Audio/transcript of the entire speech:

By the way, Kennedy, who was auditing classes at Stanford in the fall of 1940, attended the 1940 Big Game at Memorial Stadium.

Quote:

The last time that I came to this stadium was 22 years ago, when I visited it in November of 1940 as a student at a nearby small school for the game with Stanford. And we got a--I must say I had a much warmer reception today than I did from my Coast friends on that occasion. In those days we used to fill these universities for football, and now we do it for academic events, and I'm not sure whether this doesn't represent a rather dangerous trend for the future of our country.

Thank you for remembering and posting.

It would be nice to have another Harvard graduate come to speak on a Charter Day before he completes his tenure in the White House.

How many presidents have spoken at Cal? In addition to JFK, I believe Harry Truman (in 1948) and William Howard Taft spoke on campus. Anyone else have any knowledge (or memories)?

Especially since Obama's grandparents, who raised him, actually attended Cal for a brief time before graduating from the Univeristy of Washington.

Here's Truman campaigning in Berkeley on June 14, 1948:

I was trying to figure out where this picture was taken.

Turns out it's University Avenue at Oxford, entering the circular driveway into Cal.

That Acheson Physician's Building is still standing.

Isn't it premature to invite Romney?

I was there with my dad ('37) on the field during the speech. At the time, I was in high school.

Thanks for posting - I was there. The Bears should use this in their recruiting video.

I recall an article detailing why Cal, despite being the pride and joy of public education in America, can not get any "big-time" speakers due to the threat of protesters.

Kind of lame if you ask me that people feel the need to ruin someone's big moment following their huge achievement.

And just yesterday I was in Alameda with my wife reminiscing about the day I saw the President. "Yep, I stood right there and saw him go by". Being from Washngton D.C., she was singularly unimpressed. Nevertheless, for a 12 year old - it was a very BIG deal....

Wow, the last 50 years sure flew by. I'd love to be here when someone posts something about the 75th anniversary...

Speaking of which, this is the 10th anniversary of Jonny Moseley as UC Berkeley's commencement speaker.

At the time, Moseley was a college dropout who was the host of MTV's "The Real World Road Rules Challenge."

As a friend of mine wrote at the time, "The Terrorists Have Won."

Teddy Roosevelt spoke at the Greek Theater for a commencement the year it was opened.

I was in Army ROTC and we were the 'honor guard' in our heavy wool olive green uniforms. We formed a double row on the field betweent the speaker's platform at midfield to the north tunnel. As he left the field we stood at attention and saluted as he walked through our cordon. There were plenty of Secret Service guys all around and we were told that by forming this cordon it made it difficult for anyone to get too close to the President or to leave him vulnerable to an assassination attempt in the long, open walk from the fifty yard line to the tunnel. He was a dynmic speaker and a very handsome man that day. It was the only time I saw a US President.

Missed the Truman speech but was there for the Roosevelt speech at the Greek. It was especially inspiring knowing that he came all the way here by train and carriage. I think he left for Yosemite that very day to meet his friend John Muir. As for myself, I went over to Top Dog afterwards to have me a hot link. :rollinglaugh::bluecarrot:
