Third player (3 stars) from GA following Sebastian and fellow '13 CB Shon Akins

It'd be interesting to know the thought process of these southern recruits who come here. I mean, there's probably absolutely no Cal exposure and probably a propaganda equivalent amount of SEC football that should easily indoctrinate any plausible recruit who wants to play football. I'd speculate that a lot of these guys want to get the heck out of the south. Just a guess though.

Combination of facilities, academics, weather, and the fact that they know cal is headed to the top!

Well, it's not like we're stealing them from the Floridas, Georgias and Alabamas of the world...that would be quite impressive. Akins and Cheek are 3 star dudes who [I would assume] simply want a change of pace to come out west, and maybe a good education too.

Great film and tackles exceptionally well for a HS CB. He hits hard for a CB too. His highlights don't really show him covering too much but he drops two pick-sixes so I can see why his coaches put him on defense. Definitely fast and definitely athletic. I like this commit a lot and I love the fact that we are making noise in Georgia -- a wonderful state to build a pipeline to.

Interesting to hear that his receiver was only targeted only 12 times this past year. Is that more or less than Nmandi?

Look like a physical corner and a sure tackler.

Everything was going well until 1:10 mark. lol

I'm stoked we're getting these guys, but honestly I'm a little confused how we could be drawing so many southern recruits with so little exposure there. Hopefully these guys stick.

It's hard to get excited about getting commitments from guys who had offers from Ky, UCF, UConn or WF. I hope the days of challenging SC, UCLA, UO and UDub for recruits aren't over.....

From his highlights, the kid is physical and likes to hit. Solid tackler.

Hard to tell how his coverage skills are since there aren't many highlights of him in coverage. Looks a good athlete, though.

Welcome aboard....but I'm a bit confused too. Cal does really well nationally now but only a few from SEC country end up here.....is this another diamond in the rough?...Would love to know more....eh MB?....

I prefer to think of it as us tapping underexposed pools of talent.

While I understand the feeling, I think this matches with what we heard about recruiting changing for the staff. We seem to be making earlier offers and getting on kids sooner. I don't know if theres more pressure to publicly commit, but whenever we add someone I think it helps with momentum.

I'm sure there are more than a few eyebrows raised out in Georgia about what these kids are seeing at Cal, and it might get us in with some others. I think the competition with our normal recruiting foes will continue.

Anyways, congratulations to Trey and can't wait to see what the Georgia pair can do.

Ambrose played for the Falcons in his pro days, so I'm guessing this might be part of the Georgia connection as well.

This poster speaks the truth! Welcome to Cal Trey. Welcome to the PAC 12 Georgia.

Interesting that Cal has targeted several DBs out of the south this year, with this year being considered such a strong year for DBs in the west.

That said, welcome to Cal Trey Cheek!

+1 you better believe it. I've lived there several times and this is a great strategy. We are picking up our recruiting game on multiple levels, selling outside of the teeth of big competition making inroads in other talent rich markets, using our new coaches to pitch. Loving what I see. 4 at this time of year is opening my eyes.

Isn't it a great thing that you (like the rest of us) have no clue like the rest of us about this kid and that your comments have zero credence here!? I will put my faith in the guys that do this full-time and are getting paid for it.

How often I've heard this the last several years......your "faith in the guys that do this full-time" means nothing to me until we start getting results on the football field. Just because someone does this full-time does not mean they are competent.
That said, let's hope this guy becomes an All-American!

+1 I trust our guys that we wouldn't be giving schollies out to lower rated recruits unless we truly wanted them. Ambrose is getting who he wants. We also are targeting more people in the secondary because of all the spread offenses. Rich Rod and Mike Leech are both going to be running it. Add them to the list.

No, but I think until the future prospects come ONTO the field and underperform, there's no need to doubt them just yet.

"still the South"...whatever that means. Comparing the greater Atlanta area to parts of Mississippi, Alabama etc. is like comparing Fresno to the Bay Area...

Yes, but is Atlanta more or less hick than Fresno?

Before you answer that question, Fresno is about 80% larger in population and arguably is filled with Californians and Atlanta is arguably filled with, well, Southerners.

The other "push/pull" factors besides weather, facilities, PT and education is that these kids are coming from the South and while there are pockets of progress, it's still the South. Frankly Cal should play this up. NorCal and Berkeley aren't perfect but the tolerance level is night and day.

Having lived in Atlanta for the last 13 years, I'd have to say that your paradigm of the South is way off. I find the new South far more tolerant and open to differences than anywhere in the country (and I do travel extensively) except for the PR of California.

What is true is for some prospects who are in the 3* and maybe even some 4*'s, having the ability to shine for a Cal is a better choice than playing for a lower tier SEC or an ACC team in the South. Schools like UGA, Florida, Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee get the choice of the litter. So for a 3* it is better to go with a great Pac-12 school like Cal than settling for locals like Georgia Southern, GA State, etc.

I also like to look at offers, but this case is unique. We are going way out to get him. UCLA or SC are not even looking at him. Yes, it would be nice to see an Alabama in there, but if that was the case we would likely not be getting him. Thus...:tedford

Exactly my point (thank you for confirming my post)...

If Saban, Miles, Richt, et. al. are not offering guys in their region, that is a red flag...

I thought the idea was to compete with the best.

Of course, I understand there are many who love the idea of going to the secondary bowls. These kinds of recruits will certainly satisfy that need.

ManBear: Do you have any information on this kid other than info which is out there on the web? ESPN is reporting that he was timed at 4.95 in the forty. Wonder if this is a mistake, since that would seem FAR too slow for a kid hoping to play cornerback at the Division 1 level.

that 40 time was taken at the beginning of his sophomore year...almost two years ago. his film shows a guy with better than average speed. he's also very aggressive and physical in press coverage and run defense. he can hit, he's athletic and he has good hips. He's also a three year varsity player.

he only had 12 balls thrown his way last season. he broke up 9 of those attempts. that's impressive. his highlight tape does show him dropping at least one pick six though. as someone else said...i guess that's why he's playing CB and not WR!

his offer list may not be too impressive, but he was also being recruited by Wisconsin, Clemson, Tennessee, West Virginia and Arkansas. we were just the first team to actually pull the trigger.

offering Akins may have been a reach. Cheeks isn't a reach IMO.
