Thanks for the post. I always liked Powe. My respect for him just went up, way up.

If you missed the "Town Game" documentary about Oakland basketball, and Leon Powe specifically, make sure to catch a re-run. Should be replaying on Comcast in the coming weeks. Very inspirational stuff...

For Leon, taking the "right path" wasn't just metaphorical; I read once about an incident where he went out w/ some friends who he knew were up to no good, realized it wasn't what he wanted to do, asked to be dropped off and thus avoided getting arrested with the rest of them later that night. I'm sure he was faced with many such decision points in his life. He deserved every ounce of success he achieved.

I'll join in the thanks for posting this. I knew little about this young man prior to this. I believe he left Cal early for the NBA, not sure if that is correct, might be confusing him with someone else. In any case, I wish him the best.

Here's the whole backstory, in a great article in the East Bay Express from 2003 when he was a senior in high school.

Truly one to root for. I'm a Celtics fan, and I'll never forget his 21 points in 15 minutes against the Lakers in Game 2 of the Finals. That was phenomenal.
