Louis P. Bucklin Louis Pierre "Pete" Bucklin, a resident of Lafayette since 1974, died June 16, 2012 of complications from cancer. Born in New York, New York on September 20, 1928, he was the son of Elizabeth Josephine Barricklow and Louis Lapham Bucklin and grew up in Mamaroneck, New York. He received an AB in business from Dartmouth College in 1950. There, he was a member of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, wrote for the newspaper, and played guard on the varsity football team. Following Dartmouth, Pete attended the Harvard Business School. His studies were interrupted by the Korean War, where he served as an officer in the Marine Corps. He returned to Harvard and completed his MBA degree in 1954. He taught at the University of Colorado for two years, then earned a PhD in Marketing from Northwestern University in 1960. During his final year of the PhD program, he was a Sloan Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1960, Pete joined the faculty of the business school at the University of California, Berkeley, now known as the Haas School of Business. An expert in distribution channels, retailing and, strategic alliances, Pete, now Professor Bucklin, authored several books and dozens of scholarly articles. He won the prestigious American Marketing Association's Paul D. Converse Award in 1986 for outstanding contributions to marketing scholarship and the Alpha Kappa Psi Award in 1993 for the best management article in the Journal of Marketing. He served as chair of the Marketing Group at Haas from 1970 to 1974, director of the PhD program from 1974 to 1981 and associate dean from 1981 to 1983. He was appointed to visiting professorships at the Stockholm School of Economics in 1983, INSEAD in Fontainbleau, France in 1984, and at Erasmus University in Rotterdam in 1994. The MBA students at Haas honored him with the Cheit Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1998. He was awarded an honorary degree from the Stockholm School of Economics in 2001. Though he officially retired in 1993, he continued to teach until 2001 and edited the Journal of Retailing from 1996 to 2001. While teaching at the University of Colorado, he met Weylene Edwards of Milledgeville, Georgia. Sharing a love for travel, literature, art and academia, they married in 1956 and remained happily so for more than 50 years until Weylene's passing in 2007. They initially lived in Evanston, IL, moved to Berkeley in 1960, started a family, then settled in Lafayette in 1974. In Lafayette, both Pete and Weylene became active in civic affairs. He served as a member of the Lafayette Planning Commission from 1991 to 1993 and recently served on the board of trustees of Planned Parenthood Shasta Pacific. Pete is survived by his son, Randolph Bucklin of Manhattan Beach, CA; his daughter, Rhonda Bucklin of Menlo Park, CA; grandchildren Laura, Marie and Peter Bucklin of Manhattan Beach, CA and Kyle and Ella Hartmanis of Menlo Park, CA; sister Marietta Huggard of Sarasota, Florida; and brother Michael Bucklin of Virginia. A memorial service in honor of Pete will be held at 2:30 pm on Monday, July 9 in the Community Hall at the Lafayette Public Library, 3491 Mt. Diablo Blvd, Lafayette, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrance for Pete go to the Lafayette Library and Learning Center Foundation or to Planned Parenthood Shasta Pacific.
