Do you have a source or are you guessing? I thought it most likely that he'd go to Tennessee.

Being reported by ESPN. Broncos said to want to trade Tebow so it'd be funny if Smith signed with Miami and Tebow ended up with the Niners.

If Smith does not come back, I think Harbaugh will find a QB just as good or better.

Tebow is not going to the Niners. More likely Miami with Smith staying put.

Smith will come back to the Niners. He apparently really wants to stay in CA. If he doesnt, Niners are probably going to go for Josh Johnson. He was Harbaugh's first QB prodigy back at USD

As nice as it was to see Alex Smith finally experience some success, he is still just an average NFL quarterback in terms of effectiveness. The Niners can find another one of those.

really who the F is going want tim tebow. what can you do with that guy if you dont want to change your whole offense around, not that i dont think he can be sucessful in that type offense but its so unconventional the way he plays that no one is going to want the guy

Not sure what Manning was thinking when he picked the Broncos if he really wants another ring. If he simply wants the bucks, well who can blame him. Denver was 8-8 last season. I suppose he could get them to 12-6 but it doesn't look easy. Also I doubt he'll like winter outdoors in Denver with elevation. Oh well, it'll be fun to see him play against Oakland.

Yeah, a very curious choice. FWIW, Denver was 8-8 last season with a lot of luck. Their point differential indicated something more like a 6-10 team, and of course they played in the weakest division in football. Maybe Manning can turn them around, but usually older QBs recovering from injuries don't want to play in a cold-weather city.

Well, Peyton Manning must be thinking that, "if Denver can get to the playoffs and beat Pittsburg with a non-quarterback starting at the quarterback position, surely they'll be a contender with me!"

Puzzling choice even with him wanting to stay in the AFC and the $.

He doesn't have to spend the whole season learning a brand-new playbook, like he would've had at the other places.

Also, Manning is his own coach.

So I didn't see him and Harbaugh getting along, since Harbaugh knows offensive foootball.

He can throw to Eric Deker, that dude who burned us in the Gophers game.

Somebody will bring him in as a back-up just for the money his fan base can bring in. Maybe Jacksonville?

Not likely with some actual receivers to throw to this year.

I didn't see him and Harbaugh having any trouble getting along. Learning the playbook? SF runs it's version of the WC offense which is right up Manning's alley. He actually could have eliminated the problems SF had last year getting plays in to Smith in time by knowing offense so well and being able to call his own plays if needed. This decision came down to nothing more than staying in the AFC and picking the team in the best situation to succeed of the two in play from that conference.

Manning and Harbaugh are both Type A personalities used to calling their own plays.

Manning's coaches in Indy were more advisors and collaborators than people he was actually subservient to. Think of the last head coach, who I believe was Peyton's QB coach before getting that job.

In Harbaugh, Manning would've had an actual boss who would critique him and taking him out of that confort zone, for better or for worse.

That extra coaching might've taken Manning out of his playoff slump.

Meanwhile, I read somwhere this morning (can't remember) that the offense Denver runs is more Peyton-friendly than the other teams.

Wouldn't it be funny Manning's "interest" in the niners was just a way to expose Harbaugh's "commitment" to Smith? After all, along with the Packers the Niners are now baby bro's biggest obstacles to the SB. The fact that Harbaugh is a douche is just a plus.

Harbaugh doesn't call the plays, and didn't call them at Stanford. I guess if the media says it enough times it becomes true and obviously Harbaugh isn't going to correct them for giving him more credit than he deserves. Greg Roman is way under appreciated. So was David Shaw for that matter. Harbaugh is great at what he does, but he is not nearly the mastermind of the offense and QBing position that people think he is. He's a great motivator and must be good at the other stuff you need a head coach to do.

Have there been any actual stories about what Harbaugh personally did to make Smith perform better? If so, I haven't heard anything other than helping him with his confidence. Smith had virtually no practice under Harbaugh and Roman before the season started and all he had to learn was a playbook that he received with no instruction before the lockout. Unfortunately, doesn't appear to be interesting to the media because they like to perpetuate the Harbaugh legend and ignore the facts.

I'd be happy to be proven wrong but I'd be surprised if that will happen.

I think I read that Smith and Manning have the same agent? I think a more likely explanation is that this was a ploy by the agent to help drive up both Smith and Manning's price.

A Yahoo writer described Smith as a 'textbook definition of a system quarterback'. This is probably very true and he would be an idiot to act like a prima donna and try his luck elsewhere. Unbelievable that this guy (Smith) thinks he's worth more than $26M for 3 years.

It's hard to tell what offense Denver even runs after watching Tebow mangle and freelance it last year. I still doubt Manning would have had much problem in SF, but it's a moot point now.

He's not doing anything that any QB wouldn't do in the same circumstance. He knows he has the 9ers at a bit of a disadvantage and is using it as a negotiating ploy. In the end, he'll most likely sign a slightly-sweetened deal that's been offered for the last week.

The 9ers are losers if Smith doesn't step down voluntarily? Wow, harsh.

The intent of my original comment about the 49ers being the biggest loser if they dont resign Smith was this -

Smith was going to sign with the Niners if they didnt start pursuing Manning. Once they did, he began to hold out and look at other options. If Miami didnt sign Garrard and Seahawks sign Matt Flynn, Smith could have potentially left the Niners quarterback-less.

So let's see - Niners go from having an above-average QB, decided to pursue Manning, lose out, and as a possibility - lose their above-average QB, making them QB-less. If that had happened, the Niners would have definitely been the biggest loser out of all of this.

But luckily for 49ers fans, things worked out so that Smith HAD to re-sign with the Niners and we are back to square-one (without taking account of the other FA pick ups of course) VS not having a QB.
