drifts away. Otherwise, looks to be about the same prognosis as last year.

Our defense will be better next year so let's hope we shut out some teams so our 10 points can win the game.....:p

I have to say...this is pretty embarrassing if you're Tedford. Chip Kelly tells a recruit that he may not be around for 4 years, and the recruit still ends up at Oregon. Tedford loses an assistant coach, and many of our top recruits jump ship or at the very least, strongly reconsider their commitment to Cal. Can anyone recall this much impact on recruiting with the departure of an assistant coach? What about head coaches?

Not bad. Not great. But a good showing. We could be Sark ;-)<br /><br />C) So in many ways after the HS All-star game we were "hitting above our weight" - putting together the POSSIBILITY of a monster class. But that is just outside the norm. Few programs without multiple BCS bids do that. MANY of the kids that are rated 4 and 5 stars believe, INCORRECTLY, that they are locks for the NFL. MANY believe that what they need to do is get through the NFL imposed time in school until they will get their GUARANTEED (snicker) multi-gizzillion dollar pay day. So they go to a school where they can do this while "winning". <br /><br />D) The bottom line - Rome was NOT built in a day. Like many of the negas I too am frustrated by Tedford - especially his lack of risk taking in play calling, game planning and player development. I have even used the word "coward". But far more important than one monster class is continuing to improve the W-L record, improving graduation rates, and leveraging the multi-hundred million dollar investment in facilities over a sustained period of time.

We're still going to end up with top 25 class because yes, there might be 2 or 3 de-commits before signing day, not counting the recent de-commits Ellis McCarthy, Zach Hoffpauir. Will likely gain a couple 2 or 3 star recruits by LOI. If Tosh stayed, we had the potential to get a top 5 class but a lock at top 10. Shaq might be headed to Oregon, Payton and Walker maybe to UW, Dozier, no, if he did, he would go to WSU because he wants to play WR not DB where Sark wants to play him.

So, POSSIBLY the "big hits" happened on the defensive line and safety. <br /><br />The Bears do have a ton of talent on the current roster on the defensive line. Could be some superstars there if coached up by Howard. Conte, under Pendy, turned into a first team Pac 10 performer at safety as a 3 star recruit. All is not lost. <br /><br />The big news is getting Kline, who some say is special. A position that is most responsible for success in the college game, in my opinion. In addition, if the team lands Treggs, Lawler, and Powe there is some serious firepower in addition to the potential from the running backs on the roster. O-Line recruits are solid.:gobears:

Win on the field in 2012, say 10 -2 in the regular season, and The Pantheon goes up quickly. That is the solution, win. There are plenty of 4 and 5-star guys looking at Cal for 2013. The 2012 class is important, but it's not the end of the world if it's not top 5. Win games + SAHPC + Memorial + Cal = even bigger things in 2013. Lose games and it's anyone's guess.

Anyway, with AA announcing Oregon yesterday, the speculation seems to be that Shaq may follow him there. If that were to happen, wouldn't that be ironic for Washington? They hire Lupoi to catch up to Oregon, but it backfires, and Oregon ends up with a couple of 5 star recruits that were once seemingly headed towards Cal.

And doubly ironic if Oregon goes on sanctions and loses out on bowl games in 2 of the next 3 years, while Kelly rides off into the NFL sunset. It could happen.

At this point lets wait until signing day and see how the dust settles. We can work ourselves into a frenzy about what might have been at that point. Only a little more than a day away.

Basically, we lost all of our 5-star recruits, but may gain a few 2-3 stars.
