looking at the seat selection site it looks like there will now be two big video boards where the old scoreboards used to be. The temporary mini-tron location appears to have been abandoned. Anyone know if this is what we'll actually have or if its just a misleading graphic?

(we also appear to be leading USC 14-10... if we were going to fake scores, couldn't we have gone a bit more bold than a 4 point lead?)

Cal really needs to do a major upgrade of the old minitron. It was a joke--way too small for a major college football venue.

Sadly, it's looking like the Video Board footprint won't change - this was one of the concessions to the Hill People. Resolution will be much better, but everything I've heard indicates it will be the same size. Totally agree that this is way too small for a big time college football program.

As long as they don't have those stupid racing cars...

Whenever there is a new building project, they always include an 'artist's conception'. In the artist's conception, there's always plenty of parking.

Since they can use the entire foot print of the old scoreboard to enclose the video board, maybe it is bigger than the old stand alone one they used. Not sure.Binoculars.

I don't know why, but whenever I see the term 'Hill People' I think of this:

Agree! Guess the small video boards are just more evidence that we're not a "big time college football program". To hell with the hill people; no way we should have let them dictate the size of the video boards.

I think I'd be happier if CMS was next to this group as opposed to the ones we're stuck with. I'm guessing Lothar would enjoy a good tailgate now and then.

Not sure that it matters - just means we'd get bigger video commercials. I don't really care if they show a bigger picture of the pet of the week, or the dirtiest car in the lot, or dot races, etc. I don't think they've ever used the video to replay a controversial call at Memorial.

I kinda like that they are keeping the scoreboards in the original framework. A huge video board would be out of place in Memorial.

I dunno; I think new video boards that are mounted on the original framework but extend beyond both sides of that framework would look OK and the resulting larger videos would enhance the fan experience. Just my opinion.

Maybe if we must keep the Mini-tron at their present size, could we add spot lights to shine up toward the homes.:p

Great idea! Let's also add about a hundred loudspeakers playing rock music.

Here's the language from the 'Renovation Highlights' section of the new Memorial page:

State-of-the art scoreboards with enhanced video and graphics capabilities within the existing structures at the north and south ends of the stadium.

Mockup of one of the new scoreboards from the 'Corporate Partner' page:

If that's roughly accurate then each of the new scoreboards should be ~ 2 - 2.5x larger than the old BearVision using the photo below as a size reference. The new scoreboards should be much higher resolution as well.

That's interesting but I'm pretty sure that's not right. What I've been told is that the "existing structure" in this case means the BearVision screen. I even offered to throw a few sheckles at this problem and was told that our hands were tied by the environmental impact report we worked out with the Hill People. The Cal folks I spoke with seemed genuinely distressed by the limitation, which I just can't believe would have been the case if we could really get something in there 2.5x what we have now. But with that said, I really, really hope you're right. Would be nice for us to join the 21st century.

the new boards will continue the glorious tradition of no stats and in addition NO SCORE! Tedford has mentioned that he thinks the score is a distraction especially in the SC and Oregon games.

I think the only one distracted by stats and scores on the scoreboard is Tedford. The rest of us can handle the information overload. Wish our HC was more concerned with out coaching the other team rather than worrying about what is on the stadium scoreboard.

Is it safe to say that this is now a pile on Tedford thread?

Am I the only one who thinks video boards are the biggest waste of money in athletics? If they could show plays that are under review, it would be different, but as the Pac-12 banned that a few years ago, I don't find myself looking at it that often.

Does anyone know if this Pac-12 ban is a fact, or just an excuse from Cal AD? It seems to me that when I've been to SC games in LA, they replay questionable calls over and over.

At Cal, we don't replay questionable calls whether they're under review or not. In that regard I agree completely with SacCityBear.
