I'm an avid lurker of these boards and have continuously checked in here throughout the recruiting period, however this is my first time ever posting on here. I'm sure this has already been discussed on these boards through and through, but I still can't understand the Daily Cal printing this lame excuse for an article about Cal Football the day we bring in a very solid recruiting class. It's hack writers like this guy Jack Wang that give our program the bad name.<br /><br /><a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="<a Wang:<br /><br />Are you #$%&ing kidding me Wang? I am a proud alumni class of 2005, my first year at Cal was the extremely painful 1-11 final season of Holmoe. By your rationale we shoulda kept Holmoe, and gave up on trying to improve the program whatsoever. It's shortsighted idiots like you that threaten to keep Cal a perennial loser on the field and in the public perception. The program has grown leaps and bounds since my freshman year. Sure there have been disappointments on the field, what program doesn't witness that? It might be easy for you to make these brazen remarks from the comfort of your Unit 3 dorm room as you intermittently write and yank off to web porn and think you're a football expert because you played a good season on NCAA 2012. We should be celebrating the fact that we pulled in an excellent class DESPITE all the adversity that these recruits, our coaches, and the entire program has had to endure the past couple months. I think that is the true test of a strong program. And this article is the true test of a piece of **** writer, I truly hope that no newspaper in their right mind would want to "Recruit" you after you graduate Cal. Suck it! <br /><br /><br /><br />Ahhhhhh that felt better. Nice to finally have posted on this board. Looking forward to next season, GO BEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:acclaim:

You know, it's one thing for him to have a defeatist attitude about Cal athletics... I've known a few of those in my day.<br /><br />But to also look down upon Cal as an university independent of athletics, with his snide comment about failed Ivies? I mean, seriously, who is this guy? What planet is he from?

100% agree. While his regard to the football program was my main point of frustration, I could hardly believe my eyes when i read that. I have NEVER heard anyone, albeit some pompous Ivy league asshole himself, especially a CAL student, call our school/program second rate to these other institutions. It scares me this guy gets published.

I really wish someone from the university could somehow step in. Not actually trying to outlaw what he said, because that would be censorship, but just pulling him aside and explaining that saying things like this publicly undermine the PR work that lots of people are trying to do. Make him feel bad in a way internet comments can't.

The Ivy League reference is odd - I didn't apply to any Ivies because I decided to stay in the Bay Area, but I spoke to several of them and was told my chances of getting in were excellent. I never once thought Cal was a consolation prize - and what the hell does that have to do with football?

There was a pretty large thread about this and an ensuing Twitter onslaught. I know we hate to admit this, but there are plenty of people who think like this at Cal and at a lot of schools. He has a right to his opinion. I've read some of his other work and he's clearly anti-sports and has the defeatist attitude as pointed out. <br /><br />I was heated reading it because its a slap in the face of every athlete who puts on the blue and gold here. I'm hoping someone with journalistic ability and appreciation of football writes the counterpoint.

Who is the genius at Daily Cal who thought he should write a commentary on Cal sports? Doesn't seem like he even understands anything about CFB. If we need to upgrade our program, maybe we start with upgrading the columnist from Daily Cal.

I was more pissed off reading this kid's article than reading all the udumb and fucla f*cks gloating about stealing our commits. <br /><br />This kid obviously doesn't know that our athletic program is actually very well regarded nation wide. Especially amongst the ivy crowd. Considering I attended one for grad school, I'll take my word over his. Furthermore, he clearly doesn't care about sending out such a negative message on NSD to the awesome recruits we DID get. This is now their university too, no need to bring it down. <br /><br />No, the only thing he cared about was pissing people off, raising eyebrows, and gaining readers. Strikes me that

A) His points about the difficulty of Cal becoming a "football power" have been long discussed in BI and have usually fractured into three camps: Won't be's; Could be's; and Should be's.

B) I think there is an interesting "nugget" in there (which also is a theme on these boards) that our recruiting the past 3 years has been, to use a term, "brittle" and that the loss of To$h suggested (and I think Tedford gets this) that especially in respect to social media the rest of the staff/football program needs to up its game. Some of that, bluntly, is going to be contributed by our recruits. Treggs is EN FUEGO on twitter. I am loving that kid in a big way.

C) His last paragraph, however, is just ridiculous. I am sorry that Cal was his "safety school". Kinda sad he doesn't really want to be there. The VAST majority of both Cal Students and Cal alumni are not eating at the Gourmet Ghetto on Vine. And MANY Cal students in Scores of academic departments came to Cal because it, by far, was the best possible choice for them and were THRILLED when they were accepted.

Repost from other thread on this topic...

He's perpetuating the loser mentality and that, I can't abide. 50+ years of institutional and cultural disdain for Cal Athletics is long enough. We are a great university because we excel academically across the board. This notion that we can't do it athletically without harming academics is BS. They do not have to be mutually exclusive (see our rival). They can both be beneficial to our overall brand if done well. We just spent half a billion dollars to what? Hear some dork tell us that we'll never compete in football at a high level? Stanfurd, Michigan and even sometimes Northwestern, all do it without compromising their academic status. This article was written by the stereotypical Cal student that many unfamiliar with our diverse university accept to be the norm. His position is ridiculous and one that I cannot disagree with more.

I got a full scholarship offer from Dartmouth, but instead paid my way through Cal with the help of loans. It was where *I* wanted to go to school - the flagship campus of the best university system in the world. My parents would've been thrilled for me wherever I ended up. Not all parents are like his parents pushing for Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, MIT, and Yale and considering any other school to be a failure. Heck, on the East Coast even Stanford is considered a bit of a joke compared to the Ivy League - on par with Duke.

I knew a kid while at Cal who was getting "poor grades" (B's) and was afraid it would hurt his chances for business school. He lasted three semesters before he transferred out to somewhere less brutal where he felt he would get better grades. The school he ended up at was Brown. That was good for a semester full of laughs for the rest of us. Yes, I am really sorry that I didn't go to a prestigious Ivy like Brown.

Cal's best are right up there with Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Caltech, and Stanford and better than other prestigious schools like Columbia, Cornell, Penn, and the lesser Ivy League schools.

Overall because of the size of the student body and UC's mandate to take the top 10% in the State it's easier to get into Cal than it is into some of those other schools and maybe Jack has a point there. The bottom tiers of Cal's student body probably have no business rubbing shoulders with intellectual giants like GWB at a school like Harvard. However, his comment is utterly insulting to much of the student body. He should speak for himself.
