The only good thing about Meebo was the universal IM client you could access through a browser. Once that got popular they added a bunch of other services and pushed the IM client onto a different page. Good riddance to all their silliness beside the IM client; it's too bad that's going away.

The Meebo Bar appears to remain intact, though.

Boo!!! That thing is the most annoying "feature" ever IMO.

From my understanding, Google is more interested in the bar and the presence on many popular top properties on the internet than they are with the IM client. That's why their killing one and keeping the other. No doubt Google will integrate into the Meebo bar.

Their IM client was cool but I think quickly becoming outdated. In particular, I'm guessing that smartphones were replacing the communication that Meebo once provided. Plus you can't really build a real business around an IM client.

Definitely a mix of acquihire, a somewhat complementary product (meebo bar) and at the minimum, about $20 to $30m annual gross revenue from advertisers. (then they share half of the revenue with the publisher/site).
