If you're going to the Open anytime soon, you may want to print this out. These are my rules for U.S. Open viewing/attendance, based on having gone to seven Opens, including five of the last six:
1. If you're going to shop, shop early. No matter how much stuff they bring in, the merchandise tent starts running out of items by Thursday night, including clothing in popular sizes, and the most popular tschotschkeys.
2. On Saturday and Sunday, there is an inverse relationship between how close you are to the clubhouse and how much golf you see. People tend not to want to walk out to the farthest reaches, especially if their trophy wife/GF is with them, and she's wearing high heels. Ergo, holes far from the clubhouse tend to be relatively uncrowded, even on Sunday, and you can get good views. This was especially true at Olympic Club, because it's built on a hillside.
3. Never follow Tiger. If you follow him, you see a lot of the backs of your fellow spectators, and very few golf shots. If you want to see him play, get ahead of him by at least two holes, and let him come to you. Amazingly, it was possible to follow Furyk and McDowell for most of their round, because the bulk of the gallery was still watching Tiger shoot 73.
4. If you have the time, volunteering is the best way to go to the Open. In return for working 4 four-hour shifts, and paying $150, I got some nice Ralph Lauren golf clothes, and a ticket for all days of the tournament. I also had access to a flush toilet, and other perks.
