Dammit. I really like Dominic's energy, and was looking forward to seeing what he could do at guard.

Get well soon, Mr. Galas.

For practical purposes this ends his year. Is he elgible for another redshirt year?

I always forget all the rules under this but I would think he'd be eligible unless he plays more than 30% of games or ANY games after the midpoint.

Maybe. To play in 2013, he would need to apply for a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA. Whether he gets one or not is uncertain, and would depend largely on whether he can document reasons beyond his control that caused him to redshirt his first year.

Sh*tty

Work like hell 9 months, and then when you can actually put it to work, you're injured...from preparation for the actual event.

Well put. As much as we might be disappointed, I can imagine how he feels.

You have to feel for the young man. Putting in the work and not getting to play. I hope they grant him a 6TH year.

Anyone know who steps into the position?

Well at least we'll have 2 less holding penalties a game.

Bad news for Galas
but maybe this situation will make a young stud step up

Certainly a tough break - as he had already recovered from the injury that kept him out of spring practice. Getting a 6th year from the NCAA is getting harder and harder to do - and it won't be known until after the season I suspect. The better news is that since he wasn't able to go in the spring, they were able to look at several guard options - essentially nothing has changed from the spring game, and more kids have familiarity at that spot (Matt Williams for one).

Did the article I read online today say he'd be out 3 months? Means he could return for the Ducks and Beavs...and our bowl game. Shame he won't see the field vs Nevada as his bro is on that team.

I think 3 months is optimistic. Then he has to regain the strength. He is a tough kid, but that will be a challenge to get back to PAC-12 playing shape after 3 months.

This sucks, but the line will be better than last year overall whether or not Galas plays, I think.

Impressive that you can see the replacement's future, witty guy.

Now, you just have to work on your common decency.

I did not know that, and it would probably add to his disappointment. This news has bummed me out.

Man this sucks for Galas, I was tutoring him last semester and he put in a lot of work. I hope this doesn't hurt his NFL chances.

Full tear right off the bone...it will take a good 3 months plus another month just to regain his strength. I have a feeling he won't see a game this year

So you're saying Galas could still make it back in time to play in the Pac12 title game?

Seriously: if a 6th year of eligibility is unlikely, and if he has legit NFL aspirations, then trying to get back in time for a bowl game appearance might still be worth the investment.

You know a lot about the O-Line, any guesses who starts against Nevada and who starts around week 4?

I know next to nothing about the nuances of OL play. Having said that, the post-Spring depth chart lists Crosthwaite and Geoff Gibson as backup OG's. I suppose another option would be to promote Chris Adcock to starting center, and move Schwenke back to OG. Coach M as 5 1/2 weeks to find the optimal combination, and get them playing cohesively.

I think he was ultimately going to start with the younger Rigsbee at guard, regardless of Dom's health. This is going to hurt depth.

shift msg back to guard, maybe williams or Farley can play rt

Tough deal for a very good guy.

Dom has been one of the Athlete counselors for incoming frosh -- working their orientation and then helping out with the players who attend summer bridge. The counselors all have to give speeches during the orientation on a topic of their choice on what they think the frosh need to hear. As an old debate coach, I help the counselors with those speeches, and two years ago the head advisor and I were real worried about Dom -- he just couldn't seem to get it together for his speech -- he stumbled his words, forgot his structure, and was listless. So we actually put him first to get his speech out of the way quickly, and then he got up on the stage and the passive Dom disappeared and Jay Leno appeared instead. He's one of those guys that can't do it in practice, but just shines once he's on the stage. Dom's speech was a riot. He ended up doing 15 minutes of stand-up comedy as he told tales of his life as a frosh. We were amazed as we died laughing in the audience. His description of his parking hassles with his scooter when he lived at the Kerr and how he had to draw a poster about the dangers of illegal parking as punishment had the whole auditorium roaring.

Cal's compliance staff has had good success with getting 6th years for other players -- let's hope they pull it off for Dom -- he deserves it.

47 years now. How about you?

There's a huge difference between saying that a younger guy might beat him out (which is your opinion, and that is OK with me) and mocking a guy who just suffered an injury that will likely end his season (which was the post I initially responded to).

It'd be very tough for him to make it back to the starting lineup by then. But, by the time of the National Championship Game is a real possibility.

I think they start with what they finished at the end of spring - With Schwenke at center. Tedford did say that Adcock was going to move to guard in place of Galas. The fact taht Galas was penciled in as the starter ahead of Gibson could mean that they didn't have the confidence in Gibson out of the spring that would indicate him starting. Adcock is a center, and a pretty good one (he played the spirng with a broken hand - which didn't help). I think GoBears58 idea about moving MSG back to guard has vlaidity. He is a natural guard and if he plays for pay, that is where he will line up. The key would be whether Farley as the #2 coming out of spring, or perhaps Williams can slot into the RT position. Tyndall could flip from the #2 LT as well I guess. Williams ran as the #2 RG in the spring and is certainly a big body to fill that slot too. 4 games in - I would say that if the 5 that start the season work out, they will stay that way. I just hope that Schwenke can stay at center - he is such a great fit there, for him and for the team. If not, then Adcock at center and Schwenke to guard.
