The Bears began to address their kicking woes with the commitment of former Penn State kicker Chase Meyer‍ through the transfer portal.

The redshirt junior kicker has a career field goal mark of 85% and an extra point percentage of 96.8%

The 5-10/185 Meyer was a 4 year varsity kicker in high school for Mater Dei High School and earned all-state honors before signing with Penn, where he began his collegiate career before transfering to Tulsa, followed by Penn State.

Meyer made his visit to Cal last week and saw all he needed to see to secure his commitment.

"My visit was on Wednesday," Meyer said. "It was awesome to stay closer to home. The staff was was great. It's guys that have approached me before. And just having my family close to home, and basically just having the opportunity to go out there, I think that was really important. And Coach Frisina (, especially, he's awesome.  He's a special teams guru, and I think that's really going to take me to the next level. I was on the preseason Watch List last year, and I think that Cal just help me reach my goals and by taking things to the next level.

"I think Coach Frisina (special teams assistant Michael Frisina) is kind of taking over the specialist room and all that kind of stuff as he was a specialist himself. He kicked at Boise State (including hitting the game-winning field goal against Washington in the 2012 Las Vegas Bowl and went 18-for-24 in his two seasons in Boise, also working with specialists at UNLV, UC Davis and OSU).”

The new Bears kicker has a career long field goal of 47 yards but describes his comfortable range as 57 yards and in, though he noted he hit some longer than that in the spring.

Meyer will be graduating this spring with a degree in Economics from Penn State and will work towards his masters at Cal.

"I'm excited, excited to get out there, and excited to be with teammates as well,” Meyer said. Cam Sydney played with in high school, so that's exciting to get to play with him again, and some of these other guys I played against in high school as well. So it's kind of a great homecoming for me and a great opportunity to kick and hopefully do some big things at Cal."
