So as we await fresh Spring Practice reports, and mull over our concerns and expectations for 2012, let us look back with a positive light on the 2011 season;

1)What was your favorite game of 2011?
2) What was your favorite play of 2011?
3) Who was your favorite player in 2011?

Not that it matters much, but here are my answers:

1)Colorado-Though it caused me undue stress, it was a pretty exciting win
2)The game-winning brother-to-brother pass at Colorado
3) Isi Sofele-never thought he would be that good, I admired his scrappiness.

If highlights against bottom of the pac Colorado are our positives, I should prob go cry once more for 2011.

...to turn this negative. I was just offering an opinion. You can in fact enjoy games and plays against sub-par competition.

1. Cal vs. ASU, it was a wild shootout in the desert, very exciting.
2. Maynard to Allen - endzone fade vs. Colorado, thrilling finish.
3. Marvin Jones - model Cal player - excellent character and very skilled, those circus catches on the sideline with his toes were phenomenal, I remember watching the slow-mo replays and just being awe-struck.

Looking forward to 2012!

That slant to KA @ UW for the TD was the most exciting play of the year for me, as it turned out. Why? Because at that time it was early in the season and there were plenty of unknowns -- i.e. there was much hope for our football team to go places and much hope in Maynard. When I saw that play and after watching Maynard bring us back at CU, I thought Maynard had the "it" factor. I felt really alive about Cal football at that point. And even as we lost, we went down fighting on the 2-3 yard line or whatever it was. That's what I wanted to see again. No more blowouts to decent teams. Back to playing some competitive football against good teams. Well, this kind of thing didn't vanish in 2011 but at that point in time I had much hope and vision of national relevancy for our football team. Pretty much went downhill from there LOL.

Unfortuntely, that play broke the Roth to Walker longest pass completion record.

Haha, it always goes back to Joe Roth. Which is fine with me.

Roth to Walker just has a better ring in the history books than Maynard to Allen.

Yes, Kline to Treggs has a lot of nice promise. Roth to Walker had results. Here's to Kline and Treggs breaking lots of records.

I'll take Kline to Treggs, Powe, Lawler, Dozier and Harper. Lots of targets to throw to!

tie between ASU game and Colorado
Honorable mention to the furd game in a losing effort.
Favorite player: Zach Maynard-just kidding-Marvin Jones
Favorite play: I would like to take this opportunity to restore a play that was taken away from Coleman Edmund against Colorado. It was one of the greatest catches I've seen. Everyone knows it was a catch. But the "new rule" said it wasn't. Great job Coleman.

I agree completely. Since Cal lost that game maybe we can just ask for that play to be deleted from the record book.

My favorite game was probably Oregon State. Those Beavers had it coming for a while, at that point. We just overwhelmed them.

My favorite play / player was Kapp's touchdown. That guy really deserved it, if anybody does. His absence the last few games was a hit, one that largely goes unnoticed. Anyway, that was a serious feelgood moment.

Favorite game: ASU
Favorite Player: Marvin Jones.
Most Encouraging: the OLine improvement.
Most Admired: Isi's True Grit (I do not think he is the best RB; but he is one tough SOB.)

Maynard's name doesn't flow as well, but Allen's flows better than Walker. Roth to Allen would have been ideal

Too bad Ira Heyman wasn't a football player/wide receiver. We could have called it the Roth IRA connection.

True, one of the most entertaining, (and nerve wracking), games I've seen was against Wazzoo in 1974. Cal had a good team that year, (Bartkowski, Muncie, Walker, Rivera), while the Coogs were awful, they finished 2-9 for the year. During that game, their QB threw more interceptions, (4), than completions to his team, yet Cal squeaked out a 37-33 win. IIRC there were seven lead changes.

Back on topic...

Favorite game: ASU, very entertaining.
Favorite player: Toss between Isi, Marvin Jones and KA
Most admired: Toss again, this time between Isi, (tough and very hard working), and don't laugh, but Giorgio Tavecchio. Any kicker who finishes an entire season with a higher percentage of FG's made than XP's deserves some mention.

Sure did, best pass play ever was the winning 46 yard TD against SJSU in 1975. Joe Roth threw it so perfectly Walker didn't look back, and barely looked up just before the catch. He just held his arms out, didn't alter his stride a bit, and the ball landed softly in his hands. If there was ever a perfectly executed play, that was it.

Then there was the next year, also against SJSU. 289 yards, 4td's for Walker. He and Roth made it look like they were playing against a Pop Warner team.

Exactly. Walker was a stud. Imagine Walker in the pass happy game of today. He would shred DBs.

Walker said he didn't even look for the ball until he got to about the goal line (like you said). At that point he turned his head and the ball was there, so he caught it. shrug.

...in light of his incredible career is that he could only see out of one eye. Try catching a pass with no depth perception.
