7. California The Golden Bears rank of No. 7 in the Pac-12 receiver units is really due to one player Keenan Allen. Take away Allen and California owns one of the worst receiving corps in the conference. However, the good news for the Golden Bears is Allen is back for at least one more season. The junior ranked second in the Pac-12 with 98 receptions last year, while recording 1,343 yards and six scores. Allen will once again be the go-to target for quarterback Zach Maynard, but he needs help. Freshmen Maurice Harris, Darius Powe, Kenny Lawler and Bryce Treggs could inject some much-needed athleticism and ability into this group. Spencer Hagan will start at tight end, but Richard Rodgers will push him for time in the fall.

Unfair imo to describe Cal as having one of the worse WR units without Allen. I would describe is more as having one of the most unproven.

Pretty sure Richard Rodgers is the starting 'Y' (traditional Tight End) and Spencer Hagan is our starting 'H' back, we will probably see both of them on the field 80 percent of the time in this years offense

I think that our WR corps will suprise this season. Most teams will load up to stop KA21 which should open up some room for the other guys. The best part about it is that I see Keenan still being able to beat some double teams, which may force teams to really have to overload to make someone else beat them. Our young guys are going to be open - just need to run strong routes and catch the ball

We're not really that far behind the Beavs, Ducks or Utes. We may be 7th but I think a lot of coaches would take our guys over the three immediately ahead of us.

I can see how they rate us so low -we had Allen, Jones and Calvin as WR's last year with any types of stats. Jones and Calvin are gone - so Allan is it for WR with experience.

It's one of my qualms with Tedford that he does not get more playing time/developement to players other than his starters - at least on offense and especially at the skill positions - QB, WR, RB.

I am optimistic on some of these new WR's - expecting a big year from Treggs.

We focus so heavily on ourselves that we elevate our shortcomings. We ignore all the other teams in the conference. Every single team loses players every season. Many are All American and are seemingly irreplaceable. Yet, every season they're replaced. Same will be true at Cal. So sit back and enjoy the ride. It's an annual event.

often do not distinguish between experience and quality. OTOH, Phil Steele over emphasizes the talent rankings for recruits, often placing them near or at the top of his depth chart as true freshmen, despite the fact that the schools themselves do not have them listed on their depth charts. And he claims to be the most accurate in the business. Accurately ranking the strength of a teams position units is one of the most difficult things to prognosticate accurately, especially when there are under-the-radar walk-on types and/or young talents about to emerge. Everyone's toes get stepped on in the process because it is as far from science as it gets.

They would be more accurate if they divided the rankings into 4 subcategories.
1 for starters
2. for back-ups
3. for over-all depth
4. for emerging talent
But who wants to spend the time doing that?

which describes pretty much every pre-season article. Unproven players have to count as a negative...you can argue a tick or two higher in the rankings because of Allen, but pretty difficult to be defensive about this...

Damn, SC's WR group is just flat out nasty. Wasn't there some last minute rumbling about Marquise Lee possibly signing with us? I don't know how true that is, but he is flat out amazing.

Our freshmen WRs will get plenty of chances/playing time for sure. I hope all the kids arrived on campus in top shape a couple of weeks ago and are working hard learning the playbook and developing chemistry with Maynard/Bridgford.

If "worst" means green and untested, then he may have a point. Very poor choice of words though since it implies a lack of talent which certainly isn't the case. In reality, it remains to be seen exactly was Cal has once play starts. It's always going to be tough with a lot of graduations at one position. Someone will need to step up since Allen is likely to get a lot of attention by the db's with a lot of double coverage.

Regarding Marquis Lee, we were in his final 3. I think Oregon was the other team. The same was true with Colt Lyerla, a five star athlete who now plays TE for Oregon. The problem is that we are often last on that final 3 list when it comes to high 4 and 5 start recruits.

From what I have heard, Treggs has been preparing hard for months. I suspect that Powe would be also, as he is the most common name mentioned besides Treggs. Personally I think Treggs could be the biggest key difference between a mediocre and above average Cal team next year, if he comes in ready to play.

Would love to see the TEs/Hbacks used more, maybe to the point where one of them ends up being the #2 receiver in catches during some games. I think they would be a great help for the QBs.
