Friend just got this response from Direct Tv. I find it hard to belive. Probably someone who does not knw but here is the email they sent him

Thanks for writing.
>
> I understand that you want to know if DIRECTV will be offering Pac-12 Network.
>
> We currently do not have plans to add Pac-12 Network to our lineup. While we are unable to comment on upcoming programming decisions, we are always reviewing our programming options to make sure we bring you the best possible TV experience.
>
> We value your opinions about our programming, so I have forwarded your request to DIRECTV management. While DIRECTV Management can not follow up with each customer individually, rest assured every suggestion and inquiry from our most important customers is reviewed to determine what changes should be considered.
>
> In addition, whenever we add channels to our lineup, we release a statement to the press, so keep an eye on the news to find out about the newest channels or visit our web site at directv.com/pr.
>
> Thanks again you for writing. We appreciate your business.

I'd bite, too, if I had DirecTV (I have Comcast).

The cited response basically begs DirecTV customers to sell the company on the Pac-12 Network.

If DTV doesn't carry it, my DTV subscription would be out the window and I would be looking at Time Warner or Dish, depending on who carries it.

It would be a poor business decision on the part of Direct TV to not offer the Pac 12 Network given the number of viewers from the Pac 12 member states and the geographic location of the market. I would drop Direct TV in a minute to get the Pac 12 Network as they do not offer discounts to loyal subscribers like they do for new subscribers. Any other games I wanted to see could be seen via ESPN or subscriptions. What is the average number of homes who watch Pac 12 football games during a weekend? What is the average Direct TV monthly billing for each of those homes? Could Direct TV withstand the losses incurred due to Pac 12 fans switching to a provider that carries the Pac 12 Network? Which Direct TV executive is going to claim responsibility for that decision? In the end, Direct TV will carry the Pac 12 Network.

Where can we email or write to, so that they will understand they may lose a lot of west coast (and east coast for that matter) subscribers if they pull this stunt? I only subscribe to DTV because of their regional package. The regional package would mean nothing if I can't the Pac-12 Network.

Just sent an Email to Direct TV through their "Official Website" under the "Contact Us" heading. You need to include your account number. It was fairly easy and took very little time.

That's meaningless. It's the standard form response they give customers until the moment a new channel is added to the lineup. I bugged Charter about NFL Network for multiple years and it was always the same answer... basically the same language... including a few weeks before it suddenly showed up.

That said, they do listen to customers, if enough of them talk. So emailing, writing, tweeting... it's all worthwhile.

The cost of airing sports is going way, way up, meaning providers might have to either jack up prices for regular viewers who don't watch sports (which could lead to mass defections) or soon provide their own separate sports package for sports viewers (which could drive down the profits they could generate from their basic cable packages).

Tough dilemma many of them face, although I hardly feel sorry for any of them.

It was reported a couple of months ago by Jon Wilner that the Pac12 was in negotiations with both Direct TV and Dish Network. He also stated the Pac12 would only be signing up one of them. Sounds like Direct TV doesn't want to say anything until that process is done.

Currently the Pac12 network has deals in place with Time Warner, Comcast, Cox, and Bright House (the four largest cable companies in the nation). Besides the satellite negotiations, they are trying to get deals with other cable and phone networks. I wouldn't worry just yet, most of these deals will be done 12th hour. Fact is the Pac12 network is so far out in front compared to other past start ups like the Big10 and LHN it's not even funny.

...which is where cable and satellite TV providers should go, anyhow. Or, rather, Congress should act in the interest of consumers and force it on them (yeah, right!).

We just got out first HD TV.(Given to us by a friend.) We don't have HD equipment yet because we're waiting to see if Directv is going to carry the Pac 12 network. I wrote and asked and recieved a letter very much the one that started this thread. Our other choice is Comcast. Which I don't want. I like DTV. Either way it is going to involve a two year contract. Damn.

Yeah, that original e-mail response seemed very generic and canned.

Not saying that they don't track those things or incorporate consumer opinions in their decisions.

Likely it is just too early for them to make any comment as contract negotiations are still under way.

What if DirecTV gets so many emails that they decide they can go to town and charge a king's ransom for the Pac 12 network once they win in negotiations. (Cal fan response :acclaim

What would be the reasoning to sign only one of them?
I suppose it could increase the amount the network delivers in carriage fees, but it would reduce the exposure which seemed like the whole point of the network in the first place.

Also, if it's going to be one it kind of needs to be DirecTV. Every sports bar has DirecTV because of the NFL package. If it's not on there then that really hurts the exposure.

I have followed this pretty closely and never once heard/read anything like this. If someone can produce a link, fine. But it's either b.s. conjured up on the internet or b.s. conjured up by Wilner. There is zero rationale basis for such a decision.

The problem with a la carte is that it would completely change the market for TV, so the players (especially cable and satellite) that have sunk a lot of costs into their infrastructure are not going to be happy about it.

ESPN costs $5 per sub now, but if it were a la carte, it might be $20. It's just really hard to predict - I can't find any numbers right now, but I wonder how much cable or satellite infrastructure costs per sub - in terms of technology, it essentially costs about the same to deliver 1 station as it does 200 because it's already been built and developed.

We have seen a little of the future with streaming video over the internet. Some people might think it's acceptable quality and cut the cable, while others (especially sports lovers) see how far streaming is from true HD quality. What if a true HD pipe (I'm talking internet, not video channels) were to cost $$80-100 per month with NO content? (I can't see it being any less since I pay $60 per month and it's NOT even close to fast enough for true HD) - how would consumers react to 'a la carte' pricing on top of that? pricing where they pay ESPN, Fox Sports, Netflix, etc separately?

Actually that might be very good for the consumer, and bad for the pro sports leagues/ college conference. Not as much money to bid on programming because there is no advantage to overpaying and passing that charge on to those who don't even watch.

Pac 12 schools (and all schools) should be very careful about expecting another big contract and needing that money to feed their bottom line. Though in 2023 things might not be far enough along to completely get rid of the cable model.

As for directv carrying P12 net, I would think that they would, and Dish wouldn't based on their past preferences for sports. If they believe enough people would leave for cable due to no p12 net, they will pick it up. Didn't wilner say P12 gets $0.90 per in market sub? Directv choice is $64 per month, so if 1/70 customers leave due to no p12, direct will definitely lose. It could be a much smaller number than 1/70 leaving that would cost them money if direct can raise the service that $0.90 without losing many customers.

i've called FiOS before and they don't have plans yet either. Howeve,r I think its a general business policy for TV providers to be a bit mum on these things until they know for sure.

SOEFEIL You can go to this site and request it, AT&T channel survey scroll down to channel line up survey it will bring up a request form, it will also ask you if you wish to be notified by e-mail when it is avalable. I do not take this to mean they will carry it, because usually they do not announce in advance what channels they are going to add, they just suddenly appear.
