Yeah, but being number 8 out of 12 is nothing to crow about. Hopefully, we end up better than 8th place in the Pac this season.

I notice that Mike Leach is listed as the Texas Tech coach; I didn't realize TT is in the Pac-12. Doesn't inspire much confidence in the competence of the author of the article.

I am convinced AMY is amongst us. It commented on the above link only a few minutes after Okaydo's post:

Is there another coach in college football other than Tedford who does less with more? As a Pac 12 fan I hope Cal state keeps him around forever.

Tedford should be third or fourth on this arbitrary and rather bizarre list.

On the other hand, there are coaches better than him that move on (i.e. Bellotti, Carroll, and Harbaugh). Also, I'm not sure Tedford is better than Shaw. Time will tell. For now, at least Shaw took Stanford to a Rose Bowl.

Also, I'm not sure if the OP even bothered reading the article because the actual article was a critique by Ted Miller on Athlon's ranking of Pac-12 coaches, and in the article, Miller specifically says he'd rank Shaw ahead of Tedford. Miller does go on to say:

"sometimes a recent downturn after sustained success hurts (Riley and Tedford).

And, of course, this list is fluid on an annual (weekly?) basis. Two years ago, Riley would have been in the top-three or four, and in as late as 2008, Tedford would have been, too."

Several of these coaches have a body of work elsewhere but have yet to coach a game in the PAC-12. We'll see how they look a couple of seasons from now.

I read that Athlon article earlier today and as soon as I saw Sark at #6, I knew it was a BS list.

I also disagree with Kiffin's ranking. He really hasn't accomplished anything.

Uh, no...... I'm pretty sure this is not true because my head would have exploded and when I looked in the mirror today it was still there.

He proves (along with Chip Kelly)) that a coach and a grown man that wears a visor is most likely a douche.

Yes, I agree he should be. However, he isn't for good reason and I can't argue with it.

Hopefully he does something soon to move back up the rankings.

I think sark is a total douche...but our coach still hasn't beat him. Sark inherited a 0-12 team. So it's not like sarks teams out-talented JT's.

JT needs to beat chip, kiffen, sark. He is 0-8 against them.

And a grown man who wears a baseball hat most likely has a monkey butt on his crown. So what. A reason to hate (as in douche). I can dislike Kelly and Kiffin for many reasons, but because they wear a visor? C'mon. I wear a visor for two reasons when I play golf. #1 it keeps the sun out of my eyes which are very sensitive. #2 a baseball hat for me is too hot, for I take hormones post cancer surgery which give me hot flashes. Guess that puts me at the top of your "douche" list. Grow up, and learn the full story prior to hating.

I dislike Kiffin and Kelly for many reasons. Yes, I'm a little jealous of the success that they've had but primarily I don't care for them because I believe them both to be lacking in character.

That being said, wow you took my obviously humorous statement way too seriously. You certainly have very good reasons for wearing a visor. I suspect that neither Kiffin nor Kelly share your reasons. I did not mean to offend you and if I did, I apologize.

I don't "hate" them and I certainly don't hate you or have you on some "douche list". I do however think that KIFFIN and KELLY look silly and slightly juvenile on the sideline of a football field wearing a visor.

I'd probably like your visor if I saw you wearing it on the links though. Especially if it were blue and gold and says Cal. I am grown up by the way and if I ever make a statement about YOU, I will do my best to get the whole story.

Here's a ranking of existing Pac-12 football coaches according to their career W/L Record against .500+ D1 Teams. The only exception is Jim Mora whose record is shown against NFL teams with .500+ records.

Coach / Seasons / Rec vs .500+ Teams / Road Record:

1) Chip Kelly / 3 / .727 / .867
2) David Shaw / 1/ .667 / 1.000
3) Kyle Whittingham / 7 / .553 / .634
4) Lane Kiffin / 3 / .522 / .625
5) Rich Rodriguez / 10/ .472 / .569
6) Mike Leach / 10 / .439 / .481
7) Jeff Tedford / 10 / .415 / .464
8) Mike Riley / 11 / .373 / .393
9) Steve Sarkisian / 3 / .360 / .250
10) Todd Graham / 6 / .342 / .541
11) Jim Mora, Jr / 4 / .306 / .394 (NFL games only)
12) Jon Embree / 1 / .167 / .143

With only one season as head coaches, it's hard to know if Shaw's and Embree's records are reflective of their future. Surprisingly, Mike Riley's record has slipped more than Tedford's the past few years to the point where he should no longer be considered better than JT. Todd Graham is way over-rated as a coach. His overall record is .620 but his record against .500+ D1 Teams is a meager .342 (a 45% decline). Lastly, it's hard to compare Jim Mora, Jr with the others because it's much more difficult winning against winning teams in the NFL than it is winning against .500+ D1 Teams in the NCAA.

Matter of fact, I do sport a blue and gold one often. But no, I really don't look like much on the links, visor or no. I was not detecting your humor, but had seen a lot of comments about visors (usually relating to various FB coaches) that were casting them as objects of derision. Consequently, preferring a visor to a BB cap (especially one with the brim protecting one's neck from sunburn), I am sure I went overboard on my response. Regardless, cheers, and I really enjoy your comments about NYC, one of my favorite places in the world.

Surprisingly, Mike Riley's record has slipped more than Tedford's the past few years to the point where he should no longer be considered better than JT.

True what you point out....but what would be of more import is that Tedford has gotten a lot better recruits on a whole than the Beavers....yet they are close in your cited performance.....what I'm suggesting is that it is possible that Riley may be the better coach if he had the recruiting pipeline that Tedford apparently has and has had...? So, eigth place may be the correct assessment for Coach Tedford?

However, coach Tedford should be better because he or us have put him between a rock and a hard place....he has the new Cal sports facilities so he has no more excuses (unless the Tree people return)....he appears to be going back to basics whichmight work.....that is, get the high output from the running game with a bigger and stronger OL.....this is good....but it may take another season or two to get noticeable results....maybe not.....but probably so.....

There's no argument here. Time and time again Cal has not won the big games and have collapsed at the worst possible times. Coach Tedford brought this program back to relevance but until he gets us competing for even a Pac-12 North title he has no business being near the top 6 coaches in the conference.

I love Leach, but I am not sure how he operates in the Pac. If Saint Tedford has is head taken off for a fairly innocuous comments last year by Scott, Leach is going placed in a straight jacket by the Commish. Start taking over/under on game suspensions per year. And I am not sure Rich Rod translates at all. That offense may seem wide-open back East, but here is just another spread which everyone has figured out how to defend on the west coast. If you took a poll among coaches, Riley and Tedford get moved to neat the top, and some of the younger coaches get moved down. Kifffen is a good example (though Tedford would put him near the top). A lot of the coach's picked Erickson as the best coach when asked by Pac 12 pre-season media because of his record and experience (and Tedford and Kifffen said so because they had worked with him). But all that didn't translate in victories at a bad setting. Sometimes the better coaches (as opposed to say recruiters) don't always win. Gotta hand it to Kelly who is a decent recruiter, but has created a system that allows a lot of 3 star guys to excel (and yes, I realize a few of the guys are 5 stars like the Black Mambo).
