Most everyone believes he failed another drug test. He was suspended last year for one game because of drugs. He can go to an FCS school and play immediately or wait a year and go to another FBS school. I'm betting since he is a junior that he'll go to an FCS school, play out the year and then declare for the draft next year. Many pro teams will take a chance on him.

Edit....I may have the rules mixed up so maybe he has to go to an even lower division school.. Not sure now but Feldman posted this:

Miles also kicked his starting QB, Ryan Perriloux, off the team a few years back, also right before the season. And he plays a tough OOC schedule every year. I am thinking the early Les Miles narrative is off. Too bad, it was more fun when he was hateable.

LSU enters this season ranked No. 1 in the coaches' poll. The AP college football poll will be released Aug. 18. The Tigers opened preseason camp last week as one of the favorites to reach the national championship game again.

Mathieu was the team's big-play machine at cornerback and on special teams. The All-American scored four touchdowns -- two on punt returns and two on fumble returns -- intercepted two passes and caused six fumbles and recovered four.

He was also suspended for a game last year for failing a drug test. The Tigers beat Auburn 45-10 without Mathieu.

Mathieu has two years of eligibility left and could transfer, but he would have to sit out this season if he went to another school in major college football. If he moved down a level, to FCS, he could play right away.

"I can't imagine he would be here and not want to transfer and go play football," Miles said. "We will help him in every way we can."

LSU isn't quite as deep at cornerback as it was last season, when it had All-American Morris Claiborne and often used Mathieu as a nickleback. Tharold Simon is the other starter opposite Mathieu. Second on the depth chart are redshirt freshman Jalen Collins and freshman Jalen Mills.

Despite the off the field issues, he will still get drafted by an NFL team looking for a DB. It's sad but true as he is a great talent with a lot of baggage to go with that talent, but the NFL is a league that will forgive a lot of off the field issues if you can lock down a #1 WR or get INTs. In college football, he was a game changer.

I used to think this was always 100% true until Burfict last year. I know he posted awful numbers at the combine and couldn't interview well, but he went from a potential first rounder, to a third rounder to a no rounder. I think a lot of that had to do with him beliving his own hype and the idea that he didn't need to prove anything else.

TM7 doesn't have that long list of mistakes that Burfict did, but I can see his career following that path if he doesn't take it seriously. I suspect he transfers to another school and declares for the draft though. He's one year away from millions of dollars. Reading his story, I hope he makes it. Burfict was sporting a tracy morganesque belly at the combine, but you do wonder what a player does of they are out for a year and not training as a member of a college team. Didn't work out so well for Clarett. But even he got drafted, but then made the mistake of turning down guaranteed money for an incentive based contract.

Burfict had a horrible junior year on and off the field and ran a 5.0 40.

This kid was national defensive player of the year as a sophomore. He's first round material right now. It's an interesting decision-do you play now at a lower level which isn't really going to help your stock but may demonstrate you have cleaned up your act and show a new ethic? Or do you spend a year out which also isn't going to help your stock now but might if you return with a power program and return to form. I think not playing and entering the draft may be the worse option.

I didn't think that burfict (unless both smoke weed and that's why burfict got fat?) was the best comparison which is why I brought up clarett.

With the new NFL slotting system of rookie salaries (not entirely sure how it works for non first rounders other than contracts are 4 years), it may very well make sense to play 2013-14 for a big time program. But only if he has the discipline to wait two years.

Yah, he could easily sign with an agent with good intentions who will give him a decent amount of money between now and the combine and pay for his workouts to keep him on track in return for a cut of the NFL contract. Or he could audition agents who all throw him fat parties full of floozies, goose, and maybe something more, let himself slide, and f*(k it all up.

Well that didn't take long........FCS school so he can play right away, and most likely declare for 2013 draft I'm sure

Right, slam LSU for doing the right thing, because we know they never do the right thing but we can assume they did the wrong thing in doing the right thing. The guy had been suspended last year as well coming in as the replacement to Patrick Patterson. They also suspended their starting QB. Haters gon hate. And I guess in this case hatters gon hat.
