Why no Spring Game?

Tedford has never wanted to have Spring game that might actually be interesting to watch for fans. Most other schools do this. Hell Stanford is using Kesar Stadium to drum up interest for the upcoming season.

He is getting paid enough to make some concessions. Am I the only one tired of this dog and pony show?

Well, Tedford is calling this year's last open practice a "Spring Game":

I doubt it will be a game, but more like the situational scrimmage of years past.

he doesn't want anyone to witness the event and therefore question his decision on the starter at QB.

If you coach at any level, in any sport, there is pretty nearly always going to be somebody who questions decisions around who is going to start.

Somehow I think that is not influencing his decision to have a spring game or not.

Maybe Tedford's decision is simply to reduce the risk of injury to players, most importantly to keep key players healthy for the season. Who knows, maybe he feel some heat? Just speculating and thinking out loud, don't mind me.

If 30,000-50,000 Cal fans would show up and buy tickets for a spring game like in LSU or Oregon, then there'd be a spring game.

But they won't. So why bother?

I do believe next year all the spring games will be televised by the Pac-12 network, so there will be incentive to put together that type of contest.

Tedford used to have a spring game, as did most of the prior coaches. I went occasionally, although there were never many fans there. I recall he cancelled it one year because of an injury depleted squad, and then decided the spring game wasn't as helpful in evaluating and teaching as the 15 practices ended as a controlled scrimmage, where he could focus on certain specific players and plays. Between a better coaching tool, but less of a fan pleaser, Tedford picked his preference. When you guys coach the team, you can do it your way. Until then live with it.

Really, you bring up his pay as to why he should have a Spring Game that a bunch of internet fans want, but only a couple hundred fans will show up for? Funny. Stupid argument, but funny.

Even funnier is the attendance at all the past "spring games" before Tedford went away from that concept. The games were FREE and only a couple hundred fans would show up. I've been to every single one of these things during and since the Holmoe era, and the attendance is, and always was, embarrassing. Some fanbase.

I find it hypocritical that fans expect Tedford to act a certain way but don't back it up with their own support. Maybe if fans started showing up for this bastardized spring practice concept, he would feel compelled to waste a practice and put on a show for the fans?!?! But a couple hundred fans get what they pay for...

I'm at every one of these things and I agree that it's not much of an event. And I also wish the Fall Scrimmage was more of a "scrimmage" like they due at the Scarlet & Gray game, and at other campuses. But if these events increase injuries, then why put more players at risk for the embarrassing number of fans that show up?

I wonder why Stanford, who usually has drawn less people to to their games before last year, has decided to rent Keisar and use it as a marketing tool. And I wonder if they have sold more season tickets by getting people involved in the program who normally don't go.

Agree with you that the attendance will not be that of an SEC school but the issue for me is that you have to try and create that atmosphere. Cal should at least try to establish this as an "event." The Pac-12 Network might just force their hand on this issue.

How many of us would even show up?? And we are pretty true Blue..We refused to show up for REAL games this season..and even some thought it cute to punish Tedford by being the no-show dicks and go to Jonathon's soccer game instead...If CMS was ready now, it might have been a good idea.

Just saying in the future the department should put energy into making this "a game." I would attend and be willing to pay money to attend. The department is losing out here in my opinion.

ALL spring games at every school are exactly that - scripted scrimmages. Games are played to win, spring practice "games" are conducted to evaluate positional skills, offense and defense schemes, and some elements of special teams.

Whether its a controlled scrimmage or a manufactured game, the risk of injury is the same. Any time you have players going 100% the risk is present.

Exactly. Part of the game of football.

I agree. They should try and make an event out of it. Some ideas:

Make it part of Cal Day when you have a lot of people on campus for events anyway.

Give out free food

Allow people to meet players and get autographs.

Get Cal spirit groups to attend and maybe even have other sports teams show up too.

Have some other activities for families - interactive games and contests, maybe a bounce house for little ones, fun things like poster making and fan photos in Cal uniforms. They could even have more activities that would be announced at another time.

They should also have people on hand to answer questions about tickets and such.

Of course, if they did all this this year, since the stadium is being constructed, they would probably have to have this event, oh...I don't know...maybe they could have it at Edwards instead.

And, give that it is Cal day and there will be a lot of people on campus, they will probably want to warn people to get there early or take public transportation - I'd say downtown BART is a good option. I hope they'd provide a link to directions and parking options.

If only they had the foresight, they could do this on Cal day this year on April 21. Maybe open the gates at 10 am and start the thing at 11 am.

I'm sure if they did, lots of people would attend. Alas.
