Both 2010 and 2011 were great, but what is your point?

He was the guy recruiting them. I hate to$h but look what happened to our 2012 class when he left for UW. That falls on JT and the rest of the coaches. The other coaches need to push their weight better imo. 2012 was a cruel lesson that you can't put a class on 1 guy.

Tosh's real recruiting strength was his 'believability' not his 'personality.' Now his narrative is trashed. Of course he will land some good recruits, but his days as a 'one hit wonder' rock star are done. Can't recruit under under a cloud the way you could under a bright blue sky. His issue isn't Cal undermining his efforts, but every PAC 12 recruiter who will be reinforcing to parents and recruits that he is not trustworthy, a parent hearing that 7 or 8 times even indirectly will feel the effect . Tosh believed his own press. That it was him, instead of the 'him' that De La Salle and Cal helped to create. Tosh is not a 'stand up guy', he is now a 'stand alone guy' with NO STORY TO TELL ... he probably now holds half the recruiting power he once had. And by the time Tosh 'outlives' this mess in a few years, it will be self-evident that he is not magical in his powers and Tosh will sink back to average in people's perceptions. It will hit his soul like a tsunami. That he made a colossal mistake and acted as a mere 20-something. More like a player than a man. That he is actually no different than one of the player-divas who signed a scholarship to Cal .... only to flunk out and become forgotten. I hope none of this comes to pass and that Tosh will humble himself before Coach Tedford and the two of them can find professional reconciliation. Besides, the only reason it felt rational to Tosh was that Sarkesian drove the idea. But Sark is nothing more than the very immature older brother of the highly immature younger brother (Tosh).

The test of how good Tosh was, is not 2012. He undermined it so of course you are going to get it blown up. Let's see if the 2013 class is fantastic or lagging. This will be the acid test.

He didn't win Rivals 2010 recruiter of the year for nothing.

He's responsible for Barr, Jalil and Moala and put a little time in on Lopa. Gibson and Scarlett's primary recruiter was Thompson.

Don't forget the 2010 class, though. He signed exactly one DL recruit, Gabe King, and had lots of misses, so while a great recruiter, he didn't walk on water.

I spoke to someone highly involved in ucla recruiting and he confirmed that Howard (not Neuheisel) was primarily responsible for bringing in all the top DL they had during a 3 or so year run, like Price, Owa, Marsh and others.

With all he has to sell at Cal, I think you'll see Howard recruit well here himself.

Let me add a classy post to the long line of classy posts I am known for and just state:

I've left several employers in my lifetime-some horrible-but always with a proper notice and displaying hard work and loyalty until the end. It's pretty easy to accomplish even when you can't stand a minute of it. It's easily done. Factoring in one's Alma Mater and program they were a part of during their formative years, it seems highly unlikely that one would leave on any different terms. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. Leaving a company or even a family for better opportunities and riches is to be commended. Adversely affecting them in your parting actions and sabotaging them in the departure process is another beast altogether. As more intelligent people than me have noted, what comes around goes around...

Great student-athletes have come to Cal over the years and they will continue to do so in the future. The program learned it's lesson and maybe now things may even improve. Who knows? We have a lot to offer. We always have and we always will. I'm happy we have the players on our current roster and think we will land some great recruits this year and top talent in the future.

That said... F Tosh! Don James did not land in Seattle again. We'll be fine. Look at my signature line. Tosh gave us nothing there. In fact, I may have to update it thanks to the Lady Bear Swimming and Dive Team.

GO BEARS!

Thanks for that info MoragaBear. I look forward to seeing how Howard does.

The test of Tosh will come this year. Let's see what he does with the DL at UW. Do they show significant improvement?

I'm interested to see how UW does this year. If they can also show significant improvement that will help their recruiting too.

I thought Scarlett's main recruiters were Gould and Tosh.

You're right. I remembered that incorrectly.

When they changed their recruitment of Scarlett from DE to rush backer, Thompson jumped in with Gould and Lupoi later on.

No denying he played a huge role in a great DL class but as noted earlier, much of what he had to sell was related to his experience as a lifelong Cal guy. Without it, it will be interesting to see how much wind is taken out of his sails.

He who shall be named can talk circles around anyone and is a great salesman (and a born liar). He'll find a way to sell something to the new recruits who won't remember or give a damn how he left CAL in 2012.

I suppose we don't want the type of recruit who can't see him for what he is at this point, ultimately.

Like a poster above said, I'm very pleased with our current roster. The sting of toshgate has subsided, and it's time to forge ahead; to grab destiny by the short hairs.

I brought it up after listening to the Barr video. He mentioned that he wanted to get out of L.A. and but that he also liked Tosh, he was a good recruiter, blah blah blah, and followed up giving props to Howard. I mean, Tosh is gone, why even bother mentioning him? Yes, he reduced the potentially top 5 class into a smoldering top 30 class and yes, we'll never forget the alamo, but he must have been crucial in building the staunch incoming 2011 dline class. A class that I think will revive the hit squad(with DB's to boot). A class that we will all love despite the obvious finger prints of Tosh.

Why do you need to keep going over old grounds.

Real question is whether they would have come to Cal in any event, regardless of who their recruiter was? I suspect tiny, moose and Barr would be here anyway.

Coach Howard seems like a substantial upgrade. Proven college and NFL coaching and playing experience (All-Conference at Texas A&M, two years as a D-Lineman with the Kansas City Chiefs) along with two degrees and a solid academic record. Recruited well at UCLA. The 20 hour drive in the snow from Pullman to Portland. A record of honesty, loyalty and integrity. Let's see if To$h can try to measure up to Howard given Lupoi's many personal shortcomings.

"look what happened"...yes, recruits were lost but Cal's ranking for the year wasn't significantly different than the average of the last 5 years or so...

Actually there is one thing I noticed about Howard. Several D-line that he tried to recruit where he had to go head-to-head with Tosh for the player (Marsh, Owa) he won the recruiting battle.

THere is no question that Tosh was a bit of a miracle in how he improved Cal recruiting, but part of me wonders if he'd be getting the same accolades if he'd been at U$C or an SEC school with the same results. It seems to me that a huge part of why everyone talks so highly about him is that he recruited well "At Cal", and msot of the national sportswriters didn't understand that.

If that's true, and Howard is as good as the scuttlebutt hints, then 2013 should see the recruiting be strong again, and Cal will continue to recruit well.

We'll find out in about 11 months.
