You know that we are a Public University and most of the sports programs in CAL are backed by the state and you know how tight the budget is in California. We aren't a BIG private school like Stanford or USC or a BIG UC Campus like UCLA which is more like a research school for medical, law and more that can maintain that many sports programs. If not for a fundraiser, CAL Baseball team would be gone but they luckily raised enough money and made the College World Series.

The athletic department borrowed a LOT of money from the University's General Fund years ago. The Chancellor's been asking for the money back rather nicely, so.... We're paying our debts.

The money was spent so that the other non-revenue sports would not have to raise money like the baseball team did last year. And you can pretty much expect that all extra money from next year's P12 football contract will be spent the same way. Sorry, but it's a seriously stupid decision by Sandy.

This is the kind of thread that drives me batty.

We KNOW where the money went. To support MENS non revenue sports. We HAVE to maintain a certain number of womens programs to maintain our title IX compliance. However, other Pac-12 schools have long made a decision that they will not starve football (and basketball) to maintain 29 sports.

You can look at the list, starting with Tennis, Golf, T&F, Swimming, Cross Country, Gymnastics and Crew. If they are not fully endowed (or the Pac-12 is requiring them), they are targets for elimination _IF_ you are serious about engaging in the football arms race.

And to once again get on my high horse on this, I personally believe they should be. MANY (most?) of the athletes that are playing Golf, for example, at the D1 level come from backgrounds where they could easily pay their own way. Their 'success on the links" translates into really NOTHING to adding to the overall college experience for other students. Yet their endeavors are paid for by the work, sacrifice, and injuries of kids playing revenue sports.

The money exists in the tennis world to endow college tennis programs.

Furthermore, although Cal has a great tennis tradition going back many decades (Helen Wills Moody won US, Wimbledon and Olympics), the fact is today the best tennis players don't go to college. Thus, the college game has diminished in status.

Golf may also fall into this category.

Track and Field simply is not as popular today as in the past. Back in the 1970's, Cal won the NCAA track champion and Eddie Hart won an Olympic gold metal. Let's include Brian Maxwell in that era as well.

USA-USSR track meets sold out at Edwards.

But times have changed. The income potential in sports such as football and baskettball has diverted talent away from track.

So while Cal should be commended for having many varsity sports, the economic reality is that the major revenue-producing sports should receive spending priority (e.g. assistant coach salaries) while other sports must secure outside funding to cover at least some of their expenses.

As far as I can see, thanks to Uncle Phil, among others, Pac-12 football has become an arms race, just like the SEC. The more money that is raised for football, the more money that will be spent on football. That's it. All the other sports will ultimately be forced to fend for themselves.

Football last year provided about 5 - 7 million in profit to pay for all of the other sports. If we paid the salaries of the assistants like Washington, that would drain away another 1.5 million - each year. Not just a one time jolt, which could have been fine. However, we needed to keep the softball team so we decided to not raise everyones salary.

Fact is that 6 million per year leaves the department in about a 12 - 20 million annual deficit, which means that we need to raise an additional 7 - 15 million in revenue per year. We could do that by getting the other sports endowed, or by raising donation levels to double the current bear backer amounts, or by raising ticket prices.

So - in other words, it is up to the fans to provide. So until you double your bear backer donation this year, please stop complaining about who we should have invested more in this or that.

Jeff 82 is correct. Football money is growing, while at the same time the cost of keeping up is growing. We are spending more on recruiting, facilities, etc, and just treading water. WE are not going to be generating a ton of new revenue from the football program for the other sports. And we made a decision to keep those other sports last year. So...time to pay up, sports fans.

socaltownie;700160 said:

Jeff, which mens programs operate the most in the red?

Before their fundraising drive, baseball had the largest absolute deficit, as I recall. Gymnastics was also fairly high, I think. It should be pointed out that the fundraising drive for baseball did not solve their funding problem permanently, but only provided some years of breathing room.

The reality, IMHO, is that there is a battle coming within the alumni fanbase, between those who want to maintain the existing broad-based athletic program and compete in the Directors' Cup, and those who would prefer to join most of our peers, support football and basketball, and dump most other men's sports. When you don't have a Phil Knight to support the entire athletic budget, it's a problem.

Among other things, it says that Rugby lost money, which I suspect would be news to Jack Clark and his alumni minions. Based on that, I question this data, pending more information about where it came from.

It was a request for the justification of the 5 sports cuts in Fall 2009. There was a lot of debate over whether rugby lost money... bottom line is that IAD carries, I believe, $10-15 million of expenses just to run it and that has to be distributed across the sports.

Rugby raised money in response to the cuts and now is fully endowed though.

Not sure how long term the baseball funding and gymnastics funding will last if more fundraising isn't done.

But there is another problem - donors might shift money from general athletic to support their favored sports - which means no real net gain to IAD (in the case of rugby, IAD was going to lose money even due to lost donations IIRC). And donors SHOULD give to their sports of choice IMO instead of doing this trickle down effect where donations where one buys football tickets (maybe could say overpriced FB tickets)... if that is what they choose.

Yes there is money to be saved by cutting some of these men's sports (soccer looks like #1 worst offender now). But does it really make sense to cut sports that are 50-70% endowed to save money? Will it create more donor backlash? Or on the reverse end, does having a partial endowment really give a sport the right to exist and cost a bunch of money down the road?

My thoughts are that IAD is really waiting out for the actual arrival of the TV money while hoping ESP sells and isn't willing to stir up anything right now (from what I've read, the money jumps again once A) p12 network start up costs are paid off and B) after 2012-13 when third tier rights buyback are paid for). That means no cuts, and no raises for a few years. That might prove to be shortsided given the potential variability in ticket sales at the new CMS and how much they not only depend on success, but hope for future success (now dampered with the to$h defection).

As I noted above, Steve Desimone had an assistant he was sharing with a couple of other sports. When, as part of the AD cutbacks to meet the deficit, that position was going to be cut, golf donors stepped up to pay for it to be restored as a full-time slot just for golf, only to be told that administrative staff in the Olympic (i.e. non-revenue) sports had to be shared, and therefore the proposal wouldn't be accepted. At least, that's the way other golf donors explained it to me.

I agree with you that people shifting money from supporting IAD in general to only support specific sports might be a problem. The issue is accounting. IAD needs to make sure that the cost for each sport is fully-loaded, including all overhead. That may lead to debates about how many assistants Sandy needs, for example, but at least it makes the goal each sport has to meet clear.
