I just saw that tweet that he was joining our staff and then another comment on him being a strength coach. I'm assuming he's not replacing blasquez, so what role will be have here? Will he be working on conditioning our receivers?

It all seems pretty vague. What I've heard is he is on the strength and conditioning staff. Those guys are allowed to have some contact with players in the off-season (coaches aren't) so I would expect he will be working with Blazquez to define WR (maybe DB since this are similar) specific conditioning drills and such.

It would be nice to have some more concrete info. Hard to say if and even when we will, though, it's rare we get much insight into S&C staff, with the exception of Blazquez taking over that role for the football team last year.

When Blasquez was at DLS building their training program there was also a guy that was doing sprint training. I don't know all the details but I will say that every kid that I saw come in as a sluggish freshman gained significant speed by going through Blasquez's training and this sprint coach's training. It was pretty remarkable. If Collins and Blasquez have similar success at Cal we will be in good shape.

However, it appears that he has the ability to connect with the high school kids. Why not put him in a position to recruit? Who knows. However, it appears that he has great experience training WRs and, therefore, if he can help our WRs exceed even further, I am happy.

that said trainers couldn't recruit. Don't know if that is true but if it is we can't use Collins and he probably can't 'beat out' Chandler as WR coach. With that said Collins is on the staff and will have some contact, either direct or indirect, with recruits. I think the Collins hire was a good move by Tedford. At least a small bit of the new Pac 12 money is being used by Cal. We don't hire Collins without it.

If there is a time for us to replace one of our assistant coaches, I hope Tedford considers an elite recruiter at that position.

I can tell you that coaching is more important than recruiting. You obviously need both but you can't hire assistant coaches with questionable coaching ability just because they can recruit. It won't work, not in football. The best thing that could happen to Cal is that all the assistant coaches are awesome coaches. We would see the difference.

I do not dismiss coaching. I would love for us to keep Gould and Coach M as long as possible, and I also think Gould is an excellent recruiter. I also think Arroyo has the potential to be an excellent recruiter. At the end of the day, if we perform on the field and go to a BCS bowl game, the recruiting will get that much easier. However, in order to compete for Pac-12 championships, unless we have coaches who are just so much more innovative than others (like Kelley), just having good coaches will not get there. We need both great recruiters and great coaches.

Ya look at all the crazy talent UCLA and Notre Dame have amassed over the last decade. They both haven't done squat.

What I read on this board though is that many are willing to trade coaching for recruiting. That will never, ever work. Our coaches have to be coaches first and recruiters second. Plus, I think coaches who 'specialize' in recruiting and that are 'super recruiters' tend to be more salesmen than coaches. We just got our first taste of one of those guys. I'd rather not have them around. There is too much slime factor with these guys.

My understanding is that only coaches can recruit off campus and have direct contact with recruits over the phone. However, on official and unofficial visits, the staff can effectively "recruit" players since of course the player is going to want to meet blazquez as that's who he is going to be spending a lot of time in the gym with. However, the vast majority of the recruiting is done by coaches obviously, but there is a lot of staff helping out in organizing visits and contacts, etc.

The heart of the recruiting is done by the assistant coaches who have no limit on the number of times they can meet up with recruits. These relationships are built over a number of years. Of course having someone who can meet with recruits during official visits is great (i.e., the recruits can meet with professors, S&C staff, etc) but the relationship is built with the assistant coaches and are done through in-person visits and phone calls (well, now through twitter as well).

Not directly related, but Lawler cited Collins' hirings as one of the reasons why he chose to come to Cal. So we might in yet still benefit from recruiting with him on staff in some way through his previous connections made.

Then he would be on the coaching staff. Strength coaches can't recruit. I suspect that he would work with the WRs on doing the strength training and conditioning to succeed as WRs.

How do we know he isn't going to continue his outside work with high school kids? If so, even if he doesn't formally recruit for Cal during those sessions, that would inure to our benefit?

I think that gets a little too dicey. As an employee of Cal, wouldn't he be deemed a booster? What can he do or say about Cal at that point to potential recruits?

But if he continues his side gig and he doesn't talk Cal at all, it could still help us a great deal. Of course, I have no idea whether that is an option or if he is contemplating that. And have no way of finding out since I hate Boston Market
