Saw Stefan McClure on campus yesterday. He is not limping.

Looks like he's recovering nicely from his ACL tear, and I would feel pretty confident that we get him back at full strength before September.

I don't think "limping vs. not limping" is any indicator of how he is doing developing the strength back around the knee...

I've only been reading this board a couple of months now but one thing I am confident in saying. Logic has no place here.

And for being a buzz kill, someone will come along and accuse you of being a troll.

What are you talking about? It means that he has near full range of motion in that knee and almost full strength in his quadriceps of that leg which are the 2 most critical indicators in the recovery from ACL reconstruction. He obviously has had the benefit of "early motion rehab".

I had no idea that walking demonstrates "nearly full range of motion in the knee" or "almost full strength in the quadriceps".

fine. My stepdaughter was not limping, but wasn't anywhere near going back to sports after her ACL surgery. You can judge "strength" by no limping??
I hope he has a great recovery, not like I am not glass half full...he would be great to have in the secondary, no question...

I think Bigelow is a good example of someone who wasn't "limping" last year and looked fine at a glance, but wasn't recovered enough to play at 100% game speed potential.

With that said, I hope McClure makes a full recovery and can get back on the field at some point in the future on his own schedule. It's got to be tough going through all of that rehab.

Just to be more glass half full-had he been obviously limping, etc. that would have been full blown bad news for sure, so, "not limping" is a step(pun intended) in the right direction...

McClure is shooting for playing this year, but he had a very serious injury. I interpret that as maybe 50/50 based on Coach's tone when he made the comment, and nothing else. Coach T. said he is close to McClure and is monitoring his situation.

this. you can walk without a limp a few months after major knee surgery but to be able to play at the caliber level of pac 12 football is a whole nother universe. i still say he's not back to 100% until 2013 but definitely rooting for him

^^^this. Might be able to contribute in the latter half of the season, a few series a game.

It can be psychological as well. Even when a serious injury is physically healed in can be very difficult to really trust that you can push it 100% like you did previously.

Get well, Stefan!

I honestly did not consider this...but he's moving better than he was just 3 weeks before, when I last spotted him.

My post was not directed at you and what you wrote, and it is encouraging that he is not limping . I appreciate as do others I am sure the info. I think the hope that he is full strength by September is very optimistic, but that's okay!

Exactly... The knee and supporting leg muscles need to 'relearn" how to be athletic... not just pedestrian. Standard full recovery from a full ACL tear is 9 months to a year... It is impossible to play cornerback in the PAC-12 with less than a 100% knee...

I'd rather he medically redshirt. Our cornerbacks should be ok next year, so let's give it another year and ensure he's fully healthy.

I agree, if he's not 100% don't risk it, he has a bright future at Cal and probably in the pros

I think you are right and wrong.

Given the time frame, he could be walking without a limp now even without a repaired ACL.

OTOH, not limping CLEARLY means he has strengthened it enough to walk without a limp. That cannot be taken as a bad sign.
