In the year 2040, will there be a statue of Tedford?

I think that Tedford should be replaced after the season if we don't win the North.

That being said, I think we should build a statue to honor his contributions to Cal football. He may not be a top-notch coach anymore, but the 2002-2006 turnaround was sure something.

By the way, what inspired me to ask this question is that I just watched this documentary I recorded on KQED earlier this week about Pat Brown and his legacy in the state of California.

It's a film by his granddaughter (the daughter of 1994 California gubernatorial candidate Kathleen Brown).

If you want to check it out, it re-airs Sunday at 1:30 pm on KQED.

And it'll be shown on Los Angeles' KOCE next Saturday (July 7) at 4 pm.

Here's the trailer:

And the first few minutes of the film:

Plaque sounds about right. A small one.

This is a topic that Drunk would have truly enjoyed.

Even if he doesn't leave on a particularly high note, something in Strawberry Canyon should bare his name. He's earned that. Given what is going on with Penn State and JoePa, I would be weary of erecting a statue of anyone living.

After a few more emails are uncovered they can probably pick up that Jo Pa statue for less than a $100 and then just weld a new head on it.

Weren't they going to plant three oak trees for every one cut down for the SAHPC? (And who is following up on that?)

When (if?) those trees grow, it should be named the Coach Jeff Tedford Victory Over the Treesitters Grove.

That will suffice.

Only if there is a sign that reads: Will cut down if necessary.

A short-term "turnaround" which is now history hardly deserves a statue. How about a plaque?

I disagree. Based on the depths of our administrative incompetence, poor on the field record, low attendance, and terrible facilities, I have to say that the Tedford renaissance was no small feat.

He has won more games than any other Cal coach.
2 Pac 12 titles (one shared) -- I know, I know, but still.
9 winning seasons in 10 years
New facilities

I think this deserves a statue outside of the newly renovated memorial stadium, since it may never have been renovated if it weren't for Tedford. It's not enough to save his job. Only winning can do that. But it is enough to receive such recognition.

A bust sounds about right. He is our winningest coach ever in terms of volume.

At one point I thought we'd have the Jeff Tedford High Performance Center complete with a large statue of Tedford as you file into the stadium. Things have fallen off though.

What a difference a few years makes: I recall someone on this board criticizing my statement that Pappy Waldorf was a more successful coach (still in the top 3 at Cal, unlike Tedford; bottom line: 3 Rose Bowls vs. none).

Nevertheless, Cal has recruited well the last few years and JT may be on the verge of a renaissance. I wouldn't count him out yet. Perhaps, the best is still to come.

He should get recognized for endurance/longevity but I think a statue is a bit much. Do we really want to be forced to be reminded of him? But he's really stuck it out through some contentious times. Also, I think we'll know the answer to this much better at the end of his contract/tenure. There is still a great deal to be decided on this issue.

I think a full statue is the way to go.......

Not a chance, not unless he wins a National Championship.

Based on what's happened so far, no. He needs to take us to the next level---Rose Bowl, a couple BCS bowls.....so we had a nice run after the dismal Holmoe years.....
you've got to come up with more than that. Plaque, o.k., statue, no. If he turns
this thing around and we become relevant nationally again with some great on the field
results, then I'll contribute to a statue.

Frankly I'm a bit disappointed in the lack of historical perspective that a Cal education should provide and some of you are missing.

[LIST=1]
  • Pappy took the team to 3 Rose Bowls. Every other coach took us to 5 Rose Bowls;
  • Pappy "faded" at the end when the University stopped supporting athletics and would not allow any special admissions (they wouldn't even admit his own daughter) meaning many of best players went elsewhere;
  • Pappy wasn't "booted" but chose to retire at the age of 54 in 1956;
  • He didn't "cheat" and was never accused of doing so, though Cal booster clubs (like their counterparts at other universities (Southern Branch, SC, Washington) offered money to certain athletes (Ronnie Knox, in this case), not a clear violation of existing rules back in those days;
  • Everyone agreed that Pappy was unaware of the actions of the booster clubs (unlike the case at the other universities) and, as a result, Cal didn't get sanctioned to the degree of the others (which was a major factor in Cal beating the other teams to claim the Rose Bowl in 1959);
  • Unfortunately, Cal chose to have higher expectations and publicly reprimanded Pappy (for not getting "university approval" to set up the booster clubs) while foolishly (if not stupidly) expecting Southern Branch to do the same with Red Saunders in the naive hope of setting a trend and sending a message; and finally
  • He's in the College Football Hall of Fame.

    For more on Pappy and the "scandal" that helped get Cal to the Rose Bowl in 1959, check out the following excellent articles:

    Winning cures all.

    That said, in 20 years when the likes of ARodg is long retired, he'll get together with some of the lads and do something. It'll be dependent on what comes next but I see it happening, those guys dropping a donation to make it happen. Might not be a big deal but Tedford has won at Cal and no way CMS gets renovated or SAHPC happens without him. That's a fact.

    You NegaBears can crap your own pants being downers but you should rethink things beyond this moment in time. Pappy Waldorf got a statue and he faded big time at the end and got booted for cheating (?), right?

    Only greatness deserves statue.
    To be truly great is to win a National Championship.
    Building a statue for Tedford is like electing Nate Longshore to football hall of fame because he was once alright.

    I am still waiting for a statue of the greatest coach to ever grace the University of California (if not ALL of college football) with his presence: Andrew Latham Smith.

    "Historical perspective"??? Practice what you preach......I don't see any statue of Andy Smith and, quite frankly, Tedford doesn't hold a candle to this guy.....not even close.

    Man after 2004 and the 2005 DJ led recruiting class - I thought Cal was headed for elite status for years to come - seems like such a long time ago ...

    8 of the last 10 Elite 11 QB classes (including this year) have had/will have a Cal QB.

    So at least we've been stacked at that position.

    The year 2040? Yes, I think it would take roughly 28 years to raise the money for a statue at the rate we get around doing things for the Football Program. We better get started then.

    But maybe we're better off just gold-plating his famous playcard and displaying it in the Football Trophy Case instead.

    If not that, maybe give it to the Anthropology Department so they can display it as an example of modern-day Hieroglyphics.

    We need statues of Tedford and Monty on campus. Garden gnomes bring good luck.
