his comments in the presser leave me dumbfounded...what the hell type of a c.e.o. would leave himself so vulnerable as to really have no knowledge of social networking and how it could be used either for you or against you in the arena? as usual, i think he was totally remiss in the way he (mis)handled this whole bloody affair..........simply put, it again tells me that he has lost control.......he should be in the nfl...that being said, i still believe that there is an enormous amount of talent on the team....let's see what he does with it this year (especially at qb)........

I wouldn't be that harsh but I get the point. And to be like this in the Bay Area, the center of all social media, is another thing.

I think JT has not been an effective delegator. He should be delegating this to some techy wiz kid (ya think we got a few at Cal?). He should also be delegating the clock management, T.O. and challenge situation to wiz kid grad assistants who can give him the instant scoop from the box in EVERY situation. Tedford does not think on his feet well -- his strengths are preparation, diligence and integrity -- all great things. But not thinking quickly and effectively in fluid situations. So delegate that kind of stuff, Teddy!

I was kinda dumbfounded but not surprised. There are a lot of 50 somethings that don't get this whole "cyberspace" thing.

My HOPE is that the qualities that the OP and KAB point out about Tedford which ARE true will lead him to grasp it. He probably will not embrace social media completely. But I do think he will just add another hour to his 23 hour work day and tweet away if he concludes that is what it will take. The one thing about Tedford, he isn't lazy and does, in fast, care.

The amazing thing about the whole Twitter revolution is that many of its users are older people.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/26/technology/internet/26twitter.html

Quote:

Almost everyone under 35 uses social networks, but the growth of these networks over the last year has come from older adults, according to a report from Forrester Research issued Tuesday. Use of social networking by people aged 35 to 54 grew 60 percent in the last year.

Elizabeth Taylor tweeted.

Don Rickles and Hugh Hefner, who are 35 years older than Tedford, tweets.

Joe Namath tweets.

Maybe it is a generational issue and I am older than Tedford - but what a waste of time a lot of this is -who cares if they are going to McDonald's or to the bathroom. Maybe some should be studying.

Here's an idea. Quinn Tedford is on Twitter and knows what he is doing. Delegate the Cal football program social media management to him. Seriously.

Damn, that's a great idea. Yeah, let Quinn be Cal's Cyber-Coach.

Dude could be another Jay Paterno....in a very good way.

Well if it is a generational issue, people will care if they go to McDonald's because that's where they get their senior coffee.

I think that would be fine. Hell, I am ready to give Treggs a degree right now in social media marketing (but he needs to play football for 4 years) and let him do it cause he is fairly good at it for a "leader" in respect to his position in the Twitterverse heirarchy - informative and catchy posts to conect with followers.

ok seriously, relax. it isn't a big deal that tedford didn't participate in it this year. the bigger thing here is that he's identified that he has to embrace it, and will starting this year.

you guys are acting like we lost all of our recruits because they didn't get DM's from Teddy.

he's a middle aged football coach. Those guys thought stepping out meant going from those black, ridge-soled coaching shoes to nike running shoes. They enjoy being locked up in a room watching video of practice. I'm sure Tedford sees Twitter, the internet, texting etc. as a waste of time and at best a necessary evil. I still don't get Twitter and I'm a hip, with-it 52 year old.

Can you imagine Tedford writing something like "who wants to play dominoes with ya boie"? I think he can use twitter and facebook to write things about Cal in a dignified manner but not necessarily to chat up recruits in public. Of course, I wouldn't mind someone from Cal with Avery's spirit communicating with recruits on twitter.

Besides, as Tedford stated, the current players are really the best recruiters. I would still like to have an elite recruiter like Orgeron on the staff to get the recruits fired up.

Ya know...I wonder if Tedford didn't delegate this "twitter stuff" like you are suggesting. Based on the cal staff...I'd have to guess that Tosh Lupoi was "delegated" all of this "technology stuff". Is he now in trouble because he didn't delegate it to more people?

I'm not saying he doesn't have issues delegating. I think the biggest difference between now and when he was successful was what he took the reins of and what he delegated to others (now he seems to do neither fully, leading to confusion, lack of discipline, and lack of execution), but I'm not sure this was the best example.

Seriously, Tedford doesn't need to tweet/facebook, but he needs to recognize the value of it, and delegate these tasks better. Heck, I am sure there are students that will happily to manage our 'cyberspace' interests under guidelines from JT.

Orgeron???
Can someone please tell me it's possible to get a great, elite recruiter without it being someone like Orgeron or Lupoi? There has to be SOMEONE out there who is both a quality coach/recruiter and ethical!!!

Urban Meyer. Wait, no. Ummm. There are coaches who were great recruiters like Jimbo Fisher who were also great coaches without having to bend the rules.

By the way, look who made the top 25 list in 2010:

TODD HOWARD, UCLA
Buzz: UCLA clearly needed to sign some impact defensive linemen in this recruiting class. When the Bruins needed to close along the defensive front, they sent Howard to seal the deal. Howard was responsible for helping reel in top-10 prospect Owamagbe Odighizuwa, arguably the most highly regarded player signed by UCLA in the Rick Neuheisel era. Howard also helped turn Cassius Marsh, another top-100 prospect. Howard also had a hand in many of the Bruins' other d-line commits, like Derrick Bryant, Wesley Flowers and Sealii Epenesa.

He's not 50 something, he's 50. Barely. There is no excuse. But since we are talking CEO stuff, he needs to learn how to work smarter, not longer. Social media is a prime tool to do that. Sure, you need the personal touch. You also need to learn the language of the people you are communicating with.
